MSSQL 2008 SP1 install fails: A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 05, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

When attempting to install SQL Server 2008 SP1, I get the "Setup Failure" message below, along with Error code 0x84B20001.  I did read the summary*.txt files from previous installations in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log" as mentioned in the error message; the "Final result" and "Exit message" of the previous install is "Passed", so I'm not finding an answer that way.  I have also pasted the version info below.  What would you advise?

A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair during configuration for features [SQL_DTS_Full,Connectivity_Full,SQL_SSMS_Full,SDK_Full,Tools_Legacy_Full,SQL_BIDS_Full,SQL_SSMS_Adv,SQL_PowerShell_Tools_ANS,SQL_WRITER,]. In order to apply this patch package (KB968369), you must resolve any issues with the previous operation that failed. View the summary.txt log to determine why the previous operation failed.

Cannot install Sharepoint Server 2010 "A previous installation has been detected with a license type

I'm trying to upgrade to Team Foundation Server 2010 and Project Server 2010. After getting TFS 2010 and Project Server 2007 to work with WSS 3.0, I started upgrade to Project Server 2010 which requires update to Sharepoint Server 2010 Enterprise. I installed pre-requisites and run "stsadm -o preupgradecheck" which passed everything. When I tried to run the installation I get Setup Warning "A previous installation has been detected with a license type that does not match the install in progress". I thought that my trial licence for Project Server 2007 stopped this so I completely uninstalled WSS 3.0 and restarted the server but the installation still stops with Upgrade window. Any ideas? SQL Server 2008 R2 fails after Windows XP Pro SP3 install

We recently encountered an issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 failing to run after the upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP2 to SP3. This was tested and reproduced (with varying results) on more than one computer. Steps to reproduce this. On a Windows XP Pro machine with Service Pack 2 installed, install SQL Server 2008 R2. Next upgrade Windows to Service Pack 3. Now upon opening SSMS or trying to start the SQL server service you receive the following message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". In some instances reinstalling/repairing SQL Server 2008 R2 does fix the issue.  In other cases the installer crashes and you need to use msizap to clean it up before you can reinstall.  In other cases you do not receive any errors at all. After testing in multiple virtual machines it looks like the cleaner the Windows install the more likely you are to run into this issue.  On machines with most or all windows updates (prior to SP3) installed you do not necessarily even get the failure.  On machines with just Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with no additional updates you get the failure every time. Obviously the SQL Server 2008 R2 prerequisites are installed in all cases in order to be able to install SQL server to begin with. Any help with this would be appre

SQL Server 2008 Install failure - Reporting Services Rule Failures

I'm installing SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7.  I'm going through the install and on the "Installation Rules" page I have two failures: Reporting Services Catalog Database File Existance Reporting Services Catalog Temporary Database File Existance Clicking on each of the failures they both say that each file exists "Select a reporting services file-only mode installation" Clicking the "Help" button tells me to "Rename, move, or delete the files" This is the only information I can find on this exact failure.  I'm not technical enough to know exactly where these files are or what they are named.  I cannot proceed any further without correcting this issue.  I'll include some of the shorter summary log files.  I can include other detail log files if that would help. Thank you so much for any help. Easy install package vs MsSQL server 2008

Is there anything i wont be able to do if i use SQL Server Express Database from the downlod install package offered on asp.net? Ive used MSSQL server 2008 and 2005, but to be honest i think it might be overkill cause im not very familiar with those applications. I just need the database for creating websites. Will i be able to remote connect to my webbhotel host and remotely modify the database on the remote server? Now i have a mess, i have installed both MsSQL 2005 and 2008 and im not even sure wich database is created with what. I would love to just have one simple setup, but im not sure if i can manage to migrate the databases to the new computer with this easy install package. The easy install package contains: ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC Visual Studio 2010 Express Development Tool SQL Server Express DatabaseThanks for your time!

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

I attempted to install MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups from the DVD to a Win 7 workstation.  Error "This Program has known compatibility issues.  The directions are to download the MSSQL Server Service Pack.  I downloaded SP 1 and SP 2.  Neither SP will install.  The DVD install also has a run option displayed along with the Compatibility message.  I select "Run" and it appeared to install, with Start\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2008\Configuration Tools\ SQL Server Installation Center 64bit.  However, running the 64bit installation process results in no change.  My question is how to install the MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups on the Win 7 machine.  I would appreciate your thoughts.

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

The DVD install for MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups to Win 7 fails due to known compatibility issues.  I asked for help in the Getting Started with SQL Server Forum and followed a recommendation to slipstream installation with SP1. I followed the procedures at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joaol/archive/2009/03/20/how-to-install-sql-server-2008-with-sp1-built-in-slipstream-installation.aspx I then ran Setup.exe from the C:\SQLServer2008 folder.  It failed with the following .Net Framework error.  (I previously installed .Net Framework Version 4 which is required by the application needing SQL Server.)  Thanks for help. Microsoft.NET Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup fails to install properly

Hello, I am not able to install 2008 R2 on my laptop. I have 2005 and 2008 installed previously. It says in one of the attached screenshots that the OLAP service cannot be started. I have attached the errors in screenshots and also my summary log, please advise thank you.

Edit: I am able to manually startup the SQL 2008 R2 service, and can login as "sa" without a password... but strangely I did select mix mode authentication and did supply a password during the installation wizard too..

Silent install of SQL Server 2005 fails when SQL Server 2008 is installed

We currently install SQL Server 2005 Express silently during our installation, using the following switches

/qn ADDLOCAL=all REBOOT=ReallySuppress DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=2 SQLAUTOSTART=1 SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=123

We also attach a 2005-created database immediately after using the following command line (^ is a path concat operator in Installshield):

sqlcmd.exe -S .\\SQLEXPRESS -E -i \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SetupUapDB.sql\" -vmdfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg.mdf\" -vldfpath=\"" + svConfigPath ^ "UapCfg_log.ldf\" -o \"" + svConfigPath ^ "SqlCreateDB.txt\" -e

Note that we do not specify an instance name.  We ran into a situation where someone had installed SQL Server 2008 on a box using a default instance name and our install then failed.  I am considering 2 possible fixes, and have questions for both.

Fix #1: Specify an instance name.  Ideally this would install SQL Server 2005 Express side by side with SQL Server 2008, create a unique instance name and we'd be good to go right?  If yes, what is the accepted convention for specifying instance names?

Fix #2: Not sure if this is possible.  Can we detect if SQL Server 2008 is on the box, and if yes, apply our 2005 database to it instead?  In this case (tell me

Hi,

The validation tests in the SQL 2008R2 cluster installation (running Windows 2008 R2) fails with the following error. The cluster has one root mount point with multiple mount points :
