Item Level Security Using Column Values

Has anyone successfully implemented item-level security in a SharePoint list using column values as the decision criteria? I realize this isn't out of the box functionality and would need to be custom coded.

 

For example, let's say that we have one document library that stores all of the HR documents about every employee in the company. One of the columns in the properties of the document stores which Office that employee reports to. There are HR staff that support each Office and should only have access to the files of employees who report to the same office that they do.

 

I know an option would be to create separate library or folder structures for each Office, but I'm curious if anyone has attempted to secure items or documents using properties instead.

We are creating a custom list where we allow customers to post questions.   However we really don't want customers to see each others questions in those lists.   There are way to many customers/users to create seperated lists.  I've read most of the topics already included on this forum.  So I know permissions on views aren't possible.   I also read that the best way to go ahead is to work with event handlers to set custom item level security on the item.  

Also, what if you wanted to use groups for achieving this?   You create groups for each company that will use this list.  So when a user from one specific company creates an item, you want to allow that his whole company is able to read the item.   You don't want anyone from another company to have any access to this item.  

I'm not a developer and I'm wondering whether I can accomplish this with SharePoint Designer in an easy way?   Is there an alternative without having to write code?

Column Level Security using Label Based Security

I am looking to implement Cell level security in my SQL Server database. I am building this database for a social-networking-like web application. It has the concept of a Group and a Group Member where a group member can restrict access to certain parts of his information. I have read through the article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966395.aspx about Label based security. My problem is that i am not sure whether Label based security would be able to provide cell level security when I'll be storing users of my application in a database table and not using SQL Server or Windows logins? Say I have a user 'Omer' in table 'Member' then how would Lable Based Security technique ensure security settings defined for this user? Thanks for providing assistance.

As more organizations adopt XML-based Web Services, the need for message-level security has become evident. WS-Security, now supported in the Microsoft .NET Framework, addresses this need. Using the WS-Security framework, developers can implement channel sinks to intercept Remoting messages as they pass through the .NET Remoting infrastructure. The sink can read the message, change it, and pass it along. During this process, the message can be signed for added security. This article explains how to implement a Remoting channel sink that will modify the Remoting message by including a UserName token in the header, then sign the body using the token.

ASP.NET 4.0 Menu Top Level selected item style

  

I want to apply a css class to the level 1 menu item (parent) when it or any or it's children are selected.

I've looked at MSDN documentation and any number of examples and walkthroughs but I haven't come up with a way of managing this. I was thinking something like this might work but the style is not being applied to the parent. To further complicate matters, if I try to apply a css style to StaticSelectedStyle it doesn't pick it up at all.

Configure BDC column to have multiple values selected

  

How do I Configure BDC column to have multiple values selected and make multiple entities data available in the same column.  Currently it supports only single value for an item.  This requirement is crucial need some solution immediately.

Use Case:

We are creating a storage location for technical product articles. These will be SharePoint publishing pages. Each page will have metadata assigned to it to make it searchable by properties. The possible values for one of the columns (Part Number) could potentially be sourced by our ERP system. I'd like to do this to eliminate the possibility of free-text entry errors, but there are probably over 10,000 parts so a drop-down list isn't feasible.

 

Ideal Situation:

The end user enters the part number and clicks a button to verify it against a BDC entry from our ERP system. If they weren't sure on the part number they needed, they could do a lookup from that metadata entry screen. They'd need to have the option to add multiple part numbers as one technical product article could reference multiple part numbers.

 

Question:

Is BDC an option for all of this or am I looking at a custom metadata solution? I thought I heard along the way that BDC only supported one value choice, but I couldn't find a verification for that in the forums.

wss2.0 update/delete/hide lookup column that does not display any values

  

Hi All,

I have a document library that contains a Category column that is a lookup field. This is a default column that is a required field when uploading documents to the document library. The Category column is empty and I am unable to amend, hide, make it not required or delete it.

I have gone to Modify settings and columns -> clicked on the Category field to edit, but there is no option to amend the content or delete it. I am only able to amend the Column name and Description.

Since then, I have amended the column name to eg. Category1 and created a new Category field as a lookup and linked it to the correct list.

