Setting permissions on specific items

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 30, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I'm following a Books Online tutorial for setting up permissions.  I'm on to the 3rd and final stage of the tutorial, the part where I set specific permissions for users to a folder or a report.  (Here's the web page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337494.aspx)

I'm confused about these instructions from that page:

To create a role definition for navigating folders

  1. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to a report server, and then expand the report server node.

  2. Open Security folder.

  3. Right-click Roles and select New Role. The New User Role dialog box appears.

  4. In Name, enter Folder Navigation.

  5. In Task, select View Folders.

  6. Click OK.

Assuming step 1 refers to the ReportServer database, should it be a database role or an application role?  And where do I find "Task"?  There must be several errors in this page.  Could somebody please clarify these instructio

Setting permissions of a specific SharePoint workflow

We have a very simple workflow whereby an document placed in a public library (INBOX) is moved it to a private library (VERIFY) and then deleted. The workflow works correctly when someone who has access to the VERIFY library drops a record into the INBOX library.  However it does not work when the user does not have access to the VERIFY library.

I was told that I need to "set the AD group associated with a specific SharePoint workflow" but cannot find any reference to this in SPD.

Setting permissions to Items/Views in a list

I have a list containing 2 FY's data. I need to make one of the FY year's data as read-only. Can i create a view filtering only this data and make only this view as read-only or do i need to edit permissions of individual items of the filtered FY and set it as read-only. Is there any other way of doing this?

Customized list views and permissions to specific group users

Hi, I have created a custom list with 20 field/columns in wss3.0. I had four user groups(group1, group2,....3.....4) in my site collection with various levels of permissions. I have created four custom views (Group 1 view, Group2 view,...etc)in my list. Each view contains only certain fields out of 20. For example group 1 view contains field 1, 5, 7,10 and 13 of every item in my list.  My requirement is that when a user login, who is a member of group1. he should be able to view only Group1 view fields. He should not able to view other field/columns. I tried creating another field/column called as restricted users and wrote group names in that. In the View edit page I selected " show item when the column 'restricted users' is equl to [Me]. But I did not get it. Kindly help it out any one either programmatically or UI based. Thanks

How to properly configure permissions so users can view, add, edit, and delete list items, but not w

I am trying to figure out how to properly setup security so that it can be configured at the top-level, and then inherited all the way through. Here is what I would like to do: Each user can view, add, edit, and delete list items - but, users cannot modify or delete web part pages. The only way I know how to do this is set Contribute from the top-down, and then go into each Site Pages library and set Read access. The problem is that I have 100 sites, and I was hoping there was a way I could set security at the top, and inherit downward. Rather than having to go into all 100 Site Pages library and set Read access. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance.

Setting sql permissions for web site visitors

Hi all, I have my SqlServer 2005 database at a web host. I recently figured out how to set permissions for the stored procedures (see this link if you face the same problem: http://forums.asp.net/t/1600637.aspx) . Now I wonder: What permissions should I give the web site's visitors? In a stored procedure's Properties window, I have three availabale users, the db owner (the db name), "guest" and "public". My bet is on public.  As far as permission types go, I hev the following available: Alter, Control, Execute, Take Ownership, and View Definition. My guess is that the one of interest is Execute, correct?   In other words, should I set all stored procedures to Execute for public (not that I seem to have the permission to do that myself - I get an error message when I try to alter them)? If so, could I ask the web host to set them globally for me? Or should I only set stored procedure using UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE to Execute?   Thanks a lot for any replies, Pettrer

Delete specific permissions programatically in Sharepoint 2010

I have created a windows application to create custom permission levels(4) in sharepoint 2010 for deployment purpose of our sharepoint site. I am able to create custom permission levels(4) successfully. My requirement is, each time when I run this windows application, I need to check whether those 4 custom permissions levels already exists or not and if they exist, I need to delete those 4 permission levels and recreate them. How can I check whether the site contains these permission levels already and it contains them, how can I delete those 4 only and recreate them?

SQL Management Studio 2008, does not display tables with specific permissions

Prev Reference Question: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqltools/thread/a6166b82-1e1a-4771-952d-a7b54e0b0f23?prof=required

I see the same problem with SQL 2008 Management Studio. I have different schema defined in my database, all the schema permissions work just fine in SQL 2005 but when viewed from SQL 2008. I cannot see tables for which i have given inidividual permissions. I have given SELECT permissions for those tables.

for example.

schema: dbo, schema1, schema2 ....

user: user1 (schema1 owner), user2 (schema2 owner), user3 ...

now i have given SELECT on schema1.table1 to user2

this works fine and i m able to see the schema1.table1 when login as user2 in SQL2005. I have tried your solution for giving "View Definition" permission as well. But this doesnt work in my case.

Seems to be some default permission settings with SQL 2008 ??

