Can sys.dm_exec_sql_text ever be blocked?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 08, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I am trying to make to a blocking monitor using sys.dm_exec_sql_text. But on some occasions the Blocking monitor, which should take less than a second, take up to 10 seconds. By placing statements throughout the blocking monitor query to put entries into a table with the time of execution, I've narrowed it down to the cross apply of the  sys.dm_exec_sql_text  statement.

I was wondering if its possible that this statement could get blocked

Can Web Services be blocked by Central administration ?

I am a Site Collection administrator. I am thinking of using Web Services (_vti_bin/Lists.asmx etc.,) and display some data regarding Lists, Permissions, SubSites on some pages. My question is whether accessing these web services at site level can be blocked by central administration or not. If they cannot be blocked, then I would like to go forward on what I have mentioned above. Can anyone please clarify. Thanks.

WCF communication blocked by firewall (or something)

So here's the deal... I have a web application with WCF services hosted in the web while the client is a WinForm app. Even though the web app listens on both port 80 and 443, some clients (PC clients) can't reach the services getting a TimeoutException.  In some cases I figured out the was a local antivirus (i guess with a firewall) called Nod32 wich was blocking the communication, I had to add my client "as a browser" and it sterted to work just fine. But in some other clients there are firewall preventing the communication. So, I have two questions. 1) Is there anything I can do in my client app to give the user better info about the problem? (The timeoutException does not say anything really). and... 2) What should I tell a Network Administrator that needs to be 'open' for the client to connect?   Let me know if anybody needs further info about config to answer these questions.   regards, Seba    http://sgomez.blogspot.com

Multiple File Uploads and blocked file types.

Hi hopefully someone can help me with this. I have removed a few file type extensions from the blocked file type administration interface (.ascx, ashx, dll) etc. If I browse to my shared folder I am able to load files of these types into my shared folder on a file by file basis, if however I try and use the drag and drop activex control facility for multiple files provided for IE8, files of these types are still blocked. If I also map a network drive from my PC to the shared folder and attempt to copy files of the above types, they're also being blocked. Perhaps someone has come across a similar issue and can shed some light on what they did to overcome this problem. Kind regards Paul

Blocked Job

The jobs wait type is CXPACKET. Would someone let me know how I can resolve this please? Thank you

log in blocked in IE at high privcay settings and in safari

Hi,A bit of a strange problem, two separate ones actually. Safari and chrome log ins used to work fine, until I put the log in into an update panel. Once that was done, log in worked, but the panel did not update, so you had to reload the site to see you were actually logged in.There is a work around, a fix, to this issue:http://forums.asp.net/t/1252014.aspx?PageIndex=1I used the solution in the second post. This solved the problem and in chrome (which apparently is similar to safari in this way) login now works very nice. However, in safari, log in does not work at all now. It recognizes wrong passwords, hence is obviously querying the database. But it is not allowing a log in.This is similar to what I have seen with high privacy settings in IE. They do the exact same thing (and we still have this problem, like other sites i have seen do too). Somehow the js script patch for the update panels must mess with safaris privacy settings perhaps?Has anyone had a similar problem? How can it be solved? Is there a better way to solve the update panel problem in safari? Can the log in problem be overcome? Surely many people put their log ins into update panels and want safari users to be able to log in.Strange that this is so difficult, but perhaps I am just doing something obviously wrong.Would be interesting to hear from someone with experience in this issue.Thank you very much.Best r

Your upgrade is blocked.. when adding components to SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Hello, I am having a problem when trying to add the Client Components to an existing installation of SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1 running on Windows 2003 Standard. The server was originally built with SQL 2005 Standard Edition and had SP1 installed at a later date. I am using the CD that SQL was originally installed with which is not a service packed copy of SQL. The reason given when clicking the details button is as follows: Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online. Build version check: Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Steve

how to get SP name from sys.dm_exec_sql_text

I am trying to run a query that will tell me the name of a stored procedure from a sql handle. I obtained the handle from a sql server blocked process report as:

ReportViewer and Blocked Requests

Here's a thing that has me baffled.

We have a ReportViewer control (version 9) in an ASP.Net page. It runs reports from a remote Reporting Services server (version 2008) and uses the IReportServerConnection stuff for setting network credentials. However, when a user runs a report (a long-running one) it blocks any further requests to the web site until it has rendered. Indeed, other users can not even get to the start page of the site until the report has finished.

