Crosstab type report in MSAS

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 30, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We have SQL Server 2008, and use Targit as a reporting front end. We need a very simple type of report, with years across columns, and months/days on rows, with the values in the intersection. Like this:

      2008 2009 2010

Sep1  1      2      3

Sep2  4      5      6

Sep3  7      8      9

We have a date table, which contains date ID, year, month, day, as numeric and as text, and descriptive texts as well. Like this:

20100901;"Sep 1 2010";2010;9;"Sep";1;901;"Sep 1"

(20100901 is the primary key, which is included in the table with the values)

Now, our developer insists that it is impossible to do a crosstab thing on that in Analysis Services. He says we then have to create a second table containing only months and days. That sounds insane to me. Then we would have to create a new table every time someone wants to view it differently; years/quarters, quarters/months, years/season, etc. That is madness to me. Surely there is a way to achieve such a simple crosstab??

Report Parameter type for a list of Employees to prompt like AJAX Textbox intellisence when the user

Hi All,

I have around 300 employees report to run for a specific employee, I cannot have a Dropdown as it would be too long for the report user to choose from. Is it possible in SSRS 2008 to have a text box that would provide intellisence like AJAX textbox and provides user with Employee name to choose from database or is there any other better way to select the right mployee name to run this kind of report. being a newbie to SSRS I am unable to go furthur on this. All help is great help. Thanks in advance for responding.

SSRS 2008 R2 Map Report Type Web Viewable?

Is it possible to run the map type report in the asp.net report viewer control? I tried to use the object datasource but ran into the expected issues with the spatial db types. If not what are the alternatives to distributing the map type report? (web based, subscription, anything?)

Im new to SSRS so any help will be greatly appreciated!

Report Builder Filter shows Field as Date Type =Text instead of Date

My Data was created by retrieving ODBC data - using PowerPivot for Excel 2010, and has Birthdate defined as a Data Type = "Date".  This was uploaded to SharePoint, and a New Dataset was created to point at it.

I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0.  I tried to filter this data on Birthdate, but when I go into the Filter, and specify the field that was defined as DataType = "Date" in PowerPivot - Report Builder changes the type to "Text", and gray's out the field so that I can't change it to "Date".

If I create an Expression as Cdate(Birthdate.Value), it lets me change the Data Type to "Date", and works appropriately, but we don't want to have to do this with every date field.

Why doesn't Report Builder see this field as a Date ?

Report Builder:The type of the data source has not been specified.

I am getting the folloing error when I try to run the reeeport through report builder

An error occured during local report processing. Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' W

I've been getting this error, randomly when previewing two reports.

It does not seem to be based on report complexity, size, subreports etc. When
reports are deployed to server, they all run fine. I just get the out of memory error locally.

1. I have one version with 2 datasets, and a number of matrix, table and list data regions.
2. I have a second version with only one table data region.
3. There is no custom code, variables, prompts or generally anything other than basic
formatting in the report.
4. Both reports are based on the same SQL table.

I can seem to run the two reports (both based on same SQL table) a few times, and
then they start giving the out of memory error.

I can open other other reports and they preview fine locally.

What I've tried so far to no avail:

1. Deleted the downloaded data before refreshing the two reports.
2. Tried building the two reports before running.
3. Tried changing the process priority to high for devenv.exe.
4. Removed filters in the reports.
5. Changed the physical order of the underlying table.
6. Closed the reports and then re-opened them.
7. Close Visual Studio and Re-Open. This seems to work for a while and then the two
reports start giving the error messages again.
8. Cop

TreeSelector : playing with generics and type inference

create a generic way to define a selection starting from a tree of objects, the most simpler way as possible.

Let's start with the beginning...
Here is a very simple little interface defining a node of the tree, basically, a value and the references to the child nodes.

UnTyped DataSets and Strongly Type DataSets

We all are use datasets as a means of carrier of data from one layer to another. Most of the time we are using weakly typed datasets. In this article I will explain the differences between weakly typed datasets and strongly type datasets

Alternating row background for first column of a report

is there a way to make the first column of a report use the an alternating background color?

I have the background color set for the entire row however it does not work for the first column if the color is set to an expression.  If I just set it to a color i.e. red it works just fine. If I insert a dummy column to the left it works just fine (but the dummy column does not work, presumably because it is first??).

In the file below only the textbox for part number does not show an alternating background.  All others work correctly.

Type or namespace error.

A couple of days ago I started getting an unusual behavior when compiling Website projects. I have referenced class libraries added to my bin folder that are also correctely referenced in using statements in my aspx.cs code behind. When I compile, I get the

Bug: Does not change column type from nvarchar to ntext

Scenario: If you create a table with a column of type nvarchar, populate it with some content and try to modify it using the WebMatrix editor, from nvarchar to ntext, it does not display any error message or warning that this is not possible. It silently saves and reverts the change, back to nvarchar. Wasted some hours on this issue as I thought my column was ntext, but in fact was still nvarchar.

Expected behavior: It should change to ntext, or if SQL CE doesn't support that, it should notify the user that no change was applied.

I've added a scalar property to an entity and now ASP.NET Dynamic Data scaffolding throws this error:

This happens at the following line in global.asax:

System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPerm

Good Day all,

Having an issue with an outside user accessing my IIS7 box. I do not have this problem when running the website from my host machine. I found this post: Http://forums.asp.net/t/1371394.aspx. I assure you that this is not a solution because I am not storing any of my files on a network share.

What do you think my approach should be.

I already have read rights to IIS user to my BIN folder.

Thanks for the help.

Need Syntax To Make Results of LINQ Union Return Non-Generic Type

I have the below SQL which works just fine:

SELECT     Message, CreateDate, AccountId, AlertTypeId
FROM       dbo.Alerts
SELECT     TOP (100) PERCENT Status, CreateDate, AccountId,
(SELECT     10 AS Expr1) AS AlertTypeId
FROM         dbo.StatusUpdates
WHERE AccountId = PassedInParameter

I have been going about trying to convert the above into a LINQ method and am having problems with return types.
As the above SQL illustrates, I am querying two distinct LINQ tables - Alerts and StatusUpdates -
and then attempting to perform a Union on them. In order to do the union in LINQ, I have to have agreeing types. So, I
am using "var" to make the results of "alerts" and "updates" generic before the union.

public IList GetStatusUpdatesAsAlertsByAccountId<T>(Int32 accountId)
