Detect what kind of mobile/browser is accessing a webpage

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 10, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Hi.

Right now, I have designed my page that works great with an iphone screen, with the help of this meta tag:

<meta id="ctl00_viewport" name="viewport" content="width=320; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;">

Problem is, how do i detect what kind of phone that are acessing my page, and afterwards change this meta tag to fit it to that phone?

Thanks alot :)

What's the best way to check if the user is using a mobile device and so redirect them to the URL above?

How to setup a Mobile Browser Emulator in Windows Mobile 6:

In the following tutorial, I cover the process of Setting up Windows Mobile 6 for Mobile Browser Emulation using the Microsoft Device Emulator. This enables a user to experience Windows Mobile 6 on a PC via Emulation without even owning a Windows Mobile 6 product. It can be a great way to test drive Windows Mobile 6 before purchasing a product with it installed. In our case, it allowed us to Emulate Windows Mobile Browsing so that we could optimize our sites for the Mobile viewing audience. Installation and Emulation is simple and fairly straight forward.

Detect Browser Screen Size??

Hi Everyone,  I need to detect the size of the user's screen for mobile devices (especially the BlackBerry). I've read a lot of pages that seem to refer me to the Request.Browser object, but I'm finding that this object doesn't have the correct values. For example, I have a BlackBerry and when I use the Request.Browser to get the screen size, it tells me it is 640x480. Well, I know it's not that big since an image of 300px wide just barely fits. Also, when I run on my desktop browser, it also says my screen is 640x480. I can assure you, it is not 640x480! ha!

How does anyone reliably get the browser's screen size?? Do I have to revert to some kind of JavaScript? If so, where can I read more about it? Will it be any more reliable? Someone must have an idea about this. Thanks in advance!!

Create web site specific to mobile device, how to detect?

Hi

I have a website that is written in .Net 2.0 which uses all the nice rich functionality of the web (Ajax, javascript etc..).  However I have noticed that the site does not display very well on mobile devices.

So therefore I would like to create a more streamlined version of my site that is better tailored to these devices.  However how do detect that the user has come to the site via a mobile device and how can i redirect them to my tailored page

Many thanks in advance

How to detect Mobile devices like Pocket PC??

Hi all,
Need help on this. As you know there is PDA-phone like Pocket PC-phone run on Window Mobile 2003 and above. It has Ms Internet Explorer of scale down version.

So, the question is this kind of device is under mobile device category but having IE browser. So, how to detect this kind of MObile device using MobileCapabilities class?  YOu see, SmartPhone also have Ms IE browser. How to tell them apart?? If I serve Pda-html website to SmartPhone, its screen size will be too small for it.

My objective is this : to detect the PDA device and Mobile Phone .

If it is PocketPC-phone, I will serve PDA-html website or Mobile web base on customer selection.
If it is smartphone or WAP 2.0 -base mobile phone, I will serve  Mobile Web.

please help.

How to detect and prevent new browser instance

Hi Folks,

I have a problem w/ a web app which is probably fairly common, but I cannot find any solutions anywhere. Hopefully someone will have an idea.

The web app in question provides a UI for editing a client (in the business sense, not the browser sense), identified by a ClientID.  I store the ClientID in Session, which gets passed from page to page, along with a number of other pieces of data in Session.  Works great.

The problem is that if the user opens a new browser window using Ctrl N or File->New Window (in IE), the new window comes up with the same page as the current page, with the same session info. Then if the user navigates to a different client in the 2nd window, the ClientID in session refers to the new client. If they go back to the original browser window and save, the original client gets saved using the 2nd ClientID, and all hell breaks loose, because now the data from the two jobs are intertwined.

I have enabled trace and verified that the new browser window uses the same SessionID as the original.  If an entirely new instance of IE is opened, it has a different SessionID, so is not a problem.  I have not yet investigated other browsers, such as Chrome or Firefox.

Is there any way to determine if a browser instance is opened for a web app which is already open in

Mobile redirect and the browser back button

Has anyone here ever successfully constructed a two-page mobile website with VB, one page for input and one page for displaying results?  If so, how do you call the results page and can you return to the input page using the back button on your mobile browser?  I have no problem creating such a website for regular browsers, but I simply cannot construct one for the iPhone or the Droid ... you can't return to the first page via the backbutton and still have it be functional; all you have is the graphics.  There is no load event for the page you're returning to.  It seems like mobile browsers don't handle server-side redirects properly.  If you open a new page via a hyperlink, you can return to the page you were on and it will still be functional; not so following a redirect to another page on your site. I've experimented endlessly with cache settings, redirect parameters, and the pagestatepersister class to no avail.  I need to know if I'm on a futile quest.  Can anyone offer confirmation for can do/can't do?

How to make sure that user doesn't open same webpage in two different browsers or browser tabs?

Hi,

We are using asp.net StateServer for asp.net session management. In our project we need to make sure that if a user is already logged in and if he is trying to acess the website from a different browser tab, we need to inform him that he is already logged in in another tab and use it instead of opening a new session. Consider the following scenarios:

1. User is logged on in tab1 and his session is still on, then user tries to logon from another tab, the browser sends the asp.net session_id cookie, In the page init i am checking if the Asp.net session Id cookie is present, if it is there i am checking if the it is a new Session (i.e. if the existing session timed out), if it is a new session then proceed with the user action else it means that the session in tab1 is still active so i am redirecting user to error page with appropriate message.

Now the problem with this approach is that, suppose session in tab1 is expired and user opens tab2 and performs some actions, now he goes back to tab1 and perform any action, i directly need to take him to log out page.

Please let me know how this can be achieved.

Accessing a MOSS 2007 Site on Mobile devices

1) I am aware that simply adding a "/m" to the site URL gives me the mobile URL but it opens the _layouts/mobile/mbllists.aspx page instead of showing the site default.aspx page. I want the site to be accessible on mobile devices in the same way as through internet browsers. What is it that I need to do?

2) Can someone also tell me how does MOSS handle mobile requests i.e the underlying architecture?

Thanks!!

Punnu
