Source directory question

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 09, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

On my site I have several directories, each restricted by the roles of the logged-in user. I have a file that I want to put into an administrator folder but when I do so the javascript does not fire. If I move the directory to the root level the javascript fires fine. With the page in the administrators directory I have tried changing the source to "~/js/modal.js" but that does not work.

In the root directory the source is found with: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/modal.js"></script>

I even tried src="http://www.website.com/js/modal.js"

Is there something I am doing wrong or a dependancy I should look for?

clr assembly in sql server - working directory? and exception question

Hello, I have a small assembly in sql server 2008... it's pretty simple, but in the very rare circumstance that it may throw an exception I am catching it and writting to a log file. something like: using (StreamWriter sr = new StreamWriter(@".\ErrorLog.txt", true)) { sr.WriteLine("{0:G} ===> {1}", DateTime. Now, ex.Message); } I believe that should write the file to the working directory... 1. what would the working directory be for sql server 2008? the binn directory? 2. what would happen if a clr assembly added to sql server throws an exception that is not handled by your clr code?

General question: Using the VS Designer vs. the Source Code

I just finished Sams Teach Yourself ASP.Net in 24 Hours. I am now going through the Data tutorials here. I am a beginner at ASP.Net. One thing that I am having a little bit of trouble with is the idea that I am using the Designer in Visual Studio for just about everything except for a few code tweaks. I used to do a lot of HTML, JavaScript and CSS. I even did some programming (PowerBuilder). So, I am used to writing/typing code instead of using a Designer. (I always liked writing web pages in a text editor.) When I look at the code generated by the Designer in Visual Studio, I can understand what is going on there. But, to sit down and write that code instead of using the Designer to me seems impossible. There is just so much there. From what I understand, ASP.Net and Visual Studio were created to help streamline the code writing process. I suppose if I was used to writing VB code to create applications I might look at this from a different angle. But, I am learning ASP.Net using the VS Designer. Any comments or suggestions from experienced coders? I really don't want to have a battle between people who use the Designer and the Source Code editor. I am just hoping for some comments that will help newbies. Thanks.

Question about Published BIN directory

Hi everyone,

After I publish my site and I take a look at the bin directory I notice a lot extra directors that seem to be associated with the Ajax Control Toolkit such as ar,cs,de,es,fr    Could any explain what these folders are and do I have to have them? Also I notice it seems to publish the .pdb file for the AjaxControlToolKit can I delete these when I place them on my server?

I am using VS2008 .net 3.5

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Data Flows in SSIS - Mapping Multiple source tables to Destination table **Newb question**

Hi I am new to SSIS and had a basic question. I have around 30+ tables in a db that needs to be migrated to a newer schema in the DB. The data flow task seems to be ideally suited for my requirement. My question is do I need to create 30+ different data flow tasks for this which will get executed one after the other or is there a better way to migrate large number of tables. Also how are referential constraints taken care of during such migration. Thanks and Regards, Ganesh Ranganathan

people picker need to customize source of active directory users

Issue- setting the people picker to custom active directory OU

Scenario - The ad structure

     Company name(root)

                 General Users(OU)

Steps Taken

1)stsadm -o setsiteuseraccountdirectorypath -path "OU=STAFF,DC=domain,DC=com" -url http://domain.com

2)stsadm -o setproperty -url http://domain.com -pn peoplepicker-serviceaccountdirectorypaths -pv " OU=STAFF,DC=domain,DC=com "

They  dont seem to have any effect on the people picker control as i can still get  all the users from all the different OUs.

I want to strict  it to the Staff OU.

IT seems really strange

In the Central admin > shared Services Providers> User Profile> Custom Source > I have set OU=STAFF,DC=domain, dc=com.

I found that the people picker is not connected to the user profiles.

Any Idea Guys

Dynamic directory location for "Flat File Source"

I am using a "Flat File Source" to read from a source file. Now I want the directory location to be dynamic because it will change during migration from development to UAT to Production.

