Error When Joining Reporting Server to Farm: "Task configdb has failed with an unknown exception" an

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 11, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

This is apparently a very common error message, as I see numerous posts about it on these forums.  Unfortunately, none of the solutions have worked for me.  So I'm hoping somebody knows what is happening in my case.

CURRENT FARM (all in same domain):

Server Web3, Windows Server 2003 R2 (x86) <- WFE, WSS 3.0, SP2
Server Web4, Windows Server 2003 R2 (x86) <- WFE, WSS 3.0, SP2 (also Central Admin host)
Server SQL2, Windows Server 2003 R2 (x64) <- Database server for WSS installation (SQL 2008)
Server SQL5, Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) <- New reporting server (SQL 2008), WSS 3.0 SP2 - unjoined from farm

- Reporting server database is configured in Sharepoint integrated mode.
- All WSS servers are at SP2.  I have double, triple, and quadruple checked this.  Build on all three servers is 12.0.6425.1000 (as retrieved from Add/Remove Programs and Programs and Features, respectively.)
- No additional hotfixes were applied after SP2.

When trying to join my new server (SQL5) to the existing farm using the configuration wizard, I get the following error...

10/11/2010 19:21:16  8  ERR                      Task configdb has failed with an unknown exception

RDL Rendering (500 Internal Server) Error at Sharepoint Integrated Reporting Service

I have a serious problem that cannot be solved by googling around the keywords below:
sharepoint, moss 2007, reporting service, ssrs 2008, rendering, internal server error, ....

The error is;

"An error occurred during client rendering. The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error. "

Everything is O.K.;

* When I render the report from the REPORTSERVER (http://localhost/ReportServer)
* When the reports are scheduled to be sent by the reporting service (planned via MOSS 2007)

But if I open (render) the RDL file from the sharepoint REPORTS LIBRARY interface, all of the reports fail with that internal error message above.

It is weird also that parametrized reports are displayed without errors although the parameters are queried from a sql dataset. But I got the error when rendering the report after I've chosen a parameter  and order "apply/report"...

Possible causes how I met that error may be;

After I have installed (then uninstalled) AJAX extensions
After I have re-configured IIS Web Service Extensions list items

Possible solution alternatives I've found;

I've found a solution on MSDN replying a similar issue with an ideal cause of the error but an evreka answer but no sol

The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' error on 2nd SharePoint server in farm

We just added a 2nd SP2007 server to mirror our site.  The original site is in China, the new site in the US.  They are connected via a permanent  site to site VPN.  We are hitting the errors when attempting to upload files to the US mirror.    Environment: US server site: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (64 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (64 bit) China site: OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (32 bit) Background: We setup two test Sharepoint farm to be syncronized with only its content database. The upload works good on SZ site. But we got the following 2 error messages randomly when uploading file to document library of SF side. Error message: 1. The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' is invalid.  It may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current Web. 2. Cannot open file "ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg". -- We've tried the official hotfix, altering the schema, changing the IIS memory limit settings, and restarting the application pool. Could the issue be related to the different OSes 2008 vs 2003, or 32 vs 64bit?

SQL Server Express 2008 Reporting Services - rsAccessDenied error

I've read through a lot of posts regarding the problem, but none of the proposed solutions have worked for me. I continue to get an error stating, "The permissions granted to user '<servername>\Rich' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)." If I am logged in as the local administrator account, entering the Reporting Services URL in IE doesn't give me that error, but it takes me to a blank page. I haven't been able to get to a SSRS home page at all.

Order of operations:

  1. I installed and patched Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
  2. I installed SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services using the MS web installer.
  3. I downloaded and installed SP1 for SQL Server Express 2008.
  4. Opened up an instance of IE and tried to go to http://<servername>/Reports, receiving the above error. Well, technically I first tried /ReportServer_SQLExpress as reflected in the SSRS configuration manager, but that didn't work, either. I then changed the Web Service URL to use the virtual directory, "Reports" instead of the longer ReportServer_SQLExpress. It didn't work either way.

I've tried running IE as administrator, adding local machine to trusted sites, and just about every other suggestion I've found. I even ran the entire installation logged in as the loc

Error Upgrading from SQL Server 2000 - > 2008 R2 Reporting Services

Hello, I am having some trouble upgrading an existing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services installation from an old server to a new one commissioned for this purpose, which is running SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services.  I have been following the instructions here:

but after trying to connect with reporting services 2008, i get this error:

The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'C.0.6.54'. The expected version is '147'. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)

before starting the process, I ran upgrade advisor and got back the following results:

Setup can upgrade a SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services instance that uses a SQL Server 2000 Database Engine in the same instance. However, upgrade is blocked if the report server database is in a different instance, on a remote instance, or runs on a remote SQL Server 2005 instance in SQL Server 2000 compatibility mode.

*note, our reporting services IS in the same instance as the SQL Server 2000 database engine.  However, upgrade advisor still reported that this instance can not be au

Sharepoint 2010 - Error while running Configuration wizard for SP 2010 server farm

Hi All,

I am trying to set up a SP 2010 farm. I have windows server 2008 R2 installed and was able to install SP 2010 successfully. However when I ran the Sp 2010 Products and configuration wizard I am getting the following error at Step 3.

 Failed to create the configuration database.
An exception of type System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException was thrown.  Additional exception information: The given key was not present in the dictionary.
System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException: The given key was not present in the dictionary.
   at System.ThrowHelper.ThrowKeyNotFoundException()
   at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.get_Item(TKey key)

I have installed all the prerequisites and I am on Microsoft Geneva Framework 1.0.30624.0 . I saw on a blog that Microsoft Geneve Framework beta 2 will actually cause the above problem. However I encountered the error with Beta 1 version as well.

Any ideas why this is happening?
