Essential SQL Server Date, Time and DateTime Functions

The essential date and time functions that every SQL Server database should have to ensure that you can easily manipulate dates and times without the need for any formatting considerations at all.

Date/Time Conversions Using SQL Server

There are many instances when dates and times don't show up at your doorstep in the format you'd like it to be, nor does the output of a query fit the needs of the people viewing it. One option is to format the data in the application itself. Another option is to use the built-in functions SQL Server provides to format the date string for you.

SQL Server Date Formats

One of the most frequently asked questions in SQL Server forums is how to format a datetime value or column into a specific date format. Here's a summary of the different date formats that come standard in SQL Server as part of the CONVERT function. Following the standard date formats are some extended date formats that are often asked by SQL Server developers.

Instance and Default connection properties on SQL Server 2005

We had a sql server fail and I have been having troubles.  I compared the connection properties on the server properties and noticed that multiple default settings are no longer set.  So I'm wondering if during the failure these could have some gotten flipped.  DB's that worked all of a sudden don't work and we had to migrate to a different instance.  I have never changed any of the setings below and wonder what impact they would have if I changed them back to the default of an installed instance? ansi warning is checked ansi padding is checked ANSI NULLS is checked arithmetic abort is checked quoted identified is checked No Count is checked concat null yields null is checked Could anyone tell me how clearing these checked options will impact my db?   -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, Vista, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com    Twitter @pbbergs Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

What is the default isolation level (SQL Server 2008)

Hi, My database settings are: SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON Does this mean I don't have to explicitly have: Set Transaction Isolation Level Read Committed for each proc, i.e. because I have the two settings at the database level there is no need set the Transaction Isolation Level in each proc or does this need to be done as well as the database level settings. Not Null Date Default

I'm one of the people that try to avoid nulls when ever possible, usually using defaults.  This is especially important since my apps do a lot of data exchange with external entities often involving flat files.  A flat file can't distinguish between a null or an empty value so to ensure consistancy between data types in both systems I try to make sure every field has some value.  (E.g., If I have a null or empty string in a char field type a CSV flatfile shows ',,' for both.  The target system might interpret this as an empty string or a null; I have no direct control.  This could result in a null in one system and '' in another losing consistancy.  For charactor and number types this is rarely a problem if I communicate that there are no null fields in the data, but for dates it often becomes an issue. Is there a industry standard approach to managing "empty dates" so I can make date fields not null and empty? Thanks

Can the default member for the sql server analysis filter web part be a mdx expression or not

I have designed a dashboard , some parametrized reports ( on date and time) in my case with a cube as datasource, added an analysis services 2005 filter, connected it to the reports. The issue concerns the default value for the filter . I f I choose [Date Local].[Calendar Hierarchy].[All] it works well. But the business requirement is to use the last day where there have been registered a measurement which in my case looks like the following mdx expression: Tail( Filter ([Date Local].[Date Key].[Date Key].Members , ( ( [Advisor Organisation].[Advisor organisation].[Contact Center].&[Denmark]&[Kundelinjen], [Measures].[Calls Offered] , [Date Local].[DK Holiday].&[False] , [Date Local].[Week Day].&[True] ) > 0 ) ), 1).Item(0).Item(0) The expression is all right as I use it in my report as an mdx filter expression. But when I use apply it I get an invalid dafault member value. So the question is : Does the filter support an mdx expression ? If yes, is there another syntax or change in order to make it work ? Thank you a lot for your answer.

SQL 2005 Server export to Foxpro fails by "default codepage missing"

Hi, I just tried to apply the foxpro driver VFPOLEDBSetup.msi to import and export an old format dbf. First of all no other method is available in this case, as one of the dbf-tables holds about 9 million rows. I don't want to (manually) go to excel and wait for 10 years importing it there, then only to discover i need another 10 years to get it into sql server.   Here's my task at hand: Source: street/housenumber database with approx 9 million rows Task:  Convert it to SQL server database (import DTS)           Change some data Export it back to DBF format. I don't have any problems acting on the first two steps (dts import to SQL 2k5 and changing data) I doooo have some problems with the last part. As soon as i define the DTS through the wizzard, it leaves the "CodePage" blank. However, upon executing it i receive some warnings and finally errors: On the "Setting Destination Connection" action in the final execution progress window: - Setting Destination Connection (Warning) Messages Warning 0x80202066: Destination - housenum [40]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. MS SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise with default encryption

Hi, I wish to know whether or not by default MS SQL Server 2005 Std or Ent edition will encrypt the communication over the network by default? As, when we test out the database activity monitoring solution to capture the SQL traffics from the network, we are unable to see the DB user name and Source Program but SQL statements is able to seen. According to the vendor, it is due to the nature of MS SQL Server 2005 that encrypt the communication by default. But, why is it only encrypted the DB user name and Source Program but not the SQL statement? Can someone provide me the answer? Is that true what the vendor claims?   regards, Teh

Changing Clustered SQL Server 2005 Default Server Collation

We are attempting to change the default collation of an SQL Server 2005 Clustered environment. We have created an "unattended install" script to perform this, and have modified it several times as errors have arisen repeatedly. The last time, however, we used the following script:

We are running this script from the primary (Active) node of the cluster. We did notice that the bootstrap logs created from this final execution did include logs from both nodes. When I look in the Summary.txt file, it tells me that Setup succeeded with the installation. After the script executed, we rolled the cluster from primary to secondary, and rebooted the primary node. We then rolled the cluster back to the primary, and rebooted the secondary node. Once that was complete, we cycled the SQL Server service from the SQL Configuration Manager. After all those steps, we opened SSMS client to look at the properties of master, and the collation was still CI_AI.

Default values for filters not populating in report builder (SQL server 2005)

I  am frustrated with this challenge for  populating default values for filters in report builder. Here are the steps that I am performing.

I have clicked on the filter icon, then dragged the dimension to the filter pane, switched the properties to Prompt and changed the operator to 'in this list'.

by default the value selected is 'no value selected', Microsoft online tutorials says that this should automatically populate the filter criteria with the default list of values for the underlying dimension. However it dosen't

How do I populate this filter with default list of values.

Please help.
