does backing up and restoring site collections using STSADM or powershell back up the database too? how do contents remain in the sites? how can i backup a site collection without contents ? thanks for any help everyone :)

I have 7 site collections containing a few hundred team collaboration sites. Some users are internal (intranet) but most are external (extranet). Extranet users are experiencing problems with losing links to their sites and forgetting which URLs to
use. So I would like to create a single entry page that all users can enter after the logon process, which shows a list of sites they have permission to access, and other user-specific information. Perhaps relevant documents, tasks, recently modified documents
I know this sounds like a 'My Site' but we want to use use a general welcome page instead. We use Windows authentication.
What is the best way of doing this and is it something that can be done in SharePoing Designer or does it need to be done in Visual Studio?

I am working on a MOSS 2007 farm and like to know what would be a best way to setup Search so that I can search across multiple Site Collections? Basically, our
SharePoint farm use to have only one site collection with lots of subsites. We reorganized and promoted a lot of those subsites to site collections. After the promotion, I noticed that on each of the new site collection under the search dropdown, the
only search scope that was available was “This Site”. I was able to fix this by changing search settings and creating a custom scope by providing the link to the Search Center site that had already existed in the root site collection. However,
when I try to search from any site collection using the "All Sites" search scope, no results are displayed and I get a blank page. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.
I have SSE 2010 installed and functioning. Seven "shared" scopes have been defined and show as having the expected number of items. In my departmental web apps I have created Advanced Search and results pages so the users do not have
to leave their own web app to do searches across those defined scopes. Unfortunately the only way I found to make those scopes available in their Advanced Search web part was to "copy" the shared scopes (they display in an "unused scopes" group with
no options for use). The copy allows me to specify that the scope should appear in the Advanced Search web part and/or in the search box dropdown. Is there anyway to use those "unused" shared scopes without creating a complete copy
set of them in every site collection? Thanks for any assistance you can provide!
Hi Does anybody know a quick and easy way to push out changes to multiple site collections particularly mysites.
I have a new control I need to add on all mysites and have around 80 mysites so dont really fancy going through these one by one adding the new controls.

I am aware of a version dependency on the stsadm -o backup/restore operation.
But will the same dependency exist for a content DB backup restore..
i.e. for example will we able to restore a content DB backup taken from a server with version say 126.96.36.19977 to a server with say 188.8.131.5266 assuming that the versions of SQL is the same in both cases.
Will the version difference in SQL create issues

I have an editing web application with multiple site collections (only accessible internally on a dedicated port), and I've one public facing web application (on port 80). Now I want to create several host-named site collections in the public facing web
application (to limit the number of web apps in the farm), and then use content deployment jobs to push the content from the site collections on the editing web app into these host-named site collections.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Do you see any issues?
