SharePoint 2010 External Content Type and InfoPath 2010 - Numeric data type fields missing in InfoPa

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 07, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Connected SQL data table to SP 2010 ECT from SQL table.  The SQL table has several fields that have a type of "numeric(3,0)".  The SP 2010 list shows all fields form SQL.  When we open up InfoPath Designer and reference the SP List data (from SQL) all of our numer fields are missing from the available fields list.

I amd going to try another data type but that hardly feels like a solution.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Using Additional Fields from External Content Type in InfoPath 2010 External Item Picker

Hello, we've created an external content type for our store locations. Each location in the content type has a name, id, manager, region and so on. When we use this BCS content type as a field in a list, we are given the option to "Add a column to show each of these additional fields"

What would the equivalent be in an InfoPath form? When we add an External Item Picker to a form a number of fields are included in the form's data source, including a repeating group called BDCEntity with the following fields:

  • EntityDisplayName
  • EntityInstanceReference
  • EntityId1
  • EntityId2
  • EntityId3
  • EntityId4
  • EntityId5

Entity display name appears to be what we configure as the Display Field Name in the picker properties, and the EntityId1 is the location ID, which is the identifier on the external content type. EntityId2-5 are all blank.

We use region and other location attributes in workflows so how can we access all these other fields?

Thanks for your time.

Error Creating External Content Type using Sharepoint Designer 2010

I am trying to create an external content type using Sharepoint Designer 2010. I ran SD on my local machine and connected to a site on some other machine running Sharepoint Server 2010. The Db on which I want to create my ECT resides on my local machine. When I try to use User Identity to connect to my local Db server, it gives me the error that login failed for user <my domain username>. I have both sql server and windows authentication mode login enabled on my sql server. Any help in this regard is appreciated.

How exactly does a SharePoint 2010 External Content type / list work?

I'm trying BCS on an SQL table which contains about 300,000 rows. Following is what I've observed:

1. A "SELECT * FROM <TABLE>" query fired on the SQL Table using SQL Management Studio returns all the result in 12 seconds
2. The same data when accessed by browsing the default view of external list (to which an External Content Type (ECT) built over the same SQL table in SharePOint Designer 2010 is attached) takes about 3:14 minutes

If I edit the ECT (using SharePoint Designer) and set limit as 100,000, it takes about 49 seconds to load, and further reduction in limit reduces the time to load.

My questions are:

1. What is it that causes so much delay in accessing the rows, as SQL delivers them in 12 seconds? Can anyone please help me understand the BCS / ECT architecture- how it accesses data, etc.
2. Can I implement paging in ECTs created using SharePoint Designer 2010?

Any help shall highly be appreciated. Thans in advance!

Inheriting from publishing page content type does not allow for overriding fields in SharePoint 2010

Hi there, we are creating custom content types that inherit from the "Page" content type.  We have found that we must have the "Inherits" property set to "TRUE" or else our custom content types do not show up in the content type gallery.  If we query the site collection using management shell the content type does appear to be there, but unfortunately it will not publish from the content type hub. If we set Interits=TRUE the content type deploys properly and appears in the content type gallery, but we cannot override (change the display name) or remove any of the inherited fields. Ultimately, we would like to have our content types inherit from "Page" and also override some of the "Page" fields, but this does not appear to be possible. We have spent quite a bit of time on this issue and are wondering if this is a bug or intential behavior of the "Page" content type. Any information you can provide would be appreciated?

P.S. We have ran similar tests inheriting from "Document" and "Item" content types and do not encounter the same issue with overriding inherited fields.

SharePoint Designer 2010 External Content Types Data Source Already Exists in Business Data Connecti

I used the Secure Store to create connection in SharePoint 2010 Designer External Content Types Data Source Explorer.  Later I changed some column names in the table.  I deleted the connection from Data Source Explorer and recreated it. I right clicked on the table and selected Create All Operations. When I clicked the Finish button, I got "The system definition with the same name as this data source already exists in the Business Data Connectivity Metadata Store and it refers to a different data source.  Cannot complete operation generation.  Add a connection to this data source with a different name and try again."

I re-created the Secure Store using a different name in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.  I didn't find the option to choose the connection name in SharePoint 2010 Designer. After I clicked Add Connection, I entered the Database Server and the Database Name, selected Connect with Impersonated Window Identity, entered Secure Store name, and clicked OK. The connection created with the database name as before.

Infopath 2010 - Updating the content type failed

Hi there,

Ive got an Infopath form which i have published to a forms library many many times. Recently something weird has started happening on my front-end server (i'm pretty sure our infrastructure team has done something they're not supposed to, something to do with ports and firewalls or something to the like) which caused the portal pages to be inaccessible from all machines except the server itself. This has since been resolved but i'm still getting an error when trying to publish my existing Infopath Form!

The error im getting is "Updating the content type failed."  What the ____????? A proper REASON for why this damn thing failed would have been helpful!!

Can you please please please assist me in trouble-shooting this problem? I'm at wit's end!

Ive done a couple of searches and all i come up with is timeout issues and having too many columns. But I havent added any columns (fields) and this form has always published just fine till this issue arised.

External Data Fields in a Word Template saved as a content type in a document library with multiple

I have created a Word Template for a Document Library that has an External Data Column in it of Client Name which also adds Client Address1, Client Address2, Client City, Client State, & Client Zip.  Now this works fine for a Document library with that template as the Template.dotx file.

I want to be able to make a bunch of Templates and have them all as Content Types in one Library.  When I do this I cannot get the External Data Quick Parts to work.

Anyone have any ideas?

SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow specified in Content Type retention policy not starting

I have a SharePoint Designer 2010 resuable workflow that uses the "Start Approval Process" Task Action. This workflow needs to run after a document has been declared a record. So I have a Content Type that has an Information Management Policy (IMP) attached to it. And I have 2 retention stages specified in the IMP. The first retention stage action is to run the workflow. And this Content Type is associated with the Document Library containing the records. But for some reason, the SPD workflow never gets triggered. The document has been successfully declared as a record. I also see in the document's "Compliance Details" screen, the "Scheduled Occurrence Date" is set to the proper date, but the workflow never got started on that date. I tried it with different dates that I set in the document, to ensure that the workflow runs on "Scheduled Occurence" dates such as 11/19/2010, 11/20/2010 to no avail.

What am I missing? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always.

Best regards,
Kiran K

sharepoint 2010 custom webservice, visual studio 2010, unable to get reference - content type is tex

I followed the MSDN example in how to create a custom webservice that integrates with sharepoint at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms464040.aspx

I'm able to successfully call the custom webservice it walks you through from internet explorer out of a sharepoint 2010 site using a URL such as http://vm-spproduction/sites/resource/_vti_bin/service.asmx

And, I'm able to successfully call the same custom webservice from internet explorer out of the same sharepoint 2010 server with the URL http://vm-spproduction/_vti_bin/service.asmx

In Visual Studio 2010 (running on the same hardware server as sharepoint 2010), I am able to bring up the same custom webservice in the add web reference using the advanced buttons of the add service reference dialog.  But, when the custom webservice is found, visual studio reports the following error:

The document at the url http://vm-spproduction/sites/resource/_vti_bin/service.asmx was not recognized as a known document type.
The error message from each known type may help you fix the problem:
