Unable to Display data of External List

hi everyone, I encounter a problem when I display the data from external list. The error message is :

"Unable to display this Web Part. To troubleshoot the problem, open this Web page in a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-compatible HTML editor such as Microsoft SharePoint Designer. If the problem persists, contact your Web server administrator.

Unable to display this Web Part. Error while displaying External list in sharepoint website

I tried to create an external content type for a website and I got an error....here are the details of the steps I followed:

1. I created an team site in sharepoint server 2010.Nothing I added extra to the site.

2. Then I opened that site in sharepoint designer and created a new external data type.

this is an SQL server. I have a small database in my server, I added that as an external data type to this site.

3. I am able to add the database to my site.

4. Then I created an External List of type contact list as my database has article ID, author, data of creation etc.

5. This creation also sucessfull and when I clicked on create button , my external list appeared on the quick launch but it didn't displayed anything on the page it showed up the below error on the page.

I  have a sharepoint list[Managers] with groupby sector column. like below




Each Sector group by column data i want to display in label or panel control.

How to do that ? how to write the logic?

Data form web part not displaying - Unable to display this Web Part. ....



I am designing a data form - adding some formatting etc.  I am able to see the webpart correctly in SPD split view, but when I trying to preview it, it gives me the following error

Unable to display this Web Part. To troubleshoot the problem, open this Web page in a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible HTML editor such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. If the problem persists, contact your Web server administrator.
ANy help would be welcome, I have spent a lot of time on this page and don't want to do it again.  THere are a lot of fields and it's a tedious process to move them to the correct location.  I am at my wits end, I am not sure how to debug this!!


Connecting a Sharepoint Custom list with an external Data-source

Hi I am planning to connect a Sharepoint Custom list with an external Data-source. External DB will be in Access 2007 format. More Information: I need a solution that we can connect our sharepoint list (one-way) to online db in a way that new  information is directly updated in the sharepoint list, whilst other info changed in sharepoint list  is not synced back to original value. Is there a way to solve this? -saumil

Best way to display data of a single column from a Sharepoint Custom List

I'm trying to create pages that will automatically populate with data pulled from a sharepoint list (like title, department, contact info, etc.).   I'm using publishing pages. What would be the easiest way to do this, and how would I specify which data to pull from the list? For example, the page would be set up like this: [Title:biology] [Department:biology] [Contact Info:biology]   and when the page loads, it would look like this: Biology Lab Biology Department 123-456-7890   I want it to just pull the data -- I don't want a list view or anything like that.  I need this page to look pretty, and I need the each column's data to show up in a very specific place. How could I make pages that would do that?

Cannot delete external data list column due "Parameter name: combinedEncoded" error

Hello!   I migrated a Sharepoint 2007 to a Sharepoint 2010 by dbattach method. And now I want to delete the BDC list columns, but I'm getting this exception: System.ArgumentException:   Parameter name: combinedEncoded    at Microsoft.SharePoint.BdcClientUtil.SplitStrings(String combinedEncoded) What should I do to delete properly this columns?   Many thanks!

BCS Data List - Unable to Allow Filtering

Hello,   I'm using the BCS Data List to display values from the 'Contoso Inventory List' on the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 demo machine.  I'm unable to allow user filtering of data - the options appear grayed out.  Here's what I did: Dropped a BCS Data List web part on my page Selected my External Content Type Data appeared as expected I then clicked the 'Edit View' link to modify the BCS Data List view The selections under 'Items to Retrieve' are grayed out - with "Retrieve All Items" selected by default.   I had hoped to use 'Retrieve items specified by the user' which in SharePoint 2007 BDC gave the user filtering options.I'm hoping someone can help me understand what I'm doing wrong.     Thanks!   Steven   ps - I get the same behavior with different SharePoint sites and External Content Types, so I don't believe it's a problem with my SharePoint site.

Excel External Table Data can only create new SharePoint List when Exporting from Excel?

I have a SQL Query that I refresh everyday in Excel. I want to be able to export this list over to a SharePoint list right after my refresh in Excel but I can only Export to a SharePoint list only once. If I try to export again to the same list then it will give me the error "The specified list name is already in use on this server. You must rename the list before publishing it to the server." I have web parts that have connections to this list and I do not want to export my Query to a new SharePoint list everyday. Does anyone know a way around this issue?