The problem I am facing now, is that I cannot hide, delete or make the Category1 (old Category) field NOT required. Either I would like to update the original field to display the correct values or alternately hide, delete or make the column not required.

Please help.

Passing values from web page to custom security trimmer in SharePoint 2010

  
Hi, In SharePoint 2007 we had a custom security trimmer that implemented ISecurityTrimmer interface. We also had a custom webpart used for search. Now, using HttpContext we passed values from the webpart to security trimmer with additional info needed to trim the results. It worked since trimmer was executed in the same w3wp process as webpart. Now in SharePoint 2010, the architecture for ISecurityTrimmer2 has changed, as it's executed in search process (other w3wp) - not the webpart w3wp so it has no access to the HttpContext. Question is: how to pass custom data, in form of the string, to a security trimmer when search is done from custom code in webart?

So i am Brand new in this area i have developed reports before and deployed them but never got an oppurtunity to work on security and who gets to see what.. Purpose of the view is thats what im thinking..   We have a reports database has 100 reports . What we are trying to do is have a faster way to manage report subscriptions. The tables i have is Analysts, SalesRep,SalesRepSubs and dbo.users.Dbo users are our web portal users where they can view reports. I want to create a table in which every report is viewed per security level. We have 6 layers of security layer 1 is lowers to layer 6 being highest. This is the relationship between tables Salesrep(SRID PK) Salesrep_sub (SRID_SUBID PK) Analysts : (AnalystIDPK) Users: The Table has all Users who are Salesrep,Sales Repsub and Analysts)(PKID PK) and we have cols SRID, SRID_SUBID & AnalystID) in this table. use Pricing go Alter View dbo.User_Access   AS select S.SR_name,u.SRID,sr.SRsub_name,u.SRID_SubID,U.Userid,u.username,u.Email, u.SecurityLevel,a.AnalystID from dbo.Users u join tbl_Analyst a on a.AnalystID=u.UserID join tbl_SalesRep s on s.SRID=u.SRID Join tbl_SalesRep_Sub sr on sr.SRID_SubID=u.SRID_SubID My question is what do i do next? search on managed metadata column values

  
I am trying to search on a managed metadata column in a list.  I have the managed metadata as a mapped property (these are automatically set up actually). I have a column frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) I can enter a search box owstaxIdFrequency=#a132a333-39f1-4737-9ad4-a932482e025f   //this is the taxonomy guid for Daily.  This shows results. How do I search on the word "Daily" in the frequency column?  (I just want to figure it out on a simple search first meaning just using one search box)   I noticed that there are extra maped columns for managed metadata columns (owstaxIdFrequency also has owstaxIdFrequencyx0020Tag, I tried owstaxIdFrequencyx0020Tag="Daily", but it didn't work)

How do I get column values in Sharepoint designer so I can use them as a variable in code block?

  
The code below is in my EditForm.aspx and it works but instead of it outputting "This is just a test!" I need get a number that is stored in a column named Phone Number that has 5555555555 stored in it and have the line that says TD2.innerHTML = "This is just a test!"; ouput what ever number is stored in the Phone Number column. Display the list column values along with the search result

  
Hi All, i created custom Scope (to search on specific list) and i need to display all list columns on my search results.  Say i have 2 columns in the list and i have created a scope to search in only in that list. If i do a search in tat scope i would like to get the list values which fits in the search along with the columns as well. thanks jayaraja

the locig of data is Country 1 - City1 - Company1 -> Nett Income Country 1 - City1 - Company2 -> Nett Income Country 1 - City1 - Company3 -> Nett Income                                                  Total Income   How can i achive the following logic  - the user (role) Company2 have to see only Total for City 1 (Company1+Company2+Company3), just total and Country 1 - City1 - Company2 -> Nett Income I can use dimension data and check Country 1 - City1 - Company2 but in this case he/she can't see totals for City 1 any ideas ?

 Hi I have a site We have different Pages under one folder. we have stored these pages information in a database table with pageid. Then we have User access table. there we store userid and pageid , for which pages user has access. Now I need to provide access to that pages only . What to do.
