Can I use a DetailsView control to insert and update with RIA services?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I'm struggling with trying to use RIA services from an ASP.NET web site.

I created a new web site, added an entity framework model, then added a RIA service that uses that model. I used the DomainDataSource control to bind the ASP.NET controls to the RIA service.

I have a GridView that shows items from the database (via RIA and the entity framework model underneath it), and can see the items fine. I added a DetailsView as a pop-up, as shown in http://mattberseth.com/blog/2007/07/modalpopupextender_example_for.html and http://mattberseth.com/blog/2008/04/masterdetail_with_the_gridview.html. When I click the "edit" link in a row in the GridView, the DetailsView shows with the right data, but clicking the "save" link doesn't actually update the database.

Furthermore, I can't work out how to add new items this way, as when I try and use the DetailsView to add a new item, nothing is sent to the database.

Anyone any ideas how this can be done?

How do I control using ListView when to show the Update/Delete/Insert buttons and when not?

It should be simple, but I didn't found yet how to do it.

There is only one user (Admin with user name and passowrd, he has a cookie so I know when he is watching the page) I would like to show him the Update/Delete/Insert button options in my ListView, but to the other users I don't want them to be able doing this kind of things, So it should be hidden from them.

How I am doing it in C# code?

How to perform insert, update, delete and select rows in ASP.NET gridview control using stored proce

In this article, we will explore how to add, update, delete and select a record from sql server database using gridview control in a simple way. I'm using visual studio 2010 and sql server 2008 for this sample.

SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() returns -1 when doing Insert / Update / Delete

Sometimes you end up with a return value of -1 when using the SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method.

Why is that?

Well, the ExecuteNonQuery method is there for statements for changing data, ie. DELETE / UPDATE /INSERT, and the returned value are the number of rows affected by that statement.

When checking the documentation we can see that there are some conditions that return -1.

For UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements, the return value is the number of rows affected by the command.

When a trigger exists on a table being inserted or updated, the return value includes the number of rows affected by both the insert or update operation and the number of

rows affected by the trigger or triggers. For all other types of statements, the return value is -1. If a rollback occurs, the return value is also -1.

Provisioning: Use Web Services Provisioning to Control Access, Usage, and Billing on Your Site

Building Web Services to provide enterprise-level solutions is only the first step. You need to take care of the infrastructure aspects of your solution as well, including provisioning, billing, security, and reporting. In this article, the author uses the .NET Framework and SQL Server 2000 to design a provisioning system that will take care of all these housekeeping tasks. He discusses the general requirements of a Web Service provisioning system, walks through the implementation, and then outlines various scenarios for putting this system to work.

Accordion Control with Panel...Add an Update Panel?

I have an accordion control in my web site.  And in one of the panels, I have a drop down list box where, when the user selects an item, it updates the labels right below the ddlistbox.  I have it so that it maintains the scroll position when the ddlistbox has an autopostback, but it's very obvious that the whole page posts back.

My question is, can I/should I just enclose the ddlistbox and the labels (and a couple of text boxes) in an AJAX update panel?  I already have a ToolScriptManager (because of the accordion control), so I don't need to have another script manager, right?  I can just put the update panel (with the other controls inside of it) right in the accordion panel, right?  Then when the ddlistbox posts back it won't have the delay of the whole page posting back?  And it'll still execute the event handler for the listbox selection change?

Does this sound right?  I'm just looking to make the post back "invisible", and I would like to do a partial postback of just these few controls.

