Sharepoint site by something other than computer name: port number

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 03, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I am quite new to sharepoint and like what I see so far, but I am having major problems getting a site by a domain other than http://computername:portnumberto work for me.

For example.  Lets say my computer name is sharepoint server and I want to create a web application and collection by the name of mysite.mysite.com.  The mysite.mysite.com site creates fine and shows up in IIS fine.  I create a host file entry for mysite.mysite.com and point it to my server.  When I try and browse to the site http://mysite.mysite.com I get challenged for authentication.  If I ping the site it is pinging the correct server. I put in the correct username and password, but I am unable to login.  If I create a site that is just the computer name and a random port number I am able to log in.

I figure I am missing something simple, but I have tried to research this for several hours and have gotten no where. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would also like to add that I would like to make serveral sites that are running over port 80 by using host headers...if that changes anything.

Use Report Builder 3.0 with SharePoint site using a port number

We are currently working with SSRS R2 and SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint 2010 has been deployed a multitenant solution.  SharePoint and SSRS are on separate servers.  We have successfully integrated the two products but are experiencing some anomolies.  The SharePoint site we are deploying to uses a port number (e.g. http://mysharepointsvr:2222).  When you launch Report Builder from this site, it does not open connected to a Report Server.  When you try to connect to a Report Server the obvious choice is to put in http://mysharepointsvr:2222 for the Report Server service.  However, this does not work.  We are getting the following error: Connection Failed.  Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL, 'http://mysharepointsvr:2222'.  Make sure the server is running, the URL is correct, and you have permission to use the server. However, if we use the SharePoint address without the port number it will connect.  This does not work as the SharePoint port determines which site we are directed to for resources.  In our case, we need to be able to browse the folders on port 2222 not port 80 (default).  As far as the error above is concerned, we are able to browse to the report server (http://sql101/reportserver) and see all of the SharePoint sites.  In all cases, identical credentials are being u

IIS - sharepoint/default website port number confusion

I have MOSS 2007 installed with IIS V7.

My default web site port is 80. When I created a new web application for my main sharepoint portal I also set it to 80. So obviously now the default web site port shows as stopped in IIS and it won't start.

What are the best practices. Should I change the port number for my portal to something else? I mean is it even a good idea to have sharepoint on port 80? If so, how do I go about changing the port number for my portal site?

any help appreciated.

Changing the graphics on the home page of a SharePoint site

When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor

What is a SharePoint site for?
A SharePoint site is a Web site that provides a central storage and collaboration space for documents, information, and ideas. A SharePoint site is a tool for collaboration, just like a telephone is a tool for communication, or a meeting is a tool for decision making. A SharePoint site helps groups of people (whether work teams or social groups) share information and work together. For example, a SharePoint site can help you:

Coordinate projects, calendars, and schedules.
Discuss ideas and review documents or proposals.
Share information and keep in touch with other people.

Six easy ways to customize your site using Web Parts in SharePoint

Becoming familiar with Web Part customization techniques gives you a range of page-customization choices. For example, you can customize your site's home page so that it displays the specific information that your team needs. You can rearrange the list items on the home page, add lists, and even change the images on the home page. As you become more familiar with Web Part Page customization techniques, you can build interactive Web Part Pages that makes the data in lists more dynamic and useful, and you can add new Web Parts that provide access to external data and Web services.

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 1 of 2

In this first part of the two part series, Steven covers the differences between Site and Application pages in SharePoint 2007, why each may be used in various circumstances, and prepares for the construction of a menu located application page. After a brief introduction he examines the concept of Site Pages and Application Pages separately in detail with supported screenshots.

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 2 of 2

As the second article in a two part series, Steven examines the attributes and details of a SharePoint 2007 application page, including the construction and feature deployment of the same page based project. Since this is a WSS level objective, as opposed to MOSS, you will not need MOSS to work with the code included in this project. Windows Server 2003, WSS, and Visual Studio 2005 are all that is needed, with no additional add-ons. He provides a detailed analysis of each step involved in the creation and deployment of the project.

Trying to launch a .exe file on my local computer from intranet site.

I have been told I can launch a local program on my PC from my intranet site but it has to be done with Active X or vbscript and not javascript.  I found the following little sample html code that will launch notepad.  However, I cannot figure out how to put this in a button, etc., within my aspx or code behind to execute it.  Does anybody have any idea how to do this?  I have a lot of javascript code I am launching urls with and I have even tried using that but again, I have been told that to do it client side it needs to be vbscript or something like this.  Any ideas?

Redirect to Security Questions if Site accessed from unrecognized computer?

I'm fairly new to ASP.NET and i'm using the Membership Provider.  I have the need to do similar to some banking sites. Baically I need to track "authorized" computers/ip's for a user.  If the user accesses the site form a recognized Computer/IP then the user is allowed into the app after successful login.  If the computer/IP is not recognized I need to redirect them to a screen to answer the security question setup in fhte Membership Provider.

Has anyone done anything like this or can anyone point me to any examples?  I did a search, but can't seem to find anything.

My idea is to maintain a list of authorized computers/IP addresses and check them on initial login.  If the IP address isn't found I can redirect them to the questions.  My concern is that they are then actually authenticated and could enter any of the site URL's as an authenticated user.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
