VS 2008 Design Mode Hangs on Windows 2008 Server

I have looked at all the posts I can find on this problem and tried everything I can think of, but still the problem persists. I am getting really sick of it. It was working fine for the last year until an update to MS Office 2007 caused a lot of problems (automatic update). After checking posts here, I removed it completely. No change. I then tried all the things I could find on other posts, also no change. Today, I removed VS and the Web Authoring Component and re-installed. Still no go. Does anyone have a fix for this problem. It seems that it has been around a long time, but is still giving problems. I even saw one suggestion to reformat the drive! You've got to be joking! Help please, I'm getting desparate.

SSMS 2008 Activity Monitor Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server (SQL Server

I get the following error when running SQL Server SSMS 2008 (32-bit) on my (Windows 7 64-bit) workstation against our SQL Server 2005 (32-bit) development server running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit): TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server <my server\instance name>. Activity Monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state. Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Unable to find SQL Server process ID 2256 on server VTX-DEV-01 (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.ResourceMonitoring)   I can expand the panes and all display data except Overview and Data File I/O. This is true for all instances on that server. The SSMS 2005 Activity Monitor (also on my workstation) works fine when connected to that server. I checked for the registry setting to disable the performance counters on both my machine and the server, and it was not there. I started the Performance Counter DLL Host on my machine, but that made no difference. I can see all Processor counters on the server from my local Performance Monitor. I ran "lodctr /R" on both systems, but that didn't help. The only SQL counters I see on the server (from my workstation) are SQLServer:SSIS Pipeline and SQLServer:SSIS

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

SQL Server 2008 Data Collection Queries

I am trying to find information on the new Data Collection functionality in SQL Server 2008. Mainly around how to properly query the tables..etc for building custom reports. Anyone find any good books, CBTs or have any queries already written? Everytime I try to search on the subject I just get a bunch of tutorials on how to configure it, which really doesn't require much of a tutorial if you use the wizard.John M. sql 2008: the activity monitor is unable to execute queries against server

Installed sql server 2008 entrprise edition on VM server windows 2008 (64bit). When launch Activity Monitor, get:

The Acityvity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server <server name>.
Activity Monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.
Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor.

Additional information:
Unable to find SQL Server process ID xxxx on server <server name>

Tried to "use he context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor" and got the same error again.

Installed sql 2008 in my XP machine, I can use Activity Monitor (AM) for local instance but cannot launch it for the instance on the server (same error).

Used windows authentication with sysadmin role for connection from my machine. On the server used domain\administrator that the account created the instance.

Please help.

Where to find code samples for Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Analysis Services Step by Step

I got this book  Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Analysis Services Step by Step by Scott Cameron, Hitachi Consulting from our tech Library , however the companion CD is missing. Can anybody share the CD / practice code examples with me please? The book is only useful if I get to practice the code alongside reading the theory!

server controls inside asp:wizard, doesnt render html when step is not first..

I have a server control which consists of a gridview with custom navigation&information capabilities and with javascript functions to highlight the selected grid items or highlight when mouse over event occurs.. (full tested outside asp:wizard)

I'm trying to use that server control inside a template wizard step, when I drop such server control in the first step of the wizard everything goes ok.

When I insert even a blank step previous to the step which contains the server control, the javasript code of the server control is not rendered at all, the page doesn't fail during load but until I go with mouse over an item of the grid for instance.

When I check the rendered HTML I can see no HTML, nor javascript events of this server control where rendered, neither the implementation nor calls to javascript, but even rarer what is there visible in the grid for ie, even the other components of the server control, are not in the "view source code" content.

I seems it was sent to the client, even showed, but truncated in some phase..

Thanks in advance for your comments,

Sql Server 2008 logs Authentication mode incorrectly avoids remote login

Im trying to connect SQL server 2008 Express R2 installed on XP sp3 pc through ODBC SQL Server driver with a Windows 7 PC. I managed to define static IP ports and setup firewall. Now the ODBC connection successfully gets created by accepting uid : sa and my password given.

Now Im getting "login failed for user ". " msg from my application. When I run the same application with same ODBC connection created in the SQL server PC it works fine. The two pcs operate in a workgroup.

Following  is the error log. Im surprised to note that the server logs its in Mixed mode initially and later makes a cry that its in Windows Authentication mode. !!!!

Using Queries in SQL Server 2008 R2

I am trying to make the conversion from Access to SQL Server And after a lot of false starts I'm finally able to connect aVisual Basic 2008 program to an SQL Server database.  Now I need to convert a number of Access quries to SQL SErver queries, and again having a problem

Using the SSMS creting the tables was simple. I created an SQL query using the SSMS and clicking on "New Query"  copied in the following Access qury  "SELECT [ID], [Title], [Authors], [Series], IIf([BookLoanStatus]='O','ON LOAN') AS Loaned
FROM tblBooks;", I gave the query a nam "qryBooksGridSelect" and saved it (I thought) I got the error "Could not find stored procedure 'qryBooksGridSelect'."

In trying to find the query in the SSMS i found it in a folder titled "Projects".

Obviously I did something wrong in setting up the Query, but I don't know what so I devided to put the query directly into the Visual basic program, I did so and changed the Command type to "CommandType.Text.. Now I get the error "Incorrect syntax near '='." and i haven't the vaguest idea what that means.

If anyone can help I would sure me grateful.

Processes running lond queries are killed by SQL Server 2008

We recently upgraded a server from 2005 to 2008. We have some long running SP's (1 or 2 min) that used to run ok on 2005. Since the upgrade, whenever we run those SP's after some time, the process ID is no longer up on the server and the SSMS on the client indicates that the query is still running. Is there a new timeout parameter or something like that on 2008 that drops the long running procedures?