Thanks in advance! :)

Get value of a label control inside the DetailsView

Hi everyone, I have a databound label control (i.e. Label 3) inside an Item Template that's in a DetailsView control. I just need to get the value of those label and compare it to some string. I tried several ways (i.e. Find control, DetailsView.Row) but nothing seems to work. I don't know if I'm using the FindControl methos correctly or if I need to access the Row first and do the findcontrol method.  Protected Sub DetailsView4_DataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles DetailsView4.DataBound 'If (DetailsView4.Rows(2).Cells(1).ToString = "Regular") Then 'Label3.ForeColor = Drawing.Color.Azure 'End If 'Dim StatusQualifierContainer As Label 'Dim S As String 'StatusQualifierContainer = DetailsView4.FindControl(Label3.Text) 'S = StatusQualifierContainer.Text 'If S = "Regular" Then 'Label5.ForeColor = Drawing.Color.Aqua 'End If 'Dim C As Label = DetailsView4.FindControl("Label3") 'If C.Text = "Regular" Then 'Label3.ForeColor = Drawing.Color.DarkBlue 'End If 'Dim headerRow As DetailsViewRow = DetailsView4.HeaderRow 'Dim lblText As Label = CType(headerRow.FindControl("Label3"), Label)

Use update progress control to change image control imageurl

UPDATE: Apologies for the previous formatting error - hopefully the post is now more readable... Hi I have a button with an image control next to it. Before the button is clicked, the image control "ConfirmedStatusImage" shows a "cancel.png" image. When the button has been clicked (and some other code successfully executed), then I change the imageurl for the "theConfirmedStatusImage" to show a "ok.png" image. Quite a bit of time can often pass between clicking the button and the associated code executing, so I have an ajax update progress control that shows a "bluespinner.gif" image while the page is updating after the button click. At the moment, the update progress updating image appears next to the "ConfirmedStatusImage" control. However, I would like to change things so that when the update progress starts, the imageurl of "ConfirmedStatusImage" changes from "cancel.png" to the update progress image (i.e., the "bluespinner.gif"). Then, when the update is complete, then the image should change to the "ok.png" image. My question is: how can I achieve this? As far as I can tell, the update progress control does not have any events that I can hook into. Also, placing the "ConfirmedStatusImage" inside the ProgressTemplate would not work either, as this only displays

Allow or deny roles to update, insert and delete records.

Hello, I have two roles "Admin" and "Basic". I also have a listview on the web page. My goal is that to make "Admin" role has the highest privilege to deal with records such as "insert", "update" and "delete". For the role "Basic", it only can update the records. Is there any sample code for that? Thanks.

update/insert parent child at the same time

Hi Al, Is there a way to create a contact form that takes the name. address and other info for the master record; Then, somehow, on the same page, allow the user to enter multiple contact info as chid records (i.e. phone, email, etc.) All this using the Objec DataSource or SQL DataSource (which ever is easy) and doesn't require writing too much code. Any reference material welcomed. Thanks, rod.

Possible to insert & update in formview?

I have a formview where DefaultMode="Insert". Underneath, I have a gridview that displays the information from the inserts. Is there a way to update the information as well as insert? Maybe there is a better way to do what I'm trying to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Insert and Edit Pages with Web User Control Template for another table

Hi, I have an Address template(web user control) which holds the fields of the Address table.  The Address template is embedded in the School Insert Page.  I want to insert a new school together with its address(which means I have to insert a record into the address table).  Can you let me know how I can pass the newly generated addressId to update school table?  Also, how can I associate the Address.cs in the App_Code with the Address template?  I want it to be able to scaffold columns which needs to be hidden from user in the address table.  When I click on Insert School, the Address template shows in "insert" mode, I just need to link the two together. Thanks for your help! CC

Concurrent INSERT and UPDATE

I created a table with the following columns in SQL server 2008 express version,   create table action (id int identity , comment varchar(256), description varchar(max), opendate date, closedate date) I was trying to verify whether inserts will slow down once the table has large number of records. Hence i started inserting in loop (30 times) 10000 records. This was done using Microsoft jdbc driver ver 4.0. The time taken was almost in the range 8-10 seconds. In between i also tried to update the 'description' column for all the rows from sql client window. This affected the insert operations and it took 31 seconds for inserting one set of 10,000 rows. Please suggest how to handle such scenarios. Is the slowness because of the entire table update?
