Question on Searching with Cross Farm Services

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 08, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

have to Sharepoint 2010 Farms - called FarmA and FarmB. Both farms have web applications and content. FarmA is also a publisher of the Search Service Application. It has been configured to crawl content in both FarmA and FarmB.

I have successfully published the Search Service and the consuming FarmB see results from both farms when I do a search from a Enterprise Search Center site collection. The issue that I'm having is that when I do the same search in FarmA, I only see results from FarmA. I'm not sure if the results are getting security trimmed. I am using different farm accounts for earch farm, though I am accessing both web applications with my account. Or is there some additional configuration required on FarmA to show results from FarmB.

Any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance Brian Denicola

Office: Relive the Moment by Searching Your IM Logs with Custom Research Services

Often, IM conversations contain important information you'd like to keep and reuse. Fortunately, MSN Messenger 6.2 has a feature to keep a conversation history permanently in XML format. This article shows you how to leverage that conversation history by consolidating IM exchanges so they are indexed, searchable, and ultimately reusable using the Microsoft Office 2003 Research and Reference task pane.

Basic question about web services

I followed an example on how to create a simple web service that converts celsius to fahrenheit. It seems to work alright. After the conversion it outputs the new value in xml. What do you do with the value that's in xml? Do you use an Xmlreader to read it from the xml, or what is usually done after the value is generated in xml?

Bookmarking via Services Question

When I set a bookmark via a service?  Right now in my NativeActivity I CreateBookmark, then track the Activity so I know about pending bookmarks... But the problem with the darn service is that it freezes (waits for response?)...and it's not persisting to the DB.  Is this an option in the webconfig that I perhaps haven't set? :) ...and how do I go about RESUMING that bookmark? Thanks, Steve

Full Farm Backup Fails on Windows Sharepoint Services Search Database

I am just now starting to us central administration to backup the entire sharepoint farm.  All content backups fine except for the Search Database.  In looking through the backup log, it appears that the search database may not exist.  How can I determine if the search database actually does exist and if it does not can it be recreated?

Farm Configuration Question

I work for a community hospital. We are planning a Sharepoint 2007 install in our Win2003 domain. While I have recommended a medium farm configuration with a separate server for Web, application and database, we will probably, at least initially, use the small farm configuration of web/app server and database server. If later we need to expand and add servers how difficult will it be if we start with the small farm configuration? Can we just add more web/app servers or will we need to split roles so each tier is on its own server?

Profile EMM fields error when using Mysites cross farm (SP2010 RTM)

I have a question that took me a while already. I set up an evironment at a Customer of mine as following:

2 farms:

Farm 1 (publishing farm (PF)):
Service applications (User profile and metadata services)

Farm 2 (consuming farm (CF)):
Webapplications (my.portal.nl webapplication).

I published all the services on the PF and succesfully made a connection to the service throughout the CF. The mysite host location is created under the my.portal.nl webapp.

Everything seems to work perfect. The only thing that doesn't work is the following: When I open the my site host and want to edit my profile properties all the fields that need keywords or metadata are not reachable. When I put the my site host location on the publishing farm --> IT WORKS....

I get the red error beneath every EMM field that says: "the service is temporarily disabled...."

I believe I missed a configuration step somewhere in de connection part between the webapp and the service app when going cross farm????

I think problem is somewhere in the combination of Cross farm, Managed Metadata and User profile service....

Can anybody help me with this problem??

Thanks in advance!

How to scale from Single Farm Services to Enterprise Farm Services

I have a question onHow to scale from Single Farm Services to Enterprise Farm Services. i.e

Today , if i have a Farm with All Services like Managed metadata and Search running .. . but  tommorow  client introduce 2 new farms then there are 2 options w.r.t to service sharing

a) either do cross farms sharing of services ... which i understand how it will happen

b) or because of XYZ reasons , go for Enterprise Service Farms which hosts your manage metadata service / Earch for all your farms ....

So, question is in this case how one will move existing managed metedata / Search service to Enterprise Service Farm ?