Unable to load External list in Sharepoint Foundation - error due to trial period expired

I've created an external content type and external list on Sharepoint Foundation. Everything is OK when creating and viewing these items in create mode in sharepoint designer. When trying to view the external list in the browser I get error message "Unable to display this Web Part..." When I opened the same list in the mobile view url I get a more descriptive error message: "The shim execution failed unexpectedly - The trial period for this product has expired.." how to display multiple calendar list data in single calendar view

Hi, Normally, we can used to extend the ListViewWebPart's ViewType property to display a particular calendar list items in Calendar View in our custom webpart. Is it any way to display multiple calendar list data in a single calendar view ?? or please provide some pointers related to this issue. Any help is much appreciated.    

BDC, external list with many-to-many Association, how to input data

Hi, I have built a BDC with VS2010 and Sharepoint Enterprise as target platform. It is basically a technical evaluation about many-to-many Associations in external content types. Its has 2 entities which are Person and Ticket and should reflect a data model where persons can work on multiple tickets and tickets can also involve multiple persons. For linking those 2 entities I have a link table which can be read via the "Navigators" and be modified via the "Associator/Disassociator". I made the model completely with the VS2010 bdcm designer and as far as I know its good. (Its a "foreign key less" association, the identifiers are UInt32.) Now my question is how do I actually use those manipulators, or at least show data and related data. With 1-to-n relations Sharepoint did render an interface for handling the relation for me, but with a keyless n-to-m relation I dont get any interface for connecting the entities at all. Then I tried to make this via Infopath, but as far as I can tell, you cant use a 2nd datasource there with external List. (And it seems to be supposed to be this way.)

Filter External List by a range of data

I have an external list web part that I am currently using a choice filter on to filter by a certain status.  The options are yes, no, or (empty).  However, I would like to be able to add an additional option to filter where the person has the previous status set to no, but has a value in a different field greater than 90. I realize that the choice filter probably wouldn't do this, and that I could do this easily with separate list views, where I have some sort of web part that can change the list views on the fly. I would think I could use one of those list filters to do this, but when I tried to do that for my original problem, I was unable to connect the filter to my external list. I could connect the list view filter to any internal list without an issue however.  Somebody commented on my old thread that I posted as cptInsane0 that I could just make an infopath view form that has buttons that do this.  I have dabbled with infopath a little bit, but I wasn't able to get infopath to connect to my external list either.  I first had to connect to an internal one, and then for some reason I could add the external list as an alternate data source. I can't be the first person who has had this issue. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Calendar View for External Data List in SharePoint 2010?


I'd like to create a calendar view from data contained in an External List.  My external content type has a Start Date, End Date, and other calendar fields.  Is this possible using the out of the box BCS?

For extra credit - I'd like to then use this calendar as an overlay on other calendars within my SharePoint 2010 application.

DataFormwebpart to display specific folder data of a List.



I am having one requirement where the DataFormwebpart should display specific folder data of a List. For an exxample I have one list which has three folders Level 1 , Level2 and Level3 . I want that when webpart is added on SharePoint page it should display data of Level1 and not the root level data of list. 

Basically the webpart needs to be drilled to Level1 folder by default rather than root folder of List.


Unable to view data on list views

I have two lists. A List item in one list will be inserted to the other list based on the actions. This is easily achieved on the event receiver by adding the list item to the target list. Though I adds the list item to the target list; i am only able to view those data when i click on "Modify View" and simply click on "OK" button. Basically its a view refresh / commit. Has anyone came across such issue?

Display Originating List Data into Workflow Task



I have two needs that my users have requested. I am limited to SharePoint designer due to environment restrictions. 

  1. Is it possible to display information from the original list in the workflow task that was created? This is so the users don't have to click back into the original list to see the details of what they are approving.
  2. Is it possible to put the Approve / Reject buttons directly in-line with the tasks? This is so the user can approve the item without ever leaving the list of tasks they have been assigned?
