if ssis package writes to excel file that might be open by a user

I have written a package that writes to an excel file to a network folder. Eventually this package will run as a job. What is the best way to handle the situation where someone opens the file or inadvertantly leaving it open while the package is running and and stop the package.? No one needs to modify or write anything to this file after it is finished

SSIS "Save copy of Package.dtsx as" is not available

Hello,I had previously upgraded my Visual Studios to 2008 Pro, and have just upgraded to SQL Management Studio 2008.  I can create/edit/upgrade packages using 2008, but when I attempt to put them on the server there is no File > "Save copy of Package.dtsx as" option available.  The only options are Save, Save as, and Save All.  Any ideas?

SSIS Save Package in Package Store - Error

I'm brand new to SSIS, so please bear with my limited knowledge and experience. I'm working through a tutorial found at http://accelebrate.com/sql_training/ssis_2008_tutorial.htm, and I can't save my package in the package store. Here's the error I get:

The storage location for the folder "File System\" cannot be accessed. (Microsoft Visual Studio)

Program Location:

   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application.ExistsOnDtsServer(String sPackagePath, String sServerName)

   at Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Controls.PackageLocationControl.SavePackage(Package package)

   at Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Design.Controls.PackageSaveCopyForm.PackageSaveCopyForm_FormClosing(Object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e)

All I'm trying to do is save the package in the package store before I execute it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

SSIS -2008 R2 - ODBC Connection error - Password does not save

Please know that I am new to SSIS 2008 and XML. Have a package I am trying to deploy. Am on a HV 64 Bit environment SQL Server 2K8 R2. Have an ODBC connection to our HBOC system as a data source. As always package runs in test environment and not in prod.  I need a bit of insight into the what and why's of the configuation file and how to change out the XML.

Main issue is the password not saving and how to handle the ODBC side of things. I appreciate any help in this matter as I have searched with no real understanding of XML and best practices of creating the Congif file.

Can I Describe a Flat File Source to Save SSIS User Some Effort

I'm a complete SSIS beginner.  I suspect the answer to my question is out there I just don't know enough to construct the search that would find it.

I'm writing a program to generate fixed width format text files from proprietary databases for use as Flat File Sources in SSIS packages.  I know I can provide a header row containing column names.  But I have a lot more information about the file (obviously!).  I know how many columns there are, what the width of each column is, what the type of each column is, etc.

Is there some way I can record the information I have so that the SSIS user consuming my file doesn't have to input all that information through the Import and Export Wizard?

For example, if I were generating these files for use with the BCP utility I could create a Format File to describe the structure of each field in my data file.  Is there some similar capability in SSIS or do the consumers of my data files have to input InputColumnWidth, Data Type etc. through the Advanced editor dialog box?

Working with CodePlex. How to save password for project?

I want to make public one small project on CodePlex. Everybody knows that you can work with CodePlex like with TFS client and with SVN client as well. But really I can't work with it from SVN client. When I tried to add some binary file (it was dll) I got the error "Server sent unexpected return value (200 OK) in response to PUT request for .". How to solve this problem I don't know, I found thread at CodePlex's discussions Can't commit binary files using TortoiseSVN, but last message was at past year. Ok, I'm working with TFS at work, so for me it will be not a problem connect to CodePlex with TFS. But there are some distressing case, Visual Studio always ask credentials at every new connection to project. And I didn't find a checkbox "Save credentials". But I found the method. Read more...

Execute Package Task password issue

I have a parent and child package. Both are stored on the file system and both are password protected. My problem is that when I call the child package from the parent using execute package task, I get prompted for the child package's password. Now the PackagePassword property of the Execute Package Task is supposed to take care of that. But for some reason the password stored in the Execute Package Task is not getting passed to the child package.  I've re-entered the PackPassword property several times, but it did not help.  I even tried loading the password from a config file, but that did not make any difference.  Can anyone help?

SSIS Package Transaction locks entire table

Hello, I have SSIS package that using transactions and working as expected. But this locks all the tables involved in the data flow that are get inserted/loaded. If I query those tables during package execution the query waits till SSIS releases the lock. But I can still query those tables using NOLOCK hint. Is this possible SSIS will lock only the rows that it insert/update/delete etc? So that other user can still use that table or another instance of same SSIS Package can load data into those tables? My Package: In the package level I have TransactionOption = Required. The Sequence (Data Flow is inside this sequence) TransactionOption = Supported. I had some issue in my package that I posted here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/dfb5a8b9-d43c-452b-bb21-d6aea192fc97 and also resolved. Now I descovered this issue and trying to resolve. Thanks, Prabhat

SSIS package Scheduled Job Not Running

I'm not sure which way to research this issue.. I have an SSIS package that we can run just fine manually. But, when we put it into a scheduled job, it won't run. The package is on the same system as the SQL Server (2005), but it does call for updates from tables on another SQL Server (2000) on another domain (trusted). So, I'm thinking this might be a permissions / security issue, but not sure where to start... The package ProtectionLevel is "don't save sensitive", but that didn't help. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. jill
