Calendar View for External Data List in SharePoint 2010?

I'd like to create a calendar view from data contained in an External List.  My external content type has a Start Date, End Date, and other calendar fields.  Is this possible using the out of the box BCS?

For extra credit - I'd like to then use this calendar as an overlay on other calendars within my SharePoint 2010 application.

Thanks for your help!

Sharepoint Foundation - Create and deploy custom edit/view forms for external lists

Firstly, we are using sharepoint foundation so Infopath forms are not an option for us.

We have a Visual Studio sharepoint project which deploys a complete sharepoint site. The site contains a number of external lists and we want to be able to create customised view/edit forms for these lists and add them to our Visual Studio project so they can be deployed as part of the new site. The idea is that we can deploy the solution to a fresh site with a default set of forms which can then be customised for different implementations of the site.

Here's the steps we have been using to try and do this:

1. Deploy the base project (BDC) to the sharepoint site

2. Create external lists based on the BDC content types

3. Use Sharepoint Designer to create new edit/view forms for the lists and set these as the default forms for the list

3. Save the site as a template

4. Import the template into a new Visual Studio project and select the lists we require. This gives us a List Definition, a pages module (with element file), an elements file and a schema file (both for the List Instance).

5. We then add the contents of the imported project to our main solution as follows:

  • Create a new List Definition (including List Instance)
  • Copy the contents of the imported Elements.xml to the Elements file for our List Instance.

Create View in an External List that Gets a Field from Another External Content Type via Foreign Key

I currently have two tables in a SQL Server 2k8 database: Locations and Customers

The fields in the Locations table are:

  • LocationName
  • StreetAddress
  • City
  • State
  • ZIP
  • CusotmerID (foreign key joined to Customers table)

The fields in the Customers table are:

  • ID (primary key)
  • CustomerName
  • CurrentBalance

Through SharePoint Designer, I have both tables set up as External Content Types of the same names as the tables and have created External Lists for each External Content Type. All CRUD operations are working perfectly. I added the proper Assocaiation and I've set CustomerName to be the Title of the Customers External Content Type. I can currently use a picker for CustomerID in the Locations List and CustomerName is displayed properly. Also, the default DispForm also correctly displays the CustomerName for any single Location record.

However, I would like to modify the default ReadList so the foreign key (CustomerID) will show the Title field of Customers (CustomerName). However, I am running into trouble finding out how to do this.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!!

SharePoint 2010 crawling external websites not working

I have a SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Installation on two Windows 2008 R2 Server with an additional SQL 2008 R2 Server also on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. My problem is now that I cannot crawl external websites. Local SharePoint sites and File share are working, only external websites are not working. I have a SharePoint 2007 and also a SharePoint 2008 Search Server Express running on which I can crawl the same websites without problems. I set the DisableLoopbackCheck DWORD on booth server in the registry but this didn’t help. The warring in the evenlog is changing it depends on the crawled URL. Here are the two warrings:

Source: SharePoint Server Search
Event ID: 14

The start address http://www.exampleurl1.ch cannot be crawled.

Context: Application 'Search_Service_Application_01', Catalog 'Portal_Content'

Access is denied. Verify that either the Default Content Access Account has access to this repository, or add a crawl rule to crawl this repository. If the repository being crawled is a SharePoint repository, verify that the account you are using has "Full Read" permissions on the SharePoint Web Application being crawled.   (0x80041205)

Rendering Area Partial view from External Dll

I am quite new to MVC and am gradually overcoming all my 'but WebForms can do that' issues but I still have one.

I wish to have components which I can deploy into an Area in order to keep things nice and tidy. This area will have a bunch of re-usable partial views like this.

I can render this MyAreaControl partial view fine in other Views inside that area but it fails when I try to render it from a not inside the area (e.g. view in the root of the site).

I am essentially using this syntax

<% Html.RenderPartial("MyAreaControl", new { area = "MyArea" }); %>
which seems to only look for this partial view inside the root Views folder, not the area one despite me specifying the area.
Is this a restriction of the system, a bug - or am I just doing it wrong.

How to populate forms with data from external websites?

I have many lists containing columns for customer account data, which must be filled in manually each time because the customer data is not in Sharepoint or any database accessible by Sharepoint (I have found articles that discuss pulling data from MySQL and Oracle SQL databases).  The customer data is accessed through a website hosted on a different domain.  (I'm not sure how that website works.  I assume the html pages are just a frontend for a database of some kind.  Maybe it's possible to cut out the middle man and get Sharepoint to access that database.  But, it's not a website I control, so I don't know how much I could learn about it.)  I had been using Greasemonkey scripts to query that website and populate the fields in Sharepoint.  This works for me, but not for everyone else--not everyone uses Firefox or knows how to use Greasemonkey, and there's no central management of Greasemonkey scripts.  I'd like to do it all in Sharepoint.

I know how to use javascript within Sharepoint content editor, but my scripts for pulling data from a website don't work.  Someone more knowledgeable than me thinks it's because of Sharepoint security features preventing the script from accessing another domain, and that he can make it work by hosting a proxy within Sharepoint and querying through that proxy.  I'd like

Truly Understanding View State

This article provides a detailed understanding of the ViewState.

GridView Parent Child View with JQuery Effects

I was just checked how to add some more cool effects to the GridView control using JQuery. In this post I will display parent-child data in the GridView control with some help of the wonderful JQuery library.

Let's first populate the GridView control.

Model View Controller (MVC) for ASP.NET

Model View Controller (MVC) architectures, immediately wonder how the MVC pattern can be applied in an ASP.NET world. This article will demonstrate how the MVC pattern can be applied to an ASP.NET web application and still maintain the basic Microsoft supplied architecture.

view state vs request parameters

If  the view state is the data entered into the form fields then they are supposed to be available in the request parameters or request body. Then why would we need view state for?

partial view, 2 controllers

This is my first visit to the forums, I hope someone here can help me

I'm writing a small webapplication for creating repair tickets and adding comments, really basic

now I'm writing this in MVC2

So I have 2 controllers, 1 HomeController that does everything related to the tickets (listing tickets, creating new ones, editing) and 1 controller for the comments

the edit view for the homecontroller contains a partial view for /comment/create

so /home/edit/ticketnumber can edit the title and status of the ticket on the left side of the screen, the right side of the screen contains the partial view for adding comments

this is done like this:

Html.Renderaction("Create", "Comment");

but if I look at the generated html code when running the app, both save buttons go to /home/edit/ticketnumber

so the comment is never saved.

I hope this makes sense and that someone can help me solve this

WebDev.WebServer.exe has encounted a problem and needs to close when trying to view page in browser

Hi, whenever I load an aspx page in vwde2008, I get the message in the subject of this post.  After I click Ok on that, I get a dialog box, Unable to Connect to the ASP.Net development center.  What can I do to troubleshoot?

I am using Windows XP SP3, vwde2008 with SP1, on a HP desktop.  Also using Office 2003 if that is relevant at all.

Thanks, Justin
