Can't connect to SQLEXPRESS on another machine on LAN

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 08, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

This is a Workgroup environment; i.e., no Domain, no DC. I'm attempting to connect to MACHINEB\SQLEXPRESS from SSMS 2008 using Windows Authentication. SSMS is running on MACHINEA -- so the default (and I can't change it) username is MACHINEA\mylogon. There is a similar account on MACHINEB; i.e., username is <mylogon> and password is the same as on MACHINEA. This works fine for browsing files, etc.; however apparently it does NOT work for SQLEXPRESS access.

The error I get is the "Server not found or was not accessible..." message. My guess is that this is a security issue and that maybe I need to use SQL Server Authentication, but I'd prefer not to do that if I can avoid it. So, is there a way to access SQL across a LAN using Windows Authentication?

Is it possible to connect to a machine within a Lan if given mac address?

If a machine is within a Lan, with a Lan IP address such as 192.168.1.100, and its mac address is fixed and known, such as A4:B5:......, the machine is connected to internet through a router with a public IP address. Is it possible to directly connect to the machine from internet using its router IP address and its mac address?   thanksRegards! directfriends.net

Search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component

I encounter the error above when trying to set up Sharepoint Server Search. I have tried both setting up search manually through Central admin (just selecting default for everything) as well as through Powershell (using this: http://stsadm.blogspot.com/2009/12/creating-sharepoint-2010-enterprise.html). I'm using the farm admin as Search account as well as account for Application pools, so I guess permissions should not be the issue.Creating new Search service application seems to be successful, but when going to Searchadministration after creation, then System status displays the error above. Event log does add any info and just displays same error message ("SearchApi.cs throws exception:The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component 'db397ab0-d9b0-46c4-9077-dc8be62bf586' in search application 'TNS Enterprise Search Service Application' is in a good state and try again."). I have found this http://blog.fpweb.net/sharepoint-2010-server-search-troubleshooting/ stating that the solution is not to use MSDN version of Windows 2008, but does give any explanation why.Any ideas would be appriciated.Best regardsThomas

Cannont connect to New Installation of SQL SERVER 2008 from New Vista Ultimate machine(s)

I have a new SQL Server 2008 Development edition installation on a Newly setup Server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition.  The server is mainly a file server and is not setup as a domain controller.  Since my test environment is fairly basic (server and two Vista Ultimate machines) I thought the connection through data sources on the client machines would be straight forward.  But it isn't working.  I can see the server, ping the server, etc. but when I try and connect the client through a system DNS it will not connect using SQL Server authentication using a loginId.  (since it isn't on a domain, I can't use Windows NT Authentication).   The error is SQL Error 10060 and SQL Error 17.  (connection failed and SQL Server does not exist or access denied)  Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component

I'm expierencing this error message and am not sure what to do to fix this.  I don't want to break anything else on our farm.   The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component '9139bef7-69a3-4125-9d0e-e09484cc24ee' in search application 'Search Service Application' is in a good state and try again. Nothing appears under topology.  It just continues to load.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component.

I just installed the FAST Content Search Service Application.  However, when going to Application Management -> Manage Service Application -> FAST Content SSA, I see the following error:

Clicking on Content sources brings me to

SQL Authentication within SQLExpress Not Able to Connect to SQL User from Visual Studio?

I detached a database from sql server 2005 to an mdf file. I am able to logon to this mdf file from server management studio within sqlexpress instance using the sql user/pwd with no problem.

Within Visual Studio however, if I try to connect useing  the Server Explorer, I receive the error:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed."

I went into Advanced Properties and changed User Instance to False, and then get this error:
"Create Database Permission denied in database "master". An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file "c:\......mdf" failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I opened the database again in management studio and detached it from sqlexpress, but still get same errors.

This issue is similar to the one posted here
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/ec9f1ded-1b9e-476d-acd9-77caf79a47b4/

Error 26 while trying to Connect to a SQLExpress 2005 database on a remote computer

I have installed SQL Express 2005 on two computers networked and running windows XP.  I've copied the database from the first computer to the second and run queries on both to show that both computers have an active database that is up and running.  Now I am trying to use the Sql Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) on the first machine to establish contact with the second machine.  In order to have the two machines communicate I've configured the SQL Server on the second machine as follows:

Under the protocols for the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration I've enabled the TCP/IP pipes and set the TCP/Dynamic ports to 1032 (when I ran netstat -a it indicated that this was an active connection which I think this means it is available - though it says that the port has a Foreign Address and it State is listening).  As an aside the port 1433 was not among the active connections.

Both the SQLServer and the SQLServer browser are running (which presumably means they are both enabled).

I've run the surface Area Configuration For Services and Connections Tool to Set the SQLExpress Remote connections for Local and remote connections using TCP/IP and named pipes.

The Client Protocols for the SQL Native Client Configuration is stillset so that the default port is 1433.

Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 Database without being admin of the machine

I am receiving the following error when I try to connect to my new SQL Server 2008 R2 machine:

Msg 18452, Level 14, State 1, Server <server name>, Line 1 Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication.

I'm running the following command to test the connection:

sqlcmd -S<Server Name> -E -Q"Select @@servername"

On the server I'm getting the following from the SQL Server logs

03/31/2011 20:31:58,Logon,Unknown,Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. [CLIENT: 172.20.146.95]

03/31/2011 20:31:58,Logon,Unknown,Error: 18452<c/> Severity: 14<c/> State: 1.

03/31/2011 20:31:58,Logon,Unknown,SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 172.20.146.95]

03/31/2011 20:31:58,Logon,Unknown,Error: 17806<c/> Severity: 20<c/> State: 2.

What is odd is if I put the domain user in as Admin of the machine then it connects just fine.  I have tried just about everything I can find and I just cannot get it to work. Anyone have any clues???

Client can't connect to WCF on deployment machine Windows 2003 Sp2 server .NET 3.5

Hello,

I have a WCF service hosted in a Windows service application.  I have a Windows Form client that connects to it.  I am using net.tcp binding for two endpoints.   It all works fine in my environment, but when I deploy it on my cutomer's machine the client does not get a response from the service.

I ran netstat -na and I can see the endpoints listening.  I can even see the connection ESTABLISHED when my client runs the first method.  But my client times out and receives a "Could not communicate with XXX service.  This request operation sent to net.tcp..... did not receive a reply within the configured timeout (00.01.00) The time alloted... etc"

I tried removing all security from the configuration file, but that did not make a difference.

I reinstalled .NET Framework 3.5

I added     System.Net.ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 200 as suggested in another post.

I am creating a trace for the client and the server.  The server does not log any activity of a connection.  The client is catching a communication exception.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  What else can I try to see why the client is not able to chake hands with the server on this particular machine?

Many thanks,

Karen