Now, I have done all the usual things like set AsyncRendering=true, use SessionServer as the state service and turning the number of worker threads down to 1. Still no joy. Is it really the case that the ReportViewer control can only run one report at a time?

Whatever it is, I feel dumb. Any help is pathetically gratefully received.

How to get my popup blocked from an anchor tag

I use Flash in my website to open some popups, which instead calls my popup blocker because the browser doesn't recognise the flash click as user input.  I'm trying to force the user to accept popups within my site.  To do so, I have a button which calls a javascript function which in turns calls a window.open.  The problem is that that popup goes through since it came from user input.  My question is, since it's unlikely that I can circumvent popup blockers to enable window.open from my Flash, is there a way to make the blocker appear from a regular click?  Thanks a lot.

MVC 2 in VS2008 blocked by VS2010?

Hey there,

At my workplace, I need to use VS2008 and VS2010 as required by different projects. That's cool, except I now need to use MVC 2.

I installed VS2010 and as such have MVC 2 installed, but VS2008 still does not recognise MVC 2 projects. If I try and install MVC 2 using the specific installer for VS2008, it fails because it can see the MVC 2 is already installed!

So (after that windy explanation), is there a simple way I can get VS2008 to recognise MVC 2 projects, or will I need to uninstall MVC 2, install MVC 2 for VS2008, and then again for VS2010! I'm REALLY trying to avoid uninstalling all of VS2010 and reinstalling - there's almost a whole day there!

WCF JSON - The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a packet.

I'm running a WCF web service which exposes an XML and a JSON interface. Almost all functions work well for both response formats. However, when rendering certain a couple calls the XML functions work perfectly but the JSON equivalent doesn't work. After looking through the logs I found that the Windows Filtering Platform seems to be blocking the JSON response. I've included the xml equivalent package:

visual studio 2010 and 2008 ide on windows 7 64 bit seems to be blocked from reading the registry

I am using:
1. visual studio 2008 and visual studio 2010
2. windows 7 ultimate
3. 64 bit gateway
4. I am using a third party control that has been registered using regsvr32
5. its wrapper was created with 64 bit aximp
6. The code runs but  in design mode nothing shows:
Warning 1 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))  0 0

7.I used regedit and tried to give all the user's permission to read the registry entry for the item - didn't work.

8. The same code and situation works fine in windows vista home: which means  visual studio cannot read the registry on the windows 7 pc

What do I need to do

WebMethod call won't return ASAP. Seems blocked by other iframe call.

XP Pro,aspnet 2, IIS, Oracle

I have a primary webpage that displays a tab and some summary data. The tab uses an iframe and the summary data is loaded by an async WebMethod call back to C#. The iframe page takes a short while to load depending on how much data is in there (sometimes upto 20 seconds?). The WebMethod call, or at least the content of it, is very fast. BUT, the WebMethod call won't return until basically the iframe has finished loading.

I've verified through Fiddler that the browser is initiating both requests at basically the same time. It's initiating the iframe call first followed immediately by the WebMethod call within the same second. My understanding is that browsers are limited to only two calls at once.

If I set a breakpoint at the end of my WebMethod call (even commenting out ALL it's guts so it just returns an empty string), that breakpoint won't fire until the aspnet page serving up the iframe has finished. Using threads window, I see both calls at the server. I just don't understand why the server won't actually run the Webmethod call until the first call has finished. I've searched the code looking Monitor.Enter, lock, etc to make sure nobody has inserted any other type of blocking code and I can't find anything. I've basically emptied out the WebMethod call and it just returns

How to get an email when my blocked process times out telling me what was blocking...

We have a C# process, Partner Synch, that sends some SQL to a SQL 2005 DB that times out about every three days or so. We know the SQL that times out, the victim, of the .NET command timeout. It is attempting to update one table and seems to be blocked by another process. We’d like to set up a trace of some sort that tells us as much as possible about what process is doing the blocking at the time of the timeout. Ideally, we’d like to know the SQL that is blocking our Partner Synch process, because then we could determine the C# or sproc responsible.

The blocking process ID is not too useful because we’d have trouble knowing what it corresponded to. Ideally, we’d like to see something like:
