What are the other ways of concatenating several rows aside from UDF method?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 05, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I am actually creating a program that would concatenate rows into one. I made a UDF to do the work but the downside is that, when the records grow in number, the program is losing its speed.

Can I create a subquery instead of the UDF?

Help please...

Thank you!

Concatenating several rows data into one field Visual Studio 2008

Below is my a example of my table and data.  I am using Visual Studio 2008.  I need to concatenate field customer_report with like field ‘number’.  I added a new SQLDataSource and put the query below into it.

Select Main.number,

       Left(Main.CustomerNotes,Len(Main.CustomerNotes)-1) As "CustomerNotes"

From(Select distinct PS2.number,

           (Select PS1.customer_report + ',' AS [text()]

Concatenating column values for multiple rows

I know this question has been asked many times. I am just trying to verify that my solution is correct.

I need to concatenate a column values with the rows being ordered on another column.

I initially used the FOR XML PATH clause for the purpose, and it worked wonders, until I had XML entities (&, < etc) in my data, and FOR XML PATH encoded those. After some searching on experts-exchange, I came up with the following code for myself:

	SET @freeFieldXml = '';
	SELECT @freeFieldXml = @freeFieldXml + '/' + Value FROM @fields ORDER BY CodeType;
	SET @freeFieldXml = STUFF(@freeFieldXml, 1, 1, '');

In my testing, the above code worked perfectly. I just want to confirm that the data would always be sorted on the desired column and the concatenated string would actually have the field values sorted by that column.

I always think tomorrow will have more time than today. And every today seems to pass-by

Revised Question XML Value Method Return Multiple Rows

How to access multiple header rows of the gridview in Render method

I have extended a gridview to add an additional header with following two hyperlink controls "Select All" and "Clear All". These will operate on checkboxes in the data rows of the grid. I hide the column headers as I only want to show one column with checkboxes and "Select/Clear All" links. Everything is working as expected.

Now, I wanted to add a scrollbar to my grid control, I did add the scroll bar using div but what it does is, it includes the "Select All and Clear All" links aswell. I only need to add the scrollbar to datarows and not to the header.

I am trying to extend my control to include hte scrollbar by adding div during Render function. But how will I determine or loop through header rows? How will i get the header row with hyperlinks that I created above?? In Render if I do this.HeaderRow, it gets the original column header and not the custom header. Please help!!!

Best method for iterating through DB rows and updating

I'm hoping to get some insight on best practices. I thought it would be easy to find existing info in various forums but so far haven't found what I need.

I have a project in which I need to process all the rows of data in a large dataset one by one. The dataset is too large to load the whole thing into memory. I'm using C# and MySQL to do this. The challenge is that I need to iterate through the records, load the data from each record into some local variables, calculate some stuff, and then update the record in the db. For the most part I'm populating empty columns in the record although I do occassionally change existing values.

Pseudocode would look something like this:

Connect to DB

Load table (using a memory-friendly fetch size)

Foreach record

     Calculate the missing columns

     Update the row

This code was originally written in Java and I was able to use the updateRow() method of the JDBC's ResultSet class. From what I've learned of ADO so far, it looks like there is no equivalent functionality.

Because the datasets are large, performance is a consideration.

Six easy ways to customize your site using Web Parts in SharePoint

Becoming familiar with Web Part customization techniques gives you a range of page-customization choices. For example, you can customize your site's home page so that it displays the specific information that your team needs. You can rearrange the list items on the home page, add lists, and even change the images on the home page. As you become more familiar with Web Part Page customization techniques, you can build interactive Web Part Pages that makes the data in lists more dynamic and useful, and you can add new Web Parts that provide access to external data and Web services.

Thinking about new C# method prototypes: object as dictionary

I recently had to write a small Flickr API. I know many .Net API for Flickr already exist but I needed one for a Silverlight application. Whatever, it's only about building some querystrings so I did it by myself. It's been an opportunity to think again about a classical question: how to pass parameters to a method ?

Imagine you have a generic method to call some Flickr functions.

Adding Dynamic Rows in ASP.NET GridView Control with TextBoxes and with Delete functionality

In my previous examples, I have demonstrated on how to add dynamic rows in GridView control with TextBoxes and how to save the values into the database. Now, seems that most of the developers are asking if how to add a delete functionality with it. So in this example, I'm going to show on how to delete a certain row in the dynamic GridView with TextBoxes.

jQuery: Highlight Gridview Rows with Checkbox

Im learning and experimenting with jQuery and ASP.NET. Below is a simple solution I created to highlight rows in a gridview by clicking on a checkbox next to the row.

Gridview setup:

Highlighting Rows with TextBox OnFocus

In another article I explained that how you can make the rows of the GridView control clickable and highlight them when they are clicked. In this article I will explain that how you can highlight the GridView rows when you focus on the TextBox which is contained inside the GridView control.

jQuery: Highlight Gridview Rows with Checkbox

Im learning and experimenting with jQuery and ASP.NET. Below is a simple solution I created to highlight rows in a gridview by clicking on a checkbox next to the row.

jQuery: Styling DropDownList Alternating Items (Rows)

In the following example, I will show how you can style any asp:dropdownlist very easily.

The example demonstrates how you can change alternating row items background color, using the fadeTo() to add a nice touch in the dropdownlist. You can change alt rows with a couple lines.

MS SQL Server: Search All Tables, Columns & Rows For Data or Keyword Query

If you need to search your entire database for specific data, this query will come in handy.

So when a client needs a custom report or some sort of custom development using Great Plains, most of the time I will have to track down the data in the system by running this query and find the table(s) it is in.

How to format and update GridView and DataGrid rows using JQuery

The behavior described in this question is as expected. When you set text of a cell in grid, it directly affects HTML that is going to be rendered. When you set text value of a cell, it means that you are setting innerText of the cell. The column that GridView creates for command fields (Edit, Delete and Select) are a (anchor) or button elements. So you can see what will happen if you set text value in that cell. It will wipe out those link or button controls and replace them with simple text string.

Using jQuery to Filter Table Rows

The project is using the .net GridView control, so I had limited control over the output HTML code. Still, I think this code can work for most tables. One thing to notice: you should use the class "filterable" on your table or on one of its parents for the code to work.
First, we need a text box:

Insert Rows with a GridView

In ASP.NET version 1.x, I used the footer on the DataGrid control to insert new rows by placing a series of TextBox, DropDownLists, CheckBoxes etc. controls on it and then handling a save button. This also works with the GridView in version 2.0 but with one major exception: if your data source is empty, the GridView will hide your footer (and header) and only display the EmptyDataText.

Problem to group radio button across gridview rows

In general no one can easily group or make a single selection from radio button list inside gridview rows. There are a lot of way to make a single or unique selection from list. Here i want to share how i can address this problem in the most easiest way. Googling the problem most of the cases i saw the grouping in horizontal way. Thats why i tried to group the radio buttons in vertical manner. Let i have a requirement like below:
ASP.NetWindows Application  .NET Framework  C#  VB.Net  ADO.Net
Sql Server  SharePoint  Silverlight  Others  All
