Turning off Crawling the Central Administration site?

There are 2 places that "Search Visibility" can be set on WSS3 servers:

What are the ramifications of "hiding" the Central Administration site from search?

Sharepoint 2010 Missing Content Types

Has anyone run into an issue where your system's base content types dissappear after deploying a new site definition.  We are doing a proof of concept using several CMS solutions and decided to see how sharepoint would fare in the process.  I worked on the POC for 6 weeks without any issues.  After selecting sharepoint as the solution I started refactoring my code into a more logical structure as many of the components were developed from sample code.  I created a couple of custom site definitions that were pretty simple.  Basically I copied the onenet.xml from the publishing site template that sharepoint uses and made a few simple modifications like associating my custom master page and a custom content type with the default page.  When I initially developed these I had no issues at all but yesterday I suddenly was not able to create sites using these site defs.  I figured there was some kind of conflict with my old templates so I deleted all site collections on the server and then tried to create a new site collection and then I couldn't even create a base publishing site.  I got an error indicating the base content type did not exist.  After spending hours going through logs it was clear that sharepoint was not able to build the content type hiearchy when creating new sites so I took a look at the UI and there were only abo

Site built off of Central Administration. How to I move it?

Our developer built a site off of the Central Admin page with the admin page located at: http://sp_server:8080/default.aspx and the main page of the site loacted at: http://sp_server:8080/Intranet/SitePages/Home.aspx. How do I disassociate the Central Admin page from the Main page, as well as change the port number to 80 for the main page? Thanks in advance. Tom

Duplicate Fields during list creation from content types and site columns

I am trying to create a List in Sharepoint 2010 using Site Columns and Content Types. It results in creating duplicate fields in the list for the Site Columns used. Here is the details description of what I was doing.

I have created two site columns

<Field Type="Number" DisplayName="Start Coordinate" Required="TRUE" EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE" Indexed="FALSE"
Group="QMS" ID="{A3F2D108-11B5-4B49-9633-338D27227E12}"
Name="StartCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

Group="QMS" ID="{06B927BB-C354-4A0A-AE88-9C14E55EAB27}"
Name="EndCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

SP2010 Upgrade Error: Missing Reusable Content Types

During the in-place upgrade from MOSS2007 to SharePoint 2010, I experienced the following issue for numerous site collections.  Even though these were errors, the configuration wizard completed with Errors stating that there were some sites not fully upgraded.

I cannot determine how to resolve this error and complete the content database upgrade.   Thanks in advance.

In the Upgrade-YYYYMMDD-######-##-error.log file, the following details were logged for about 15 different site collections:

Custom Content Types Missing after 2007 Upgrade to 2010

Hello everyone -

We have a portal solution leveraging custom publishing content types and page layouts in 2007. The database was backed up, and the upgrade was done via dbattach on a 2010 environment. The site works seemingly fine - though there is some strange behavior we noticed where a few content types are missing.

The Content Type Gallery lists only say 10 of the 15 content types we should have. Loading the Master Page and Page Layout Gallery we see the inheriting content type, though clicking on it yields in an error as though it cannot find the content type. These are all custom content types, though they are not very different from each other.

Has anyone experienced this problem and devised a solution? - I tried to iterate through the site collection via a console application to see if I could somehow update or intercept the issue with the missing content types to no avail. I'll be open to suggestions / tools recommended...

All the best,

Alex

Easy way to migrate site columns and content types from moss 2007 to sharepoint 2010?

Easy way to migrate site columns and content types from moss 2007 to sharepoint 2010?

Getting unknown errors in central administration. Site backups always fail. OWSTimer Errors.

Originally we had a 1 server standalone MOSS2007 install. (All service packs applied)

Then we added another server to the farm to act as a web server.

We decided to take the web server offline. So that ideally we would be back to our 1 server standalone setup. All our sharepoint sites still work fine after we did this, but things on the central administration side are horribly broken.

1. The web server still appears in farm topology even though it is offline, no longer exists. It also appears as "Windows SharePoint Services Database".

