Sharepoint design consideration

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 30, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi there

Im in need of help from more sharepoint experienced admins :) I have a design to consider and would much appreciated your opinion.

The enciroment we are looking is as follow:

Site A:  Main datacentre site with approximately 20 branch offices connected with different (reliably fast ) connections and clients in site of that data centre

Site B: Connected with 8Mb link and having approximately 15 remote offices

What Im looking into is creating a sharepoint enviroment which will be mostly used for hosting IT documents and Wiki lists and to host user personal sites with extensive usage of list like My tasks , My contacts and My calendar connected to user outlook client

The number of clients connected to each site is approximately +- 1000

What kind of topology you would recommend for this ?

Thanks in advance for reply

creating different sub page design template in sharepoint website

I know very little about sharepoint and have outsourced the design of a master page and sub page design for a new website using sharepoint. i received a site master file with all of the necessary images and the home page works just fine. However the file i received for the sub page design template was an ASPX file with the following instructions:

Here I enclosed the inner page layout file. You upload this file by using following instructions. you can change & edit the blue menu section in the master page itself. If I change into modifiable section you need to add the menu in each and every page, otherwise it will show as empty block. Please let me know your comments.

Custom masterpage Layout works fine, but WIDE sharepoint lists flow through, over design

Hello all, and thanks in advance for any help. We've built a custom masterpage layout and so far it works great.  We have specified a layout based on tables that fix the width at 960pixels.  The tables are centered on the screen and have a particular background that is different from the page's background to make the content pop.  It works fine in most cases and still displays all MOSSs dynamic contents like the quicklaunch bar at left, etc.  The theme sort of looks like this : http://www.sharepointpackages.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=268&zenid=a045f5b7dba91fdab94d754569e0b611 The problem is that when a list has too many columns and is therefore wider than the 700 or so pixels that are left over for the placeholders inside the table, the list continues on, but does not affect the table itself.  In other words it appears as if the content was placed OVER the tables in the layout.  This is odd first of all, but it is actually bad in a way, because even if I use styles on the table cells that hold these placeholders, and have the overflow use scrolls, the table ACTUALLY does not see an overflow and the contents continue to run through without activating the scrollbars (they don't even show up).  Can anyone help.  Please, Please, I've been looking at HTML for two days straight now trying to fi

SharePoint 2010 Infrastructure Design

My company is new to SharePoint and we're getting the pieces put together to do a deployment.  I'm looking for comments suggestions for what our setup should look like.

My company is approx. 100 employees

Here are the our primary uses for SharePoint

1. Intranet

2. Workflow

3. Document Management

We have <1 TB of data that will be migrated from current file shares into SharePoint.

My plan is to run this config in a virtual environment (VMware 4.x).  Just a little about the hardware purchased.  HP DL385 G6 with 32GB of MEM.  Two Cybernetic 12T storage devices.  We currently have two other VMware hosts.  ESX 4.x with two Sun NAS heads.  Each with 1.5TB of disk.

I also, unless someone has a strong compelling reason not to, plan to run the SharePoint 2010 install and MS SQL on the same VM.

I would welcome any comments or suggestions.

Thank you,

Multiple Sharepoint site design

Hello All,

My company uses standard license MOSS2007 in our corporate network. There is another network “production” that corporate users do not have access to.

I would like to create an additional site in production network using my existing standard license. The purpose if this is to limit corporate users access or even to see the site.

Is that possible? I don’t have a deep knowledge of a SharePoint so forgive my lingo and please provide details when responding.

Understanding Key Design Decisions in SharePoint 2010 Development

Learn about important design decisions that you must make when you are planning and developing business solutions for SharePoint 2010.

Abstract Factory Design in C# , Vb.NET

Provide an interface for creating families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes

Prototype Design Pattern in C#. Vb.NET

Specify the kind of objects to create using a prototypical instance, and create new objects by copying this prototype

Adapter Design Pattern in C#, VB.NET

Convert the interface of a class into another interface clients expect. Adapter lets classes work together that couldn't otherwise because of incompatible interfaces.

Singleton Design Pattern in C#, Vb.NET

Ensure a class has only one instance and provide a global point of access to it.

Changing the graphics on the home page of a SharePoint site

When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor

Displaying SharePoint lists in Web Parts

When you create a built-in or custom list in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, Windows SharePoint Services creates a Web Part, a basic building block of a SharePoint site, to display that list. These Web Parts are called List View Web Parts. Windows SharePoint Services stores List View Web Parts in the site collection Web Part gallery. (The site collection Web Part gallery is the most central gallery of Web Parts for a work group. By default, the gallery name is the name of the site, such as "Our Team Site Web Part Gallery." )

What is a SharePoint site for?
A SharePoint site is a Web site that provides a central storage and collaboration space for documents, information, and ideas. A SharePoint site is a tool for collaboration, just like a telephone is a tool for communication, or a meeting is a tool for decision making. A SharePoint site helps groups of people (whether work teams or social groups) share information and work together. For example, a SharePoint site can help you:

Coordinate projects, calendars, and schedules.
Discuss ideas and review documents or proposals.
Share information and keep in touch with other people.
