SharePoint 2010 Backup Question

Posted By: Posted Date: October 07, 2010 Points: 0 Category :SharePoint

Hi Guys,

I have just configured my SP2010 backup and I want to make sure that I am not missing anything. I was hoping I could list off steps and precautions I have taken and that you could lend me some of your expertise.

  • I have a MOSS server and a SQL2008 server.
  • Symantec Backup Exec backs up the content database every night.
  • I have created a script to backup the SharePoint config every night. Saves it on my moss server in a backup directory. (gets cleaned out every 7 days)
  • I have created a script to backup the //MOSS site every night into the same backup directory. (over writes itself every night)
  • This backup folder, is backed up nightly using Symantec Backup Exec as well.
  • I am also backing up the logs folder in the 14 hive (using Symantec)

Is there anything else I should be backing up??? Am I missing anything?

Thank you

General question steps to configure mysites in SharePoint 2010

I am trying to configure the mysite web application, so I have created a DNS record "mysite" and created a web application for the mysite and created a mysite host site collection on it. Now I have read somewhere that u have to create managed paths for the profile and the mysite, which actually corresponds with the name of the DNS record/mysite webapp. For some reason when i am opening the mysite, i get a url something like http://my/my. What am i doing wrong? Can somebody just give me a step by step approach on how to configure Mysites in MOSS 2010?I am a SharePoint Infrastructure Engineer, focussed on Administration and Installation of SharePoint Server environments.

SA Question about SharePoint 2010

Hi, This is a fairly basic question but I wasn't able to find a specific answer. I would like to know the cost of Software Assurance for SharePoint 2010 - is it a % of the license cost? What Percentage please? OR Is it a fixed $ cost? Thanks, ~Trevor

Downgrading from Sharepoint 2010 Internet Enterprise to Standard (Purely a licensing rights question

My company already owns a license for Sharepoint 2010 Internet Enterprise. We are planning a two server Internet farm. We need to buy one more license and we only need the standard version which is significantly cheaper. Is it allowed to use Standard when we own a license for Enterprise?

Cannot Restore Backup from Sharepoint Server 2007 to Sharepoint Server 2010 Trial Version

After installing the trial version of Sharepointn 2010 I wanted to restore my Sharepoint 2007 sites to it but received the following error: "The site collection could not be restored. If this problem persists, please make sure the content databases are available and have sufficient free space." I went on to create a new content database in sharepoint 2010 but it still did not work. The old database i.e the one used by the sharepoint 2007 server is SQL 2005. During the installation of the sharepoint 2010 version I selected SQl Server Express for the database. Is there any specifics for migrating from MOSS 2007 to sharepoint 2010? Thanks for helping

RBS on SharePoint 2010 Question

Hopefully an easy question for you all. In the technet documentation on setting up RBS for SharePoint 2010, I noticed it states that you can provision a BLOB store only one time. Does that mean you can only use the RBS that you setup (eg, C:\Blobstore1) for the one Content database/web application associated with it and for each other web application I bring up, I need another blobstore? Thanks in advance.

Sharepoint 2010 core.js question

I was reading articles (mainly targeting SP 2007) that talked about changing the master page so that core.js is only loaded on demand for sake of performance. And for external facing sites with Anonymous users, delayed/asynchronous loading was recommended.

So I decided to take this to heart and began creating a secondary master page for my SP 2010 site. However, when I looked at the code, the both the existing v4.master and dayandnight.master were already set to use RegisterSod for all the js files. So have things changed with SP 2010 where this optimization is no longer necessary? Please advise.

Thanks in advance,

Your backup is from a different version of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation -- Sharepoint 2010

I made a backup of SharePoint farm from 2010 and tried to restore on a dev server and kept getting this error. I looked at the versions of SharePoint on both servers, and they were identical: 14.0.4763.1000

I'm posting this although it is not a question, but a statement that might help someone else. It took a while to notice that there had been an upgrade on the original server that the new dev box did not yet have... not an SP, but more like a hotfix type upgrade.

In Central Admin, go to "Upgrade and Migration". Click on "Check product and patch installation status". Scroll down the page of results and see if there are any links to updates that have been installed on the original server that are not on the new server, or vice-versa. I did find a link on my original server. Clicking on it opened the update page, so I copied the URL, went to my dev server, opened that page and installed the update, and voila!

Backup and Restore Sharepoint 2010 to new server

I have a Sharepoint 2010 server running SQL Express. (SERVER A) I have an identically configured Sharepoint 2010 server running SQL Express (SERVER B). I want to migrate the data from SERVER A to SERVER B. Does anyone out there have a step by step guide for this?