Can anyone help me here on this. Ofcourse my intention is not to open and modify the package after migrating into a different environment. Actually I want to store the directory location in a table and want the "Flat File Source" to read the location form that table duing runtime. But not sure whether can I achieve this or not. If yes then how?

Design/Concept Question involving External Source

I have a design/concept question. I’m currently in the midst of developing a WPF Application which is a basic “data massager”. However the data is originating from a piece of equipment. This piece of equipment can be configured to send results/data to an external source, for example a traditional ASP page where the data would be encapsulated in the URL as a parameter. Normally I would develop a quick ASP page to capture the data in the URL and import into a table. However due to process flow it’s best to have the data captured in my WPF Application prior to a table insert.

Is it possible to have a WPF Application get called (similar to a URL) and receive data via parameter? I’m look for a point in the right direction. Maybe an online resource?

Thanks in advance!

Building a Searchable Phone Directory with Windows SharePoint Services

I want to continue to build out the intranet site we've started in our previous articles. A standard item in every intranet is a staff/employee list. Most companies implementing Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) are large enough to have a database that contains all employees. We will use the aggregation features of SharePoint to include data from this database into our intranet.

Microsoft StyleCop: Source Code Analyzer for C#

StyleCop is similar in many ways to Microsoft Code Analysis (specifically FxCop), but there are some important distinctions. FxCop performs its analysis on compiled binaries, while StyleCop analyzes the source code directly. For this reason, FxCop focuses more on the design of the code, while StyleCop focuses on layout, readability and documentation. Most of that information is stripped away during the compilation process, and thus cannot be analyzed by FxCop.

C# and XML Source Code Documentation

Through many years of enterprise level software development and consulting, I became critically aware of the importance of good source code documentation, and several years ago when I began working with the first release of Visual Studio .NET beta 1 and found C# provided built-in support for inline XML code documentation, I was thrilled.

abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

ASP.NET provides a configuration system we can use to keep our applications flexible at runtime. In this article we will examine some tips and best practices for using the configuration system for the best results.

The element of a web.config file is a place to store connection strings, server names, file paths, and other miscellaneous settings needed by an application to perform work. The items inside appSettings are items that need to be configurable depending upon the environment, for instance, any database connection strings will change as you move your application from a testing and staging server into production.

Let's abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

Formview LinqData source not allowing updates

OK, I'm confused.  I've set up a formview with a Linqdata source to allow users to edit records.  When I run it, edit data and submit, it blows up and tells me "Linq datasource6  does not support the Select property when the Delete, Insert or Update operations are enabled."  I googled that warning and saw a couple of posts on this forum saying the problem is the slect statement has to be removed from the Linq data source for it to allow updates.

But if I remove the select statement then how do I show the user specific info on pageload?   plus I thought the two way databind was an advantge of the datasource control.

Some basic MVC question

  1. In regular asp net I can run (debug) the application but I can either "view in browser" that gives me the option to view the application and write code on same time.

In MVC I can't find this option.

  1. What is the basic DATA MODEL for working with SQL DB.

I mean with no any framework (entity framework, Sub sonic, Link to SQL etc')

I look for basic application that works with data but with no fw.

  1. What is the popular DB framework that working with data.
  2.  I am looking on  mvc series

C# Soup To Nuts  (the best series ever)

I watch some of the MVC video, seems that the music store is good but I have to wait to the other part.

Does any one know and recommend   a Microsoft MVC tutorial?

Web Site to Web Application Question

I've been building web sites and for my next project I will be creating a web application.  I use a 'BasePage' class in all my projects but, since web applications do not contain the 'App_Code' folder, what is the best place/practice for the 'BasePage' class?

connection string question from a newbie

when publishing  in the webmatrix dialogue it asks for "destination connection string" for my "database.mdf"

I was not sure what it was so I pasted this from my web.config file :

Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True

it all published ok, but wont run, so I guess it has somthing to do with this connection string or some kind of configuration issue.

My question is this, What should go in the field for "Destination connection string"

ASP.NetWindows Application  .NET Framework  C#  VB.Net  ADO.Net
Sql Server  SharePoint  Silverlight  Others  All
