Can't install SP1 on SQL 2008 express default instance

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 11, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I have SQL Express instaled as the machine default instance name MSSQLSERVER.  When I run Express SP1 setup and choose that instance, it won't let me select any features to install.  Presumably this is because it thinks my instance is not express because of the instance name.  Is there a workaround for this behavior?

TIA,
Josh

Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5 4.0.0.0, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

When trying to install SQL 2008 Reporting 'Install the native mode default configuration' is greye

Whilst troubleshooting an earlier issue with SQL 2008 R1 I needed to install SQL without reporting, I then went through the SQL add feature to add Reporting once SQL was working.  The issue I am getting is that the option I need for SCOM R2 'Install the native mode default configuration' is greyed out and the only choice I have is 'Install, but do not configure the report server' which apparently happens when you don't install reporting at the same time as installing the SQL database engine.  In order for SCOM reporting to install I need manually configure SQL reporting to how it is configured when you install in native mode.  Can anyone help with a document on how to configure this manually ? thanks

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

Can not connect to user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio 2

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. The error.log at 'C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS\error.log' has the following relevant entries: 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      Error: 17156, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      initeventlog: Could not initiate the EventLog Service for the key '3677F6D3-17C7-4F', last error code is 2. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server &

SQL Server 2008 Express impossible to install.

As part of ARCserve backup r15, SQL Server 2008 Express is to be installed on a windows 2003 sp2 server (french language). All the prerequistes are present (power shell, .NET 3.5, Windows Installer 4.5...). The install fails with an -2147024893 error. I have not found anything conclusive about this error on the net. To get down on the issue I tried to install sql 2008 Express SP1 manually first. It fails with no error, returning to the main installation screen after installing the support files. The SQLSetup.log shows no apparent error but stop abruptly with the following : "Attempting to launch process d:\23ab1738a0f035434457b033\x86\setup100.exe"... as if this attempt was "suspended in the air". I have already tried to uninstall/install .NET 3.5 SP1, PowerShell, Windows Installer 4.5. No previous version of SQL had never been existed on this server. I even run "caspol.exe /machine -reset". I have tried the installation with SQL 2008 Express in english... I made registry cleanups... It's been one week of investigation and for the first time in my career I'm "dry". Is my case desperate ? Thanks   ******************* I enclosed the summary.txt when it's ARCServe r15 which is installing. I notice that "requested action" is "RemoveNode". I suppose it's related to any cluster. But we have not any cluster on the

Changing a current SQL 2008 Express Sharepoint instance to incl. Reporting services

I have a current instance of SQL 2008 Express that was created with a Sharepoint installation. Currently, that is the only purpose of the instance. We don't have management studio installed but from what we can tell by searching help screens is that instance is on SP 1 (10.1.2531.0) with Database Engine Services and SQL Server Replication. We need to now add Reporting Services. If we go to the Installation Tools to Add/Change the current instance, it asks for the SQL media which was from the original Sharepoint install. I have downloaded SQL 2008 Express with Advanced Tools but not SP 1. I've seen some threads where this wasn't a direct install. Ideally, I'd like to be able to change the current instance to add Reporting Services. When the wizard prompts for the media, will I be able to now point to the downloaed SQL Express w/ Adv. Tools even if it's not SP1? Thanks for your help. Tracy

Can't install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition x64 from Command Line

I can't get R2 Express (x64) installed from the command line... x86 using this same command line works fine, just x64 is broken.

Using this:

/q /ACTION=Install /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD="MyStrongPassword" /INSTANCENAME="SQLEXPRESS" /FEATURES=SQLEngine,Replication,SDK /SQLSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="MyComputerName\MyUserName" /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms=TRUE

Everytime it fails with:

2010-09-19 15:30:48 SQLEngine: : Checking Engine checkpoint 'ConfigureServiceBroker'
2010-09-19 15:30:48 Slp: --SafeSqlCommand: ALTER DATABASE tempdb SET NEW_BROKER ALTER DATABASE msdb SET NEW_BROKER

Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). The Windows account doman\user does not exist and cannot be provisioned as a SQL system administrator
Error result: -2068578304
Result facility code: 1204

domain/user is a domain administrator and also a local administrator and is the currently logged in user.  This failure is happening as part of A Citrix XenApp 6.0 configuration which was started as an Administrator

A Google search for
"The Windows account" "does not exist and cannot be provisioned as a SQL system administrator"
Came up with absolutely nothing.

A Google search for -2068578304 failed to find anything, which did not surprise me.

-2068578304 translates into hex as 84B40000.

A Google search for 84B40000

Comes up with a fair few different textual descriptions with the same error code, which I am wading through.

Any help would be welcome.  I am also asking my friends at Citrix.

With thanks in advance.

SQL Express 2008 R2 failed to install: Exit error code: 17115

I'm trying to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2, but I keep getting errors.  I've probably tried 10 to 15 times over the last weeks, always trying something different.  Yes, I'm learning to read the logs, the summary.txt provided below.  The last two times I've noticed that the exit code, exit facility code, and error code are the same in this log.  I tried following one post that had these codes and had long/detailed procedure on how to remove SQL manually, especially traces from the registry.  It didn't solve my problem.  I get no errors on removal, everything removes successfully.  So what to do?  Thanks for your help.  --Ralph
