Trouble installing SSAS 2008 R2

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 05, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello all. I am installing SQL 2008 R2 SSAS on a Win XP Pro machine. All other components of SQL 2008 R2 installed just fine, but SSAS is giving me errors when trying to start the service. Error: Provider failure 0x80041004

It tells me to look in the Event log for details, but I don't see any entries in the logs that would apply.

What am I missing, What is going wrong? Where can I look for help?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Trouble installing SSRS 2008 R2, XP Pro SP3, can't access Web Service or Report Manager URLs

I found a great thread by Uday titled "SQL 2008 Reporting Services Win XP SP2" and worked through it, but I am still stumped.

I am using port 8080 cause this was default.  I tried changeing to 80, but it didn't help, so changed back.  IIS is using port 80 and is currently stopped.

I see both databases in SQL Server and can query while logged in as Account that is used for the service account.  SSRS is running.

URL reservations look good in the rsreportserver.config file.  In Native mode.

While in RS Config Manger I can test database connection and it is good.  When I click the webservice URL or the Report Manger URL in the Config Manager I get errors "Web site can not be found" and "Website can not display page"  I just upgraded to IE 8.  Can't figure out what to do next.

When I use httpcfg.exe I see a URL for http://+:8080/ReportServer/   and http://+:80/Reports/.  This could be the problem.  How can I chages seconfd to port 8080?

Any help would be appreciated.

Installing both VS Pro 2008 and VWD2008

I work at an educational institution and in our computing labs we have Visual Studio Professional 2008 installed already. One of our academics has requested me to install Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition as they think it's easier for their beginner students to learn, but I've noticed it wants to install it in the same folder as our Visual Studio Professional install.

Can both be installed without the limited VWD interfering with the Professional version?

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

Was installing SQL 2008 Enterprise last night via RDP. When I came in this morning, I was disconnect

When I opened a connection, the old connection was gone, perhaps a reboot? I am able to connect to the instance from the server and create a table  and query a DB.  I am however unable to connect to the Instance from my 2005 client. How can I tell the install was successful? Looking in the event logs and not seeing anything around the time it would have completed. Additionally: I checked and Remote connections is enabled. TCP and Pipes are enabled. SQL Browser is stopped, when attempt to access to start that I get an error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices asssociated with it [0X80070422] I can't telnet into 1433 on the server.. might be firewall. Do I really need to open that manually? My client is SQL 2005, I believe I've connect to sql 2008 DBs. Should I upgrade the client on my client? I attempted to stop and start the instance. when I started it I got this mess: Server stack trace:    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.FindObjectExplorerFrame()    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.GetObjectExplorer(Boolean activateWindow)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.ShowError(Exception e)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.

BootstrapExtension.ExecuteWorkflowAction error while installing SQL Server 2008 R2

After installing Visual Studio 2010, I found that I could no longer open SQL Management Studio.  I could not even uninstall them because the uninstall was dying.   So I manually removed sql server from my system and now I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

Shared dataset in SSRS 2008 R2 running on SSAS 2005

I am trying to create a report in SSRS 2008 R2 using SSAS 2005 as a datasource. My dataset has a date parameter. When I create an embedded dataset in my report everything works fine, but when I create a shared dataset with the exact same mdx query, I get the following error: An error occurred during local report processing. The definition of the report 'xxxx' is invalid. The Value expression for the report parameter 'DateCalendarHierarchy' contains an error: [BC30034] Bracketed identifier is missing closing ']'. Does anybody have any ideas? Is this a bug? Thanks, Louis

AdomdDataAdapter.Fill returns memory error when querying an SSAS Cube(2008)

For certain SQL's I will get the following error when calling the Fill method on an AdomdDataAdapter object. "Memory error: While attempting to store a string, a string was found that was larger than the page size selected. The operation cannot be completed."   Snippet of Code: DataSet ds1 = new DataSet(); AdomdCommand acmd1 = cn1.CreateCommand(); acmd1.CommandText = "SELECT ..."; AdomdDataAdapter ad1 = new AdomdDataAdapter(acmd1); ad1.Fill(ds1);   Now when we run this query in Ms Sql Studio we don't get any errors but the query returns 1 row with over 40,000 columns. I'm guessing the # of columns might be an issue but not sure.   When doing a Google search it appears that this problem was found in the 2005 and fixed in that version. Have any of you come across this problem?

SSAS 2008 - Memory Error

During our unit and load testing of the SSAS database using VSTST 2010 Ultimate; we are getting a memory error with some of our MDX queries (below).  Futher analysis showed: The adomdDataAdapter "Fill" command is our error point The error is occuring when the result data set has getter than 16,384 Columns; actual returned column count is 41,339 columns - business requirement does not let us change this query at this time. The MDX query works fine in MS Excel 2007 The MDX Query works fine in MS SQL Studio 2008 How can we resolve the unit test data set with such a large column count? Memory error: While attempting to store a string, a string was found that was larger than the page size selected. The operation cannot be completed. Excel 2007 Pivot table OLAP- SSAS 2008 Error

Hi, I do have a strange issue with Excel 2007 pivot table report; the data source is SSAS 2008 cube. When refresh the excel 2007 report data using the 'Refresh All' or 'Refresh' button available under the Data menu, the below error is thrown. "The expression contains a function that cannot operate on a set with more than 4,294,967,296 tuples." After some analysis, the report works well on the below workaround, 1. Remove all the calculated measures from report (3 measures in this scenario) 2. Remove one row label (dimension attribute) from report But the measures, attributes are valid one from cube and it is required fields in the report. So, understand that removing few items is not at all a solution. The below workaround also works. 1. Check the 'Defer Layout Update' option from the Pivot Table Field List window. 2. Click on the Update button After that Unchecked the 'Defer Layout Update' option and apply the filter, etc in the report. The report works very well. But every time, we need to use the above work around after open the excel report. I have NO clue on this issue. Please help to resolve this issue. Thanks, Jey

Cube Writeback SQL Server 2008 R2 (SSAS, write back)

CUBE WRITE BACK in SQL SERVER 2008 R2 Did anybody get the SSAS write back functionality to work against a decent sized datawarehouse? I'm not asking about a little demo but a significant sized footprint e.g. 14M Rows measures, 6-8 wired Dimensions with 8-10 attributes each. I setup a test server using a Dell XEON ( 2x4core) with 48 GB RAM hardware and the latest Sql Server 2008 R2 release. I used the What-If scenario in Excel 2010 and modified a higher level, hoping SSAS would push the values down. After about 15 minutes and after having used 48 GB memory (on average 5% CPU) Excel throw an error - short on memory - and stopped the action. I found the same behavior in Sql server 2005 and 2008 and was hoping this would work now but apparently not so. Here are my questions: Is anybody using this at all? how can one calculated (roughtly) how much memory is requiered? is there any paper that describes best practise? Thanks for any help in advance, Dirk
