Upgrade mssql2008 cluster to mssql2008 R2

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 04, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello to all,

I have a 2 node active cluster mssql 2008 and I need to upgrade to R2.

I have never done this before.

Can anyone please point me to documentation or tell me the steps involved ?

Do I upgrage the cluster ? then the instance, then the databases or is it one upgrade at the cluster level ?

We have reporting services also installed.

thank you.

Upgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008 in Cluster--Recomendations

Hi all I have   6 cluster environments and 10 standalone servers and mix  of  32 bit  64 bit. As I know In place Upgrade not possible SQL2k 32 bit to SQL2008 64 bit. What I want to know is……… 1. If I purchase SQL Server 2008 Ent edition that will have both 64 bit and 32 bit edition or I have purchase separately ? 2. How to do side by side upgrade in Cluster environment I mean I can’t ask my company to provide other cluster to do side by side upgrade. If I do installation in same cluster machines, I can’t provide same Instance name for SQL Server 2008 Instance.hance it is very difficulty for application connectivity Please some body provides me best approach to drive in Upgrade from SQL2k to SQL2008. Upgrading SQL2008 Cluster Active/Active Failing to upgrade 2nd node

I upgraded the 1st node of a SQL2008 Cluster on Windows 2003 sp2, and this was after correcting a SQL2008 Cluster install by uninstalling and removing a node.   It was stable when I began the R2 install.  The first node went as planned, but it will not move past the setup phase where it does the install of the setup files, and the log shows this:

Running Action: PostMsiTimingConfigAction
2010-11-04 09:52:52 Slp: The object state property 'workflow' is null/empty.
2010-11-04 09:52:52 Slp: Error: Action "PostMsiTimingConfigAction" failed during execution.
2010-11-04 09:52:52 Slp: Completed Action: PostMsiTimingConfigAction, returned False

I had previously tried to install R2 which led to some corruption and required me to correct the 2008 install.  Following the instructions here :

replication problem in MSSQL2008

Exprets,

I have a two servers both of them have installed SQL Server 2008 Enterprise, also each of them have DB called MCG, same amount of data and tables.

Which type of replication is better to use and how to setup it.

I tried to create transcation replication,

but when it starts it creates on second server all tables again (creates some kind of *.pre and *.sch files)  and tries to populate data that already exists there.

After creating those tables again and initialize populating data from 1st to 2nd and gives an error.

I need to replicate data is only changed on first server  and this changes should immediately appear on second server.

Your help is really appreciated.

Thanks

SQL 2005 Standard to Enterprise Edition upgrade on existing three-node cluster

Current set-up: three node cluster running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 with two instances of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP2.

Virtual node 1: Standard Edition, default instance, Database Engine only

Virtual node 2: Standard Edition, named instance, Database Engine, Analysis Services and Integration Services

Physical node A: Prefered node for virtual node 1

Physical node B: Failover node for both virtual node 1 and 2 (thus having two installations of Standard Edition)

Physical node C: Prefered node for virtual node 2

We started off with this set-up because there was no need for Enterprise features, and SQL 2005 supports failover clustering with two nodes in Standard Edition. Saved a bundle of cash, so everybody's happy. Now we need to run a solution on virtual node 2 that requires Enterprise features in Analysis and Integration Services, so an edition upgrade is required on virtual node 2. I have done some research and found several edition upgrade examples, but none that match the above scenario. We are running production on these machines, so I can't risk experimenting with command line options, I have to be right the first time.

Is it possible to mix two editions of SQL Server 2005 in one cluster? Can I upgrade virtual node 2 to Enterprise but leave virtual node 1 at

Sql Cluster Upgrade to 2008 R2

I am testing the upgrade process of SQL Server 2008 to 2008 R2 in a Windows Server 2008 Clustering environment.

After upgrading the Shared Components in the passive node, I was unable to fail over SQL Server.  The error I got was: The SQL Server (<InstanceName>) service terminated with service-specific error 17058 (0x42A2).

After much digging without success, I proceeded to upgrade SQL Server to 2008 R2 on the passive node.  After the upgrade, moving SQL Server to the passive node returned the following:

The action 'Move to node <NodeB>' did not complete.  An error occurred moving the clustered service or application 'SQL Server (<InstanceName>)'.  the operation failed because either the specified cluster node is not the owner of the group, or the node is not a possible owner of the group.

All shared resources have both nodes as possible owners, and failover works just fine before the upgra

Upgrade SQL Server 2008 SP1 Fail Over Cluster to SQL Server 2008 R2...

Hi All,

I have Two Windows Server 2008 SP1 Servers installed in a Fail over Cluster mode. SOL Server 2008 SP1 is running in the Fail Over Cluster in ACTIVE / PASSIVE Mode. Now I need to upgrade the SOL server 2008 SP1 to R2. How do I proceed for that? Please help me to proceed.

Thanks in Advance.

Best Way to Upgrade Using Web Setup Project

Hi there,

I am using VS2005.

I don't have much experience with web setup projects, but I now need to create a decent windows installer in order to allow customers to install one of our web applications. I have created a simple web setup project and it works fine, but not when it comes to upgrades of the application.

If for instance I install version 1.0 on a machine, and then later I try to install version 2.0, I don't seem to have the control that I would like... I can specify in the web setup project that the installer must enforce an uninstall of previous version, but then all application files and logs are uninstalled as well. If I let the application just install itself over the older version, it seems to leave some old DLL's there - it then causes issues in the application because DLL version conflicts.

My basic requirement is that I would like th installer to upgrade the old version with all the files required, but leave any application and log files in tact - this way the customer won't have to reconfigure the application after install.

What is the best way to handle this?

An example of packaging web application containing database upgrade SQL file

A few months ago, we have a blog talking about extending the web publishing pipeline to package database project deployed SQL file.  In this blog, I'll show step by step example of packaging web application with SQL Server database upgrade SQL file using Visual Studio 2010.  This way, we can generate a web package with incremental SQL script to certain database version.  The scenario may help distributions of a web upgrade package which needs to be installed on many different locations, each with their own SQL server database.   1. Create a Web Application Project 2. Add a new "SQL Server 2008 Database Project" to the solution 3. Prepare a development database, such as my test1 database as the following: 4. Right click our...(read more)
