Should I go Client Side or Server Side?

Posted By:      Posted Date: October 03, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Hi Everyone,

I am currently working on a site where I expect most of the visitors to be returning visitors.  Their main use for this site will be to check a vast amount of data which should only occur some minor changes about once a day.  I will expect quite a lot of users and I would like my website to operate as efficiently as possible.

To make the site as efficient as possible I am thinking of building my website in a way that does not seem to be the way most web developers go about building their site I and would like to know what some of you think about my approach.  I decided to make all my pages in HTML, CSS and Javascript and therefore no .aspx pages.  All data relative to the user will be stored in cookies and I will have an AJAX script that will poll the server to check only for changes in the data since the last time a query to the data was made meaning that the user will not have to download all the data every time the user visits the site but only the small changes.  The login part of the web site will also be javascript based.  Inside a cookie a session id will be stored and every query to the web server will require that session id to be sent to validate if the user is allowed to access tha

How to connect to MOSS server using visual studio from client side

Dear All We are having one moss development environment and we are having many developers working on it.Since all the developers cannot work at a time,we are facing difficulties while developing sharepoint components. Is there any way to connect to sharepoint server from visual studio(from client side) so that we can compile our sharepoint components from client side and deploy later to the server? Any help on this would be much appreciated? Thanks Karthik S

Client Side vs. Server Side, which is better to do?

This is a two fold question. The first is which should I user over the other Client Side rendering or Server Side rendering? I know it depends on the situation like if I needed to build a drop down list populated from a SQL DB then server side but what about normal static things like links and this leads into my second question. I want to make button that reloads the page current page from scratch. Should I make an ASP:Button and have C# backend code that redirects to the URL or should I use a normal HTML button that has JScript to do the redirect? And if it makes a difference the dedicated server I run on has an Intel Xeon X345 @ 2.7GHz with 4 GB ram running 2008 R2 Web, IIS 7.5, and SQL 2008 web on it so resorces are limited.

WCF session client service reference "State" is not updated when the server side has closed

I am using vb.net (Visual Studio 2008 with framework 3.5). I have a server that exposes several services requiring sessions. I am using wsHttpBinding for all. One of my requirements is to allow non-dot net third parties to access these services. When a client connects to a service and then some time later the server goes away, the state of the connection is still reporting "open".

Currently I have implemented a "ping" function on the server. My client calls this function every 5 to 10 seconds and if the server does shutdown, I get alerted with an exception error. This works, but I was wondering if there is a way where I don't have to call my ping function?

I don't want to use a dual connection binding and I was hoping to use the connection state variable? But, I don't know how to get it to update by itself. The client user application could just wait until it goes to invoke a service method, but I was wondering if there was another way.

Thanks in advance!!

client side functionality in a custom server control using vb?

is it posible to add client side functionality to a custom server control in vb.net?

i am looking at msdn library and there is no code for vb :/ http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa719700%28v=VS.71%29.aspx

I fount this on MSDN Library Adding Client Capabilities to a Web Server Control

What i'm trying to do is to add some client functionality to my control, so that you can get or set some properties/values on client side. From the above link i see  that this is doable with Ajax Server Control, but i don't have it, i have Custom Server Control. Can i do this with Custom Server Control and how?

Thank you.

Client side script for server side controls

I have a whole table full of checkboxes each of which is associated with a label.  Both checkboxes and labels have runat="server".  What I'd like to do is to write a small script that will make visible or hide the label depending on the check state of the checkbox.

function ShowHideLabel(cbControl, lControl)
    lControl.Visible = cbControl.Checked;

<asp:checkbox id="cb1" runat="server" text="CheckBox 1" OnClick="?" />
<asp:label id="l1" runat="server" text="I am visible" />

What do I need to put in OnClick for this to work?

How can I retrieve the value if a server side control value whose value is updated on client side on

I have a hidden variable and its value is being updated using javascript(client side) which I make a call from server side code.

After making the call I am not able to retrieve the updated value from Server side variable.

I went through this forum http://forums.asp.net/p/1289684/3668484.aspx but not able find a way how to implement functionality with IFRAME.

Please provide me some sample code. I am trying to call the client side code and retrieve the updated value from server side in page_load event.

Notify jquery from server (trigger an asynchronous client side event from the server).

I want to have a code that would establish connection from the server to the jQuery client, to update the front page of the website, when some new data is added to the DB. I of course could have an ajax call from the client on every second to check up the database for any changes, but I am just wondering if there is any way to establish a connection from the server side to the client.

The perfect solution would work like that:

- when the page is open, the client registers itself on the server for changes

- the server (knowing all the registered clients) prompts all of them when a change is done

- if any of the clients does not respond, the server removes the client from the registered list

- clients, update the page contents with the new data from the server

The question is if it is possible? Again, I could make all the clients reconnect to the server every second using ajax, however, this does not seem like a clean solution, and additionally it would put an unnecessary load on the server (e.q. 100 clients requesting update every second).

Thanks in advance,

design strategy to overcome a server side control that can be manipulated by the client - (Security

Ok so we have a dot net aspx app whereby we have some server side button controls which in some states may be disabled

However per Internet Explorer a user could  go to the developer tools and change / delete the disabled property of the button and then click the button to fire the action event.

What would be the best recommended strategy to prevent this.

many thanks

call JavaScript - jQuery code from ASP.NET Server-Side

jQuery got so close to me lately that I can see myself adding the scripts to my project almost unconsciously. The thing is, jQuery is very useful for me, in almost all situations and it has been a do or die enhancement for all my project since I first put my hands on it.

Of course while using it, you encounter few situations which need a bit of research to solve, mostly when you are trying to combine it with some other technologies like: UpdatePanels and ASP.NET Ajax. For instance there are many situations when I would like to run some jQuery magic based on some decision that I make on the server side.
