How do you update a Lookup Field from CAML by Name rather than ID

It works if I put the ID of the ListItem in there, but not if I put the name - I need to put the name in. Can anyone help? Thanks. John.

Cross site lookup field value contains the parent list item id and the title field separated by ;# i

Actually we are using third party component for cross site lookup and facing the problem with cross site lookup field value. Its showing the correct value in default list view mode, but in "Edit in Datasheet" and "Export to Datasheet" view cross site lookup field value contains the parent list item id and the title field separated by ;#. I need the actual value in "Edit in Datasheet" and "Export to Datasheet" view as shown in default list value, i dont want that appended parent list item id and separated by ;#.

Is there any OutOfBox soluiton for this. Please suggest me for the same.


Blog Site Lookup Field Changed List Reference


We have a OOB blog site that was working fine until last week. Overnight, the Category lookup field in the Posts list began referencing the Category list from another blog on a different, unrelated sub site. I'll try to illustrate the structure below.

Top Site
	Site A
		Sub Site A-1
			Sub Site A-1-1 (Blog 1)
	Site B
		Sub Site B-1 (Blog 2)

The Posts list in Blog 1 has a lookup field for Category, which now references the Category list from Blog 2--it should reference the Category list from Blog 1.

I came up with a solution to save the site as a template, alter the reference GUID in the manifest.xml, and then re-launch the site. However, this is not a perfect solution because:

  • Upon re-launch of the blog site, all comments and posts lose the previous Created and Modified By information and instead point to my account because I loaded the site. The only way I can think to circumvent this issue would be to modify the list reference while the site is still live, but I'm not sure how to do that.
  • I still don't know how this problem happened and how to avoid it in the future.

I've been researching the problem for several days and I can't find any rhyme or reason for how it may have occurred. I was hoping the community might have some ideas for me

SharePoint Batch Update Auto Increment Field Value


Hello All,

I am making use of SharePoint List Batch Updating methodology in order to update the items in bulk. I build the query dynamically for each and every item using StringBuilder and process the data ultimately using 'ProcessBatchData' Method.

Now, I have a requirement where I have to increment a particular field value in the query while iterating through each item for building the query. How can I auto-increment a field value for each item in the batch query?


Is there a way to update the template of a site?


I am looking for a best practice for managing and applying site design changes.

For instance, in another platform, I could release a site for testing or production use, so content would be added.  At some later date, a change* to the design would be needed and I would take a copy of the design only, make the change and then apply the updated design to the existing site. Content would be maintained but the new design changes would be applied. 

      *A change might mean creating new functionality on an existing element, adding new elements or changing an existing element.

How best should this be done in WSS?

wss2.0 update/delete/hide lookup column that does not display any values


Hi All,

I have a document library that contains a Category column that is a lookup field. This is a default column that is a required field when uploading documents to the document library. The Category column is empty and I am unable to amend, hide, make it not required or delete it.

I have gone to Modify settings and columns -> clicked on the Category field to edit, but there is no option to amend the content or delete it. I am only able to amend the Column name and Description.

Since then, I have amended the column name to eg. Category1 and created a new Category field as a lookup and linked it to the correct list.

The problem I am facing now, is that I cannot hide, delete or make the Category1 (old Category) field NOT required. Either I would like to update the original field to display the correct values or alternately hide, delete or make the column not required.

Please help.

Update field Linq

HelloI want to update one field of one record using linq. I use below codeDim p1 = (From p In db.Products_          Where p.ProductID= 1320 _                 Select p).Single        p1.CategoryID= p1.CategoryID+ 1        db.SubmitChanges()The issue is above query first execute select command and then Update command. and then update all fields of selected record. and this cause overflow to DB.I need to only update one field value. Update a field in a gridview to False on a Button Click

 Hi, Ive got a list of records in a gridview (from an SQLDataSource) where a field value is set to True.  I've also added a "reset" button in a template field at the start of the row in the Gridview. What I would like to do is allow the user to click the reset button on a particular row and 'reset' the true value to 'false' (updating the source data). WSS Lists - Lookup field information missing in Excel 2010

Hi, I've got this xls workbook which contains a two-way synchronized SharePoint list. This WSS list contains columns which are related to other lists: for instance the list we're using is a list of assignments, where an assignment is related to an accounting period. Our server also has another list with all accounting periods. Both lists are related since the assignment list as an accounting period column of lookup type which uses the accounting period list as a source. In previous versions of Excel, the output is that the accounting period field is a combobox populated with all availalble accounting periods. Thanks to that, the user can easily link an assignment to an accounting period by selecting a value in this combobox and synchronizing. This works great with Excel 2003 and 2007, however in 2010 (same workbook, consuming the same lists) related information doesn't appear. The combobox is empty and as a consequence the user gets a data validation error since the value in the cell isn't among available values. Is there something special I should do to enable this feature in Excel 2010? Regards, Carl 

Can I update Project Field value via some javascript?

Hi there, I've a webpart that's designed to update some project field value, this webpart is  located on a Project Details Pages. On this project details page, there is another MS Build-in webpart call Project Field webpart. Now when I clicked the Save ribbon button, the project field webpart will raise some client calls, at the same time my custom webpart will raise a post-back(update value via PSI) call which will kill the client calls..So is it possible for me update the project filed value via some javascript? so I'll no longer raise a postback. Or is it possible for me to capture the client calls event for MS webpart, then I can fired my own PSI code? Thank you,   Regards, Joe

SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflow needs to initialize lookup field value and store it

This is for a governance tracking list. I have two tables: Roadmap and Roadmap Status In Roadmap, there are two fields of interest that are lookup fields to Roadmap Status:Title they are Status and OldStatus When an item is entered in Roadmap, I want to force the initial Status to "Submit" from Roadmap Status. I don't see any way in my workflow to to lookup that item in Roadmap Status and place the pointer (I'm assuming it is a GUID) into the field. The value is also stored in OldStatus to catch changes as I'm trying to force order of status in a few cases but not all. I'm doing it with a Lookup instead of Choice because the business tends to change the terminology they like and this way I don't change it in several places plus it allows them to change it in the list instead of someone changing the list field values. I've seen several places on the forum where people have a similar problem and Lambert Qin has given an answer but it never fits this scenario exactly. Do I have to go back to Choice columns? I only have Designer and would rather not have to learn another tool for a simple SharePoint implementation. Thanks for any help!

Generic ListItem Field Update function?

Just wondering: is there a built-in utility function to set field value for any field type? E.g., SetFieldValue(SPListItem, object value1, optinal object value2, optional object values) You know so boring to update fields considering so many different types. I bet MS guys did one somewhere!? thanks,
