Posted By:      Posted Date: October 02, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Please let me know any practical guidelines of max server memory setting if you have multiple instances on the same box. Brand new server and not much of historical data available. What are some safe guidelines and tweaking instructions?

Rebooting one Instance on a SQL 2008 Server with multiple instances installed

Hello, Hoping someone can answer the following questions ... If I have SQL Server 2008 with multiple Named Instances configured on it, can I reboot one Named Instance without rebooting any of the other Named Instances, or without having to reboot the entire server ? For example, if I have an application that needs to be re-booted and it requires the Database to be re-booted. Regards, JD

Installing multiple instances of SQL Server R2 creates permissions issues - first instance won't st

After installing two named instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 DataCenter edition (R2D2 and C3P0) I found the first instance would no longer start.  The errorlog showed the reason to be an invalid path. 2010-09-14 18:15:39.12 Server      Error: 17113, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-14 18:15:39.12 Server      Error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) occurred while opening file 'C:\MSSQL\SQLDAT\MSSQL10_50.R2D2\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary. Finding the files in the proper location I check the ACLs and found the Local Group created for the second instance on the ACL for the first instance.  That is to say for instance R2D2 I found MSP-JANHONJ7\SQLServerMSSQLUser$MSP-janhonj7$C3P0 instead of the MSP-JANHONJ7\SQLServerMSSQLUser$MSP-janhonj7$R2D2 that was originally there. C:\MSSQL\SQLDAT\MSSQL10_50.R2D2\MSSQL\DATA>icacls master.mdf master.mdf NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)            BUILTIN\Administrators:(F)            MSP-JANHONJ7\SQLServerMSSQLUser$MSP-janhonj7$C3P0:(F) It seems that creating the second instance causes this problem.  I have been u

Multiple SQL Server installations on different machines vs multiple instances

i've got a question concerning the topology of SQL Servers in a enterprise. Until now we had a single SQL Server to serve the need of user databases throughout the enerprise.
Now were facing a change of our infastructure: The servers will be moved to a Hyper-V machine and we are going to install some application servers, that need SQL Server as backend: SharePoint, System Center Essentials, Data Protection Manager. At least one, DPM, says it is to be designed to run on a dedicated server controlling its own SQL Server.
Now we think of giving each of this servers its own SQL Server. Is this a way to go? Or is it absolute nonsense? Should we try to force all the servers to use named instances on a single SQL Server? Sometimes i have the feeling that SQL Server becomes a part of the OS, so just install it and let the application (SharePoint, DPM, you name it) take over control.

Any advice or opinion is highly appreciated.

Thank you,

reusable classes for multiple server instances

Hi All:
I have a requirement to create a Reusable Database Class which supports multiple server instances of a replicated databse.  The pool of databases should be managed in a config file or wherever you think is best and the class should simply rotate through the list of servers. Also, A Resuable Error Handling class which is used by the database class.
Please note that this a web application so all errors need to be raised back up to the caller and eventually redirect to a page which displays the error number and error message.  The error class should also support custom error numbers and descriptions which are managed internally in the .net app in a config file.

Multiple Instances of User Control

I have a user control that I place on a page severl times.  When I make a selection on a ddl in one one control the SelectedIndexChanged event fires for all the control on the page for that ddl.  So I get duplication of an insert that I do.  Is there a way to make sure these events are isolated so this doesn't happen.

Setting accessibility mode for multiple web applications

We have a SharePoint farm consisting of 5 web applications. These are tied together through branding and a custom sitemapprovider which present the farm as a single environment to end users. Our visually disabled users however have to enable the accessibility mode for each web application. Which is a nuisance, ideally they would only have to enable once for the complete farm. Does anybody have a solution for this problem.

How to run multiple instances of workflow

I've created simple sequential workflow. It's only creates one task and is waiting in while loop until task is Approved. It works fine when I run only one instance of this workflow, but if I start another instance before first one is finished it gets stack and doesn't complete task an workflow stays in In Progress state forever.

Need help with setting up SQL Server 2008 for role/user management

I've posted my problem in a few other categories.  Sorry for that.  I didn't see the security category until now.

I'm trying to use ASP.NET's built-in role/user management for a couple ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm using the MVCMusicStore as my guide.  I click on the Configuration Tool as the tutorial suggests, which launches the site administration page.  Unfortunately when I click on the security tab, I get an error that it cannot connect to the data store.  Attempting to test the AspNetSqlProvider gives me a similar error.

I've run the aspnet_regsql program as the error message suggested, and I have a role/user management database ready to go on the server.  The proper tables are constructed, and all that.  The configuration tool still doesn't see the data store.