Any help/Suggestion will be appreciated

IE9, Site Specific Browsers, and adding your own Jump List Items to Pinned Tabs

Site Specific Browsers aren't a really new idea. In 2005 there was an app called Bubbles I ran for a while that would let you run a website with minimal "browser chrome." Mozilla Prism (né WebRunner) is a Firefox add-in that does a similar thing. Google Chrome includes the idea of Application Shortcuts. The idea of all this is that some web apps are really applications and you think about them as applications. For me, I think of Gmail and Facebook and Twitter and Basecamp as applications not necessarily as browser tabs. The notion of Site-Specific Browsers is definitely arriving. Internet Explorer 9 Beta (IE9) is out now and includes a featured called " Site Pinning " which is a effectively Site Specific Browsers. It's...(read more)

Folder and document specific permissions

My problem is that when I grant a user Read/Contribute permission to a document which is located in a folder in a library where I have not granted access to the user before. When the user is granted a Read/Contribute permission to the document the system creates a restricted permission to the library and to the folder where the document exists. But the problem is that the user can't access the file throught browser or Sharepoint Workspace. User can view the library but do not see the folder where the document is and in SharePoint Workspace the file is visible when syncing but the path to the file is wrong. Allthough user can find and access the file using a fileID.

Audit logs on 2007 - specific items that have been viewed in lists

Hi all

I'm far from being an expert in SP, so please would you treat me like you're responding to your granny ;-)  I'm a basic user, who has set up a team site (one of thousands) within a coropration.

I've created a 'list' to use to post briefings.  I now want to track who has clicked on the briefing to read it, and when they did that.  I've tried creating a custom audit log, and that tells me they visited the list, and that they clicked into an item, just not which specific item in the list.

The 'document location' tells me the visited 'sites/Trainingdelivery/Lists/General message/DispForm.aspx' but the URL to a specific item looks like this 'sites/Trainingdelivery/Lists/General%20message/DispForm.aspx?ID=207'.

How do I capture the specific ID?

Or, is there a way to add something into my list to get users to click to say they've read the message?  my problems with this so far, is I target messages at groups, not individuals, so each item in the list could not be edited to say read, as they would update it for everyone in the group, not just the individual.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Users dont have permissions to core.css on specific site

I have a sharepoint website where somehow the permissions on it got messed up.  Users with read access can get to the site, but when they get thier the site is messed up.  I can replicate the look by disabling core.css on the site.  I checked and the users do have core.css in the source, but If you try to load it you get access denied.

The masterpage is referencing the core.css file that is relative to the site, not the one in _layouts.

How do I fix this permissions issue, It seems liek the only way to access core.css is through sharepoint designer and in there I cant see a way to fix the permissions.

setting up form authentication for a specific folder

I have an "Admin" folder in my application that will include pages that I would not like to have anonymous access to.  When a user attempts to load a page that resides in this folder, I would like to redirect them to a login page. Here is what I have in my config so far.

 <authentication mode="Forms">
      <forms loginUrl="~/Admin/Login.aspx" timeout="2880" >
        <credentials passwordFormat="Clear">
          <user name ="isaac" password="****"/>
What do I need to add to get the functionality I am lookign for. Thanks

Assign permissions on specific list types

Dear folks,

I am wondering if it is possible, with SharePoint 2010, to restrict the users permissions so that specific groups of users can only create lists/libraries from a specific template: currently, if a contributor clicks on the create button, he/she can create several types of libraries/lists (document library, form library, picture library, calendar, contacts, etc.); is it possible to restrict this range of choices so that I can have specific users be able to create only from specific list/library templates (e.g. a user that can create only document libraries but not pictures libraries, records libraries, etc.)?

Thanks a lot

Document Library View - "Folders or Flat --> Show all items without folders" setting not being saved

A view of a document library has a setting under Folders area if the files should be shown in their respective folder or just a flat list of file. If "Show all items withtout folders" is selected, following is my observation:

- Saving the document library as a template and creating new libraries from this template takes this setting into the new library as expected
- Saving the site as a template and creating a new site from template removes this setting from the existing document libraries in newly created sites. If a new document library is created from the document library template, the setting is ON as expected.

This seems to be related to what being discussed here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3574095/hiding-folder-structure-for-a-view-in-sharepoint-2010-list-definition and http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010programming/thread/05e46fc9-cb26-4d00-aaf0-e4b6ee944104

Setting Up Blog Permissions

I created a Blog site for my company. This will be set up on the company intranet. It should be pretty plain blog. There will be no categories (I already removed this).

A few executives will be the only ones who will be creating posts. They need to have access to the Blog Tools on the right side of the blog as well as editing the posts.

The employees should not have access to create posts or edit the posts. They should only have access to create comments.

I can set up the execs with Owner rights.
If I set up the employees with Member rights they will have access to the Blog Tools (which we do not want them to have). If I set them up as visitors they have no rights to comment (which we want them to have). So the question is...How can I do this? Is there a way to add access to comment for visitors or remove access to edit posts(blog tools) for members?

Also, is there a way to remove the "Alert me" and "RSS feed" at the bottom of the blog based on permissions?
