There were tons of discussions and blog posts about User Profile Synch service never starting. And now it appears that this is not even supposed to work....

I've noticed in several environments that the UPS service stops every now and then. All I can do is go an restart it in Central Administration, and it usually retains all synchronization connection settings and works fine again. I've been too busy to examine
the cause though.
Does this happen for others as well? What is the usual cause for it to stop?
I'm hoping someone on here can help with this, as I've really been round the houses with this.
Anyway I've attempted to provision the UPS Service App probably 4 times now, each time learning more and more about the common problems.
The last time, I rolled my VM back to just after the installation of SharePoint 2010 binaries, and then ran the PCW and created the farm again from scratch.
I then followed this guide: http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx
Everything seemed to work perfectly well, after provisioning UPS I did a couple of iisresets as welll as execadmsvcjobs until I could see the timer job that provisions the FIM services.
These services came up and the following errors were reported in the event log:
The first one is lies, I did start the service and verified it was running, anyway for completeness:
"There are no instances of the User Profile Service started on any server in this farm. Ensure that at least one instance is started on an application server in the farm using the Services on Server page in Central Administration."
This one I have seen constantly on my Farm through various builds:
"An exception occurred when trying to issue security token: An error occurred while receiving t

http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/library/cc263299(en-us).aspx as my guide, I'm stuck at the 'Start the User Profile Synchronisation Service' section. When I use Central
Administration to start the service, after a few minutes being on the status 'Starting' it reverts back to 'Stopped'.
When reviewing the logs I find the following error message:
UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure ILM, will attempt during next rerun. Exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Specified collection 'StringSchemaCollection' cannot be dropped because it is used by object '<DOMAIN>\<FARM
The account used is already added to the local administrators group.
One solution I did find is in the following thread:

Have a customer who's UPS Synchronization service is stuck in a "Stopping State"
The UPS service Application has been deleted. A Stop-SPServiceInstance command has been run and the Get_SPServiceInstance command shows the service is "unprovisioning"
Any ideas on what can be done next to get the service in a stopped state?
I have set up SharePoint 2010 as per MS instructions and am now trying to get the User Profile Synchronization Service to start.
I have found heaps of information regarding the Service remaining in a Starting state, then reverting back to Stopped and not logging any
The Server Farm account, which is created
I've found lots of information in the forum and elsewhere about ways to stop this service, but none are working. I did the following to try and stop it...
Deleted User Profile Service Application
Stopped User Profile Service
Rebooted both WFEs several times
Ran get-spserviceinstance and the service is 'Disabled'
The User Profile Synchronization Service is still stuck in "Starting"...so what now?!?