As a test, I ran the MVCMusicStore demo in the debugger.  Its role/user management functionality worked.  I was able to add myself as a customer, and add/remove items from my cart with no errors or exceptions.  However, when I attempted to access its security tab in the configuration tool, I received the same error as I get for my own project.  How is it possible that role/user management works, but the configuration tool cannot change its settings?

Any suggestions on how I can get the configuration t

Educational question: How server objects are accessed from multiple client threads?

I will appreciate it if someone can help me to undestand how the following scenario works:   There is remoting server that is registered as WellKnownObjectMode.Singleton. Server implementation: It instantiates a class TestServer that implements interface IFoo interface IFoo { IHelper GetHelper() }   interface IHelper { void StoreString(); }   Implementation of TestServer: internal sealed class TestServer: System.MarshalByRefObject, IFoo { private IHelper> helper = new Helper(); public IHelper GetHelper(string helper){return helper;} }   Implementation of Helper: internal sealed class Helper : System.MarshalByRefObject, IHelper { public void StoreString (string val) {}; }   Implementation of a client (simplified; shown to illustrate the question only): static class Program { public static IFoo TestService; public static IHelper Helper; public TestThreads testmultiplecalls; [STAThread] static void Main() { TestService = (IFoo)Activator.GetObject(typeof(IFoo),"ipc://Channel"); Helper = TestService.GetHelper(); testmultiplecalls.Start(); } }   internal class TestThreads { public Start() { for (int i = 0; i < 20; i++) ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem((new TestCall(i.ToString())).DoWork); } }     internal class TestCall { private string m_str; public TestCall (string str) {m_str = str;} public void DoWork() { Program.Helper.StoreString(m_str); } }     Que

server to communicate with multiple clients

Hi, The server sends event to multiple clients; It goes through a list of callback destination clients and sends one by one. My question is, if one client down or in dead loop processing the event, does it affect all the other clients to receive event? Is it the same if I use HTTP or name pipe? The code is like that: for each (callback^ cb in registeredCallbacks) { cbClient = getClient(cb); if (cbClient) { try { cbClient->sendEvent(data); } catch (Exception^ ex) { deregisterCallback(cb, ex) } }   I wonder if one client fails, would it affect all the others. Thanks in advance Simon

Multiple XML files into SQL SERVER Express 2005

Hello. I am familiar with classic ASP and use this with MS SQL SERVER EXPRESS. I have an SQL table and want to import multiple XML files into this on a daily basis. I currently have 3 files, transferdata.vbs which loops through the XML files. FAQschema.xml which maps XML to the SQL database and test.xml shows the xml in the test file. If I run transferdata.vbs I get the following error "Error opening the data file" line 33 char 3. Microsoft Bulkload for SQL Server". My SQL table is called EnqOrd id (int), Debitor (varchar), PurchaseDate (varchar)     transferdata.vbs set objBL = CreateObject("SQLXMLBulkLoad.SQLXMLBulkLoad") objBL.ConnectionString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Data Source=XXXXXX\XXXXX; Initial Catalog=XXXX; User ID=XXXXX; Password=XXXXXX" objBL.ErrorLogFile = "E:\fuelsql\Teccom\error.log" ' Here is the path to your XML files Const path = "E:\fuelsql\Teccom\XML\" Dim Text, Title, oFile Dim fso, oFolder, oFiles, wsh ' Object variables Text = "Folder " Title = "XML Files" Set wsh = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") ' Create FileSystemObject object to access the file system. Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") ' Get Folder object. Set oFolder = fso.GetFolder(wsh.ExpandEnvironmentStrings(path)) ' Get All Files Set oFiles = oFolder.

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

Detect other versions of SQL Server, or SQL server instances on a computer

Hi All, I want to detect other versions of SQL Server, or SQL server instances on a computer. I used the recommended Microsoft C# example by using the SQL Server Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider. http://msdn.microsoft.com/he-il/library/dd981032(en-us,SQL.100).aspx SQL server 2005 has been correctly identified on my PC with Windows 7 64 bit OS. Then I uninstalled the SQLserver and all its tools/components. But even after uninstall the utility detects the SQL server 2005 as if it was not removed. What is an alternative for the correct detection of the SQL server installed on PC? Thanks in advance Dmitry

WmiPrvSE.exe causes a huge memory leak in SQL server 2008 R2, why?

My OS is windows server 2008 r2 data center 64 bit and my SQL server is server 2008 R2. The problem is when I open sql server, the WmiPrvSE.exe process consumes 20 - 60kbs every second. Several hours later, it eats up at least 200mbs memorry and this process seems like it will never stop. Can any experts give me some ideas to fit this mess? PS: My mainboard is Asus striker II formular, cpu is intel quad-core. Also, all my software are updated to latest version.