Newbie Question about Web Services

Hi I'm learning Sharepoint and doing exercises in a text book (Sahil Malik - Apress).

I have a site  http://spdev/sites/SiteCollection1

I am creating a custom field type which calls a web service which is part of the solution

The web service seems to be created at the root http://spdev/_vti_bin

So my code in the sub site is calling code in a webservice which does the following code

Cross domain javascript callback is not supported in authenticated services.

i am getting following errors to run WCF 4.0 web services.

Cross domain javascript callback is not supported in authenticated services.

after commenting following lines in web.config file now wcf project is working fine. what is the wrong in my side.

WCF - Basic Design Question Regarding No. Of Services vs No. of Tables

Let's say you have N tables, and you want to write CRUD as per table not in an OO fashio.

How many WCF services are required?

is it near 5 * N (C,U,D, R and List with different criteria)?

Or would you have 1 service that takes care of all the CRUD?

What would be the interface (parameters) passed to such a service.

The number does not really matter, in fact the only thing I care about is the architecture.

If you are not able to provide detailed answers, please point me to where I can learn more about this.

Thank you.

MOSS 2007 Services Not Starting After Adding 2008 R2 WFE to 2003 R2 Farm

In preperation for our 2010 upgrade we have been migrating our 2003 R2 infrastructure to 2008 R2. Our prior environment was server 2003 R2 DB server running SQL 2005 and one 2003 R2 WFE. We migrated the DB server to 2008 R2 and SQL 2008. The next step was to add a 2008 R2 WFE and then decommision the 2003 R2 WFE.

Setup was successful on the 2008 R2 box. However, in CA the services on the 2008 R2 WFE show "Starting". The CA service is the only service that shows "Started" on the 2008 R2 box. The Document Conversions Launcher Service, Document Conversions Load Balancer Service, Windows SharePoint Services Search and Windows SharePoint Services Web Application show "Starting". The Windows SharePoint Services Administration does not display a status.

What step am I missing to get all of the services running on the new 2008 R2 WFE so I can turn off the 2003 R2 WFE? I don't see anything in the error logs.

How to get a list of all the BCS services in a farm

This question is pretty similar to this post

I have been searching the web using this post as an example to try and find the missing pieces.  I would like to get a list of all the BCS services in the SharePoint farm and show them in a list to the user.

I have tried searching for SPServiceApplicationProxyGroup, BdcServiceApplicationProxy, and a few other bits and pieces.  I don't know if I am tired or really dense, but I am missing something obvious here.  Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction because right now i am left with reading MSDN object trees hoping to find something that strikes a chord.

Question on Reporting Services 2005 Date from iseries to ssrs

I was wondering I am using SQL server reporting services 2005 and I-series to gather my data.
I need to convert a date from yymmdd to mmddyyyy to use the calendar in a parameter. Is there anyway to do this? I have tried many different ways with no success. basically because the date in the i-series is 110414 (today's date) The datetime option on parameter will not work. I can use it as a string and type it in. I would really like to convert it to 04/14/2011 so that I can let the user select from a calendar. Let me know if you know anyway or anywhere I can post it to get an answer to this question.
Thank you

Installing and Uninstalling Services

Installing and Uninstalling Services.Unlike most projects you create in Visual Studio .NET, Windows Service projects cannot be run directly from the development environment by pressing F5. This is because the service in the project must be installed before the project can run.

You can quickly install your service application by using a command line utility called InstallUtil.exe.

Getting Started with Windows SharePoint Services

Of all of the capabilities of SharePoint, I thought I would start with the most basic installation - as a corporate intranet. It is likely that we will need to discuss some of the elements of SharePoint as we go along, so this also gives us the opportunity to review these elements for future reference.

Before going into too much detail, I would like to point out that you can try the core SharePoint framework (known as Windows SharePoint Services or WSS) for free. On Microsoft's Web site you can download a trial version of Virtual PC 2004 (VPC). Using VPC, you can install the Windows 2003 Evaluation Kit and the WSS add-on. This combination will give you 45 days to evaluate the setup.
