I originally had posted this in response to a question in the General Q&A forum but (1) think that this is a better place to have this discussion and (2) hope that it will gets some views here.
In debugging why I can't enable Workflow Visualization using SharePoint Designer 2010 I came across the error in my Central Admin
"The Unattended Service Account Application ID is not specified or has invalid value" -- Failing Service -- VisioGraphicsService
After clicking the link in the error description (which takes you to the wrong place BTW) I was pointed to this tech net article as the place to find the solution (http://tinyurl.com/32tjyl6). IMO I don't
think that providing just this link is going to help most people solve the problem directly. If you follow that link there is a lot of reading to do just to figure out what is going wrong, let alone to fix the problem.
From all the research that I have done (I think that) you have to do the following steps:
- Plan a Secure Store Service (http://tinyurl.com/2wa8vff)
- Provision a Secure Store Service (http://tinyurl.com/38phsgg)
- Create a Target App
