pulling a website into Visual Studio

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 05, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have a friend that needs some new development on his company website. So, I got the ftp credentials and pulled the site down to my computer. In Visual Studio I did "create project from website". Here's the problem. When I try to run the site I get errors saying that I am missing several pages throughout the site. I can only presume that on some occassions he compiled the pages and copied the DLLs to the server while on others he just copied the codebehind pages up to the server. When I look at the files that were pulled into the project there are several .cs pages while some .cs pages are missing. There are DLLs in the bin folder that I assume hold some of the compiled codebehinds. What can I do about getting this site to run? Thanks.

Exclude Folder from Website in Visual Studio

For projects such as forms apps and class libraries you can exclude folders which reside in the directory from the project. That menu option does not seem to exist when you create a website in VS 2005, is there any way to do it?

how to convert web application to website in visual studio 2008

Dear all,                      I have to integrate web application into website. What are the changes i have to do. I need information very urgently. can any one help here.

Visual studio converting from website to web application

I have followed the MSDN instructions in converting an VS 2008 Website project into a VS 2008 Web application project. I am running across the following two issues, let me know if anybody has any suggestions:1) When using the "Convert to Web Application" option, it shows an error "Generation of designer file failed. Unknown server tag XXXX"Most of the server controls are registered in web.config with:<add tagPrefix="UControls" namespace="APP_NAME.UI.WebApp.Utils" assembly="APP_NAME.UI.WebApp"/>How can I make the web application converter recognize the web.config settings?2) After the convertion above, when I try to compile the project I get errors of the form "Name 'CETest' Is not decaled". These are classes from an external library in the code behind files. The code behind files on the old website did not use "Imports" but again relied on web.config "<add namespace="APP_NAME.Business.Entities"/>"Is it possible to not use imports in the code behind file for web application ilike n the website project? Or is there other alternatives? Or will this be fixed if #1 is fixed?Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can't login to website from Visual Studio 2010

I created a local copy of my website, so I could work on it in Visual Studio 2010. I am using a SQL membership provider that is running on discountAsp.net's SQL Server 2008 R2. The website works fine online, but when I run the website from Visual Studio, I can't log in. It's strange because if I open up my website in Visual Studio I can still use my admin pages to add and delete users, view users info, change passwords, etc., but I just can't get authenticated. This just makes it hard to test my pages that are restricted to certain users and roles.

Anybody know what this might be? Thanks in advance.

ASP.NET 4 and Visual Studio 2010 Web Development Beta 2 Overview

Many exciting changes for ASP.NET are coming in the .NET Framework version 4. This document gives an overview of many of the new features that are included in the Beta 2 release of the .NET Framework 4 and of Visual Studio 2010.

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2

This is a big deal. This isn't ".NET 3.6" - there are a lot of improvements of .NET 4, and it's not just "pile on a bunch of features so you get overwhelmed." I've been working with and talking to many of the teams involved and even though it's a cheesy thing to say, this is a really customer-focused release.

ASP 4 - Whirlwind Tour around .NET 4 (and Visual Studio 2010) Beta 1

There's a lot of stuff that's new and added in .NET 4, but not in that "overwhelming-I-need-to-relearn-everything" way. More in that, "oh, this is way easier/simpler now" way. Like, moving data around with ADO.NET DataServices is easy, binding with client templates is easy, there's F# if you need it, the "dynamic" keyword if you need it, Silverlight's already installed, oh, and the parallel stuff will freak you out, but in a good way.

Short Overview of SharePoint Features in Visual Studio 2010

As you probably know, Visual Studio 2010 was announced earlier this week and it contains a lot of cool features and project templates for SharePoint developers. Below is a short overview for some of the SharePoint development related features and project templates.

Visual Studio Add-In for Web Parts Generation

This article will introduce you to a new Visual Studio 2005/2008 add-in that can be used for Web Parts generation based on a prepared ASCX control/template. The add-in should allow Web Part developers to easily make Web Parts using the Visual Studio HTML designer. It should save you a lot of time and make Web Part development an enjoying experience even for beginners.

This article is written in the form of a step-by-step tutorial. It will give beginners a chance to successfully make, deploy, and try their first Web Parts, and will save some time for advanced users as you can always run into challenges when working with SharePoint.

Download and Share Visual Studio Color Schemes

The good news is that Visual Studio allows you to completely customize the editor background and text colors to whatever you want - allowing you to tweak them to create the experience that is "just right" for your eyes and personality. You can then optionally export/import your color scheme preferences to an XML file via the Tools->Import and Export Settings menu command.
