A better way to reference your wizard steps using named steps

Posted By: Rahul     Posted Date: October 05, 2009    Points: 2   Category :ASP.Net
Note: this article uses the plain vanilla <asp:Wizard> but the concepts apply equally well to its popular counterpart <asp:CreateUserWizard>.

By far the most common way that I see wizard steps reference in code snippets is by their index.

Some wizard steps inaccessible from code behind

I have a CreateUserWizard with three Wizard steps and one CreateUserWizardStep.  The first two are accessible from the code behind by ID.  The third and fourth are not!  If I comment out the references to these two steps in the code behind the page runs fine.  I have triple checked the variable names and everything is fine.  Everything that should have a runat="server" does, everything is enabled, all of that good stuff.

Any ideas why some steps in the same CreateUserWizard may not be visible from the code behind and others are?  REALLY odd...

Can I create several steps to be run on a SharePoint list as a task to run on a daily basis?

We have a manual process that we do on a SharePoint list to export data from SharePoint to a spreadsheet that can then be used by non SharePoint programs.  I'd like to be able to automate this process so that it can be scheduled as a Task to run on a daily basis.   Not sure if a workflow can do what I'd like it to.  I have SharePoint Designer 2007 as well.

Here are the steps:

1. Load a particular View of a SharePoint List

2. From the view's Action menu, "Open with Access"

3. Save the resulting Access database as a file to a specific Folder on the computer hosting SharePoint

This would be run as a Task on the computer hosting SharePoint.

MSSQL 2008 R2: Change Server Collation Steps, with user DBs already of desired collation

On the default instance of SQL Server 2008 R2, I want to change the server collation from the usual US default SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS to an application vendor's required collation, Latin1_General_BIN.  I understand that changing the server collation is essentially the same as changing the collation of databases master and model -- is that a fair statement? But my main question is, since there are user databases on the server that I would like to preserve, can I not simply detatch the user DBs prior to performing the server collation change, and then reattach?  The database collation of the user databases is already set to Latin1_General_BIN.  This article, Setting and Changing the Server Collation, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179254.aspx says that to preserve the user databases, I should script all DB objects out, and bulk-copy all data out, because the DBs will have to be recreated and repopulated.  Can someone explain why I ought not simply detach and reattach the user DBs, given that they are already of the desired collation (i.e., the same collation that I will be changing the server collation to)? Your help much appreciated. -Tom

How to execute a set of steps N time, in parallel?

I have a custom workflow activity that creates "tasks" for users to do.  Tasks are shown to a specified user when they log in to the web site.  When this step runs, it takes in a userId, creates a task in the database for that user, and then sets a bookmark.   When the user goes to the web site, they see their tasks.  When they push a button to complete a task, the bookmark is resumed and the step ends.   So far so good.  The problem is that the design now calls for the workflow to be able to kick off multiple tasks for multiple users, and that all the tasks be started at once (that is, its not good enough for user #1 to receive a task, complete it, user #2 receive a task, complete it, etc.  All the users should receive their task to start with, and then they can finish them in any order.)   I can't do this serial with a for loop, since then there'd only be one task "outstanding" at a time, and they'd have to be completed in order.  I can't simply modify the custom activity to take in the multiple pieces of data, because there's a lot of other items that happen in the workflow that need to be done before and after the custom activity for each task.  What I'd really like is something like the Parallel activity, where I create the branch and place all the tasks, but then I can assign the number of times

What are the Steps Installing Infopath Form Service on WSS 3.0 or do I need to upgrade to MOSS?

I  have configured Extranet Https Portal for our configuration. It includes some custom web-parts features in the site. My WSS 3.0 -Cenrtal Admin version is I have MOSS 2007 - Central Version Now I have designed a Infoapth form and want to publish to a library in the site.We can publish the form to a library but At client side Infopath 2007 sholud be installed in order to submit the form.It is not Browser Enabled. ( You cannot enable InfoPath Forms Services in WSS, because it is not present in WSS. Before you can enable InfoPath Forms Services, you have to install Forms Server or MOSS Enterprise.  It is not Browser enabled.  ) Infopath form services is a component of MOSS not WSS Is there any other way instead of intalling Moss 2007 can I only Install Infoapth Form services on it. Can I upgrade the WSS 3.0 to MOSS 2007 and get the Infoapth form services to the existing site without any loss of data.   I have read that while upgrading wss to moss the central admin version  should be same then only you can upgrade is this true?? what steps I need to consider ?? What steps to enable My Sites to be accessed externaly when it uses port 9000 and not 80

Hi, Running Sharepoint 2010, Windows server 2008 R2, ISA server 2005. I have two web application running on different ports "Home" running on port 80 and "My Sites" running on port 9000. I have enabled the "Home" site (port 80) to be accessed through the ISA server so users can log in remotely and now have to do the same for the "My Sites" (running on port 9000) but am unsure of what steps i have to take since it is using a different port. Will I have problems with users accessing this from Hotels, cafes etc since this port isn't open or is all the traffic directed through port 80. Do I need to open this port on my firewall? Is this all taken care in Alternate access mapping? Any help would be appreciated.

SSRS 2008 R2 Problem understanding View State Validation steps

Hi, Sorry, but I have some problem understanding this steps. Please help me to understand this.  Pasted from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc281307.aspx?lc=1033 How to Configure View State Validation To run a scale-out deployment on an NLB cluster, you must configure view state validation so that users can view interactive HTML reports. You must do this for the report server and for Report Manager. View state validation is controlled by the ASP.NET. By default, view state validation is enabled and uses the identity of the Web service to perform the validation. However, in an NLB cluster scenario, there are multiple service instances and web service identities that run on different computers. Because the service identity varies for each node, you cannot rely on a single process identity to perform the validation. To work around this issue, you can generate an arbitrary validation key to support view state validation, and then manually configure each report server node to use the same key. You can use any randomly generated hexadecimal sequence. The validation algorithm (such as SHA1) determines how long the hexadecimal sequence must be. Generate a validation key and decryption key by using the autogenerate functionality provided by the .NET Framework. (Well, how to generate Validation key using .Net Framework?) In the end, you must have a singl

General question steps to configure mysites in SharePoint 2010

I am trying to configure the mysite web application, so I have created a DNS record "mysite" and created a web application for the mysite and created a mysite host site collection on it. Now I have read somewhere that u have to create managed paths for the profile and the mysite, which actually corresponds with the name of the DNS record/mysite webapp. For some reason when i am opening the mysite, i get a url something like http://my/my. What am i doing wrong? Can somebody just give me a step by step approach on how to configure Mysites in MOSS 2010?I am a SharePoint Infrastructure Engineer, focussed on Administration and Installation of SharePoint Server environments.

Two steps to check out?

When I go to Documents folder that I have created and access a folder, I would like to open and check out a file in one step, but appears to need two.  It appears that the only time that it updates "Checked Out To" is when I choose check out.  Then I have to go open the file via explorer or Word/Excel (or whatever is appropriate).  If i double click on the file while in SharePoint or choose Edit in Microsofft... mode, it does open the file, but does not indicate that it is not checked out.  I want to make sure that no one else can also check out or open the same file and make changes/updates while I am doing this.  Does everyone have to go through the two steps to check out and then open to enable this?  Or is there quick one step that I am missing to open a file and indicate that it is checked out? Thanks Peter