Question on Claims in SharePoint 2010

Hi All,

I have a claim based Application with SQL Server as Provider. I have created a web part and deployed on Claim based web application and now I am able to retrieve the Claim sets with below code

            IClaimsPrincipal claimsPrincipal =Page.user  as IClaimsPrincipal;

            IClaimsIdentity claimsIdentity = (IClaimsIdentity)claimsPrincipal.Identity;

This is good, now I have a Custom WCF Service Hosted in _Vti_bin and Avaiable to Claim Based Application as Virtual Directory.

So My question is : Can I Access claims same way as I am doing in Web Part as this WCF service is running under same context?

Am I missing something or this approach is possible?

Thanks in Advance!!

Backup SharePoint 2010 farm configuration settings only get an error for not enough disk space when

I am trying to do a backup the Backup using the Backup and Restore feature in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration. I just want to backup only the farm configuration settings only.

so I followed the GUI

Open CA Backup and Restore, checked the Farm checkbox, click Next

I chose the following:

Backup Type : Full

Data to backup: Back up only configuration settings

Backup File location : use an UNC shared location \\servername\sharedname

at this point, I see the Estimated disk space required is: 1.2 GB

the server hard disk available space is 30 GB

but when i click the Start Backup, i got an error in RED saying "There is not enough disk space. Free additional space on your hard disk and then try again. Approximate amount of space needed is 40 GB. Amount of space free on disk: 30 GB."

Why is this happened? and the estimated disk spaced required still showed at 1.2GB

If anyone had experience this problem and have a solution, please advice

SharePoint Foundation 2010 Hosting Question

Question about SharePoint Designer 2010 and Basic Authentication

I am trying to connect to an Office SharePoint Server 2010 on an external domain that is using Basic Authentication ... it won't prompt me for a username/password and doesn't do anything when I try to connect (even if I have a browser already logged in). If I switch it back to NTLM is opens fine and I can access the site.

Locally on our domain, if I try to access a server using Basic Authentication I get an error on the URL telling me 'The folder name is not valid'.

Any ideas on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated.

Sharepoint 2010 Foundation search question

I'm new to Sharepoint and have just setup 2010 Foundation. I know that it's search will only index the contents of Office docs and that you can't install ifilters in Foundation. However, I would think that all documents uploaded to a doc library should be searchable by file name, is that correct? However, using pdf's has an example, in my testing, search results come up empty when searching for keywords in the filename. In order to make these files searchable, I have to edit their properties and add a Title.

I know that not all users will bother to manually add a Title to all documents, so we need to be able to find files by their names, how is this possible?

SharePoint 2010 backup is failing - Error - "Unable to read full interval from database - Operation

I am having a problem backing up a site collection, when trying to backup the collection I get the following error "Unable to read full interval from database" and "operation is not valid due to the current state of the object".

The backup does run and manages to backup 182MB of the site collection and then the backup fails, it fails at the same point what ever backup method I use e.g. STSADM, Powershell or Central Admin.

I'm getting the same error whether I use CA "granular backup" or "Farm backup", and using either STSAMD or Powershell. I can backup CA or the mysite collection but not the Home Portal site collection. I even tried installing the commuvaults 2010 agents and running a commuvault backup but this is also failing. i have included the log file entry below.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to either fix the problem or an alternative way to backup the collection or farm, I am currently taking a full SQL backup but am not sure how reliable this is as I haven't tried to restore the sites.

P.S. I am not using the "UseSQLSnapshot" parameter.

SharePoint 2010 Unable to restore differential backup

Sharepoint 2010 farm and SQL server are two separate 2008 R2 servers. Ran full backup in the administration site and ran a differential of part of the site. Cannot restore the differential. It is looking for the full.

Here is the error message:

Object WSS_Content_PubSrv failed in event OnRestore. For more information, see the spbackup.log or sprestore.log file located in the backup directory.
SPException: The restore operation cannot locate the backup file F:\MSSQL\Backup\WSS_Content\SQL_WSS_Content_PubSrv_Full_201104111900.safe. Verify that the file exists and then run the operation again.

I tried mapped F to the F drive on the SQL server but it still fails. I have full rights and the service account has read rights to that directory on the SQL server. Share is full rights

Backup/Restore Sharepoint 2010 using Powershell.

Hello all!

I can't say, that i'm new in Sharepoint and particularly in Sharepoint 2010, but i've never used for Backup powershell, so i've got a question.

When i perform Backup using powershell i get as a result folder with a lot of .bak files within. To get know what .bak file to use for Restore of some DB i need to open that XML file, to find by the name needed DB and to restore. The problem is, that when i find needed DB in this XML file i see three .bak files for this DB like these:

1.<SPParameter Key="Features.xml">

- <![CDATA[00000047.bak ]]>
ASP.NetWindows Application .NET Framework C# VB.Net ADO.Net
Sql Server SharePoint Silverlight Others All
