Cannot start SQL Agent (2008)

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 07, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I have a server with SQL Express 2008 running on it.

SQL Agent service appears to be disabled, but when I try and start it I get the following error:

the sql server agent (SQLEXPRESS) service on local computer started and the stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do for example the Performance Logs and Alerts Service.

Anyone know whats causing this?

SQL Server 2008 Agent Fails to start in a Win 2008 Cluster

When I try to bring SQLAGENT Online, I get the following errors: EventID:53 [sqagtres] StartResourceService: Failed to start SQLSERVERAGENT service.  CurrentState: 1 [sqagtres] OnlineThread: ResUtilsStartResourceService failed (status 435) [sqagtres] OnlineThread: Error 435 bringing resource online.   I just did a fresh SQL Cluster install as well.  When I installed the cluster, the service account was good to go.  I cant figure out what is going on.  SQL Server Engine starts fine.  Any ideas?

Cannot start SQL Server Agent service on Cluster , 2008 R2

Hi,

I'm testing a two node cluster installation on windows 2008 r2 and sql server 2008 r2 both enterprise before a production deployment and my only issue so far is that the SQl Server Agent service cannot be started.

The failover works fine, the cluster and SQL services changes nodes without any problem but on both nodes i cannot start that service.

I'm using a domain user for the service, member of the local admin and sysadmin on the SQL server itself.

The error i get when i click on start from SQL management console is:

Unable to start service SQLAGENT$SQLTEST on server SERVERNAME. (mscorlib)

SQL Agent - service account permissions - SQL Server 2008

Hi @ all   I installed two SQL Server 2008 on Server 2008 R2 Std (principal and mirror) and an AD Server 2008, with sperate service accounts, connect as SA, localy all works fine. I created some agent tasks (PowerShell, T-SQL), but I get some Error massages in the history, that service account of SQL Agent didn't have the permission to query a remote machine(access denied for wmi (HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) and linked database(SQLSTATE 42000 Error(7314)). The simple query with SA permissions on the remote machine works and the powershell scripts with the local domain user works too. But not with the SQL Agent. WHY?? Where ist the different between the user account permisions and service account permissions? Which settings are needed? Example: get-wmiobject -class win32_service -computername 192.168.xxx.xxx| where {$_.name -like '*SQL*'} Powershell Console: works                                     SQL Agent Job: access denied I tried some solutions with user rights, group policies and security permissions but nothing works. like: Configuration -Service Accounts, SQL Server or SQL Server Agent service account http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283811/en-us http://msdn2.microsoft.com/

SQL Server 2008 express SQL Server Service won't start

Could really use some help. Am running XP Pro SP3.  Had 2005 Express running fine previously.  Installed 2008 Express but cannot get the SQL Server service to start.  SQL Server Agent does start though.  In log (below) it seems to be trying to access an E:\ drive that doesn't exist (did default install to C:\Program Files) - plus other issues.  Have 5gig+ free, so not sure why it's saying not enough space.  Have RTFMd the problem for a whole day with no luck.  Any advice much appreciated.   Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86)  Apr  2 2010 15:53:02  Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) (Hypervisor)   Error: 17054, Severity: 16, State: 1. How to start SQL Server 2005 (Visual Studio 2008)

I am just starting to work with Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to creat WPF apps and am trying to work with sql server. I want to create databases on my computer to be used with single client applications. When I try to see if the server is running it doesn't appear to be. Is there some special process that I need to do to start the server so I can create some sample databases to work with in Visual Studio? Working with Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005.

Cannot start Analysis Services 2008 service

Hi! I have Sql Server 2008 R2 and Analysis Services 2008. I could use it without problems for few days, but today, when I stop analysis service with Sql Server Configuration Manager and tried to start it again, it gives me error message: "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details". The msmdsrv.log file doesnt have any entries related to this error. Both Sql Server and AS are installed on my local machine and log on as LocalSystem. My system is XP sp3 professional.

User proc must start Agent job -- how?

My app must allow users to start a SQL Agent job to do a background operation.  I found a discussion on this and attempted to implement the last solution therein:
use [MyDB];
go

create PROCEDURE dbo.spStartAgentJob
	@pvJobName	nvarchar(100)
	WITH EXECUTE AS 'agentProxy'
AS
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_start_job @pvJobName
return
GO

create certificate agentProxy
    ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'pGFD4bb925DGvbd2439587y'
    with subject = 'agentProxy'
   , expiry_date='01/01/2100';
go

ADD SIGNATURE TO OBJECT::[spStartAgentJob]
      BY CERTIFICATE [agentProxy]
        WITH PASSWORD = 'pGFD4bb925DGvbd2439587y';
go

alter certificate [agentProxy]
  remove private key;
go

backup certificate [agentProxy]
 to file='c:\temp\agentProxy.cer';
go

use msdb
go

create certificate [agentProxy]
  from file='c:\temp\agentProxy.cer';
go

create user [agentProxyAuthenticator]
 from certificate [agentProxy];
go

grant authenticate to [agentProxyAuthenticator];
grant execute on msdb.dbo.sp_start_job to [agentProxyAuthenticator];
go

use [MyDB];
go

exec dbo.spStartAgentJob N'test'
go
The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_start_job', database 'msdb', schema 'dbo'.

SSIS Package / SQL Agent Job never ends on SQL 2008 R2

Hi

I have run into a strange problem and hoping someone may have a suggestion.

We have a set of SSIS packages that are developed in BIDS 2005. The packages are all executed by SQL Agent Jobs on a scheduled basis. These packages have been running on numerous SQL 2005 instances for the last year or so with no issues being experienced.

We recently has our first customer start running SQL 2008 R2 and we have internally upgraded to SQL 2008 R2 in our development environment. We are not converting the packages to SQL 2008 as we still need to support customers who are running SQL 2005. The problem is that in both our dev environment and at this particular customer, we have seem a random issue where the SQL Agent job never seems to end. Most of our jobs normally execute in less than 2 minutes, but occasionally (one or twice a week) a random job will just not end until we manually cancel it. We don't know if it is the SSIS package that is not ending or the SQL job.

We never experienced this on SQL 2005.

Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Any help will be much appreciated

ReportingServices will not start after 2008 to 2008R2 upgrade

Hello, A server was recently upgraded to 2008R2 from 2008. Before upgrade reportingservices was running. After upgrade, I cannot start ReportingServices from rsconfig, I receive this error.

 If I look into the Windows Application log I see this error.

Upgraded SQLServer 2008 Enterprise Evaluation after 180 day period expired...Services start but stil

Hello,

I have a SQLServer 2008 Enterprise (180 day eval) installation that had expired.

I downloaded and intalled SQLServer 2008 Enterprise (Full version) from Technet

and ran the "Version Upgrade" tool.

The Upgrade tool correctly identified the expired instance and reported that it

had successfully upgraded the expired instance.

The OS processes will start but when I attempt a connect, I get a "Evaluation Period Expired"

error message.

Is it possible to do an "upgrade in place" after the 180 day evaluation has expired or do

you have to uninstall then re-install ?

Many Thanks in Advance,

Hobson Black