2. Trying to go into "Servers in farm" under Operations causes an unknown error.

3. Trying to go into "Timer job status" under Operations causes an unknown error.

The error log displays the following each time I try to access "Servers in farm" or "Timer job status"

OWSTIMER.EXE (0x199C) The following error occured while trying to read the ConnectionString property.  Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Now before I try to do some serious reconfiguration I would like to backup my sites. If I use the "Perform a backup" feature in central administration, it tells me the backup job has been scheduled, but after waiting for hours it still hasn't started, and doesn't look l

Anything wrong with creating an Intranet/IIS web site as a subsite under Central Administration?

After installing WSS 3.0, we can set up a subsite under the Central Administration.  My question is: if we want to create an Intranet,
i.e. an IIS Web site/web application, is it okay to create this Intranet under the CentralAdministration?  It seemed to me it is not right
to create an Intranet under the Central Administration, but I don't know anything wrong.

Reset site collection content types

Hi,

I have a "Test Document" content type inheriting from the default "Document" content type which, in turn, inherits from "Item". The "Test Document" is a MS Word template document (as is "Document").

I went into the "Site Settings" of the site collection, selected "Site content types" -> "Document" -> "Advanced Settings" and while the "Update all content types inheriting from this type" was set to Yes, I clicked OK.

Now when I go back to the documents library and open the "New" menu to create a new document, both the "Document" and the "Test Document" logos are changed to plain icons (not the MS Word icons it had before) and when I click it I get the "Upload Document" dialog.

Is there a way to restore the site collection's content types to their default settings?

Thank you,

Sagy

Join related data by using content types and site columns?

Hi guys

Say for instance if I have process column and a sub - process column, and if I chose a process I want to only show the relevant sub - processes instead of all. I need to solve this by using content types and site columns. Any ideas, or guides on how I can acheive that?

Sharepoint 2010 Central Administration Web site on Windows 7 comes up empty

Using the information presented at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869.aspx (slightly modified to accommodate the fact that the SharePoint 2010 is today distributed in the form of an ISO file), I was able to finish all steps including all 10 steps of the configuration wizard. Dismissing the wizard should result with launching the browser showing the new SharePoint site - in my case however, that browser shows a completely empty page.

Similarly, selecting the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration entry from the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products folder (on the list of all installed products) results with the browser started at URL http://nik-workstation:23789/ - which is also completely empty

Since UAC is disabled - it ought to be the database. I believe that before installing SP 2010, I had SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP (this is required by Azure AppFabric development) and I was hoping that the SP installer will find the database that fits the best.

What is the best way to handle this? What is causing the problem?

Site content types Vs List content types

Hello all,

While creating my first SP site using visual studio 2010; following the best practices guidelines from Microsoft I created a content type for each data entity and of course a site column for every and each field in those entities -can't describe how tedious this was-. Anyway, when I started creating List definitions based on those content types I noticed that the CAML xml code is literally copied to the schema.xml rather than referencing it. If I made any changes to the original content type it's not reflected in those lists. On the other hand when I make changes to the list content type -in contrast to the site content type- things are reflected on the site properly. Why the redundancy?

I mean I even tried to use <ContentTypeRef> in the schema.xml to reference my site content type and get rid of the redundancy with no luck!!! Content Types and even fields must be defined int the schema.xml with no direct relation to the site content type already defined in the project!! Fields must be defined in the <fields> element in schema.xml and referenced in the <contentType> element of schema.xml too, regardless that they're already defined at the site level!!

So, if I have to define content types/fields at the level of the list, and visual studio can't automatically track changes made to site content types, why bot

working with site content types

I have a feature that is installed for my site collection. It provides a contenty type from which a custom list is made available when creating a list.  In the site content type gallery of my collection I edited the content type in question (removed a number of its columns, and re-ordered them).  I notice though, that when I create a new list that uses this content type, it still has all the columns I deleted, and the columns that do appear are not in the order that I specified.  Can someone explain this to me please? Doesn't this new list get its content type from the content type within my site content gallery?  Or is it getting some original definition out on the SP server somewhere?

There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what your are trying to accomplish.

SharePoint Tutorial - Content Types

SharePoint content types provide users with a way to manage and organize content in a more meaningful way. It's a reusable of settings you want to apply to a particular type of document in a library or item in a list.
