Should I Move to Content Hub or not?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 30, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I am in the process of upgrading from 2007 to 2010 and I have been reading/trying out the content hub syndication. However I am not sure whether I should move to a content hub approach from a feature-managed approach for content types.

I have several portal sites and some custom application sites.  There are some shared content types, and some application specific content types.  Most of the content types are provision using a feature, only a few got modified using the UI.

Here are some of my concerns:

1.) The content type publishing will provision the content types to all sites that are associated with the Managed Data Store.  Say if I use the hub to manage the application specific content type, it will publish the content type to ALL sites (even though only one site needs this content type).

2.) The publishing seems to override the changes made to the content type in all sites (even though it set the content type to read-only, but site owner can go in and unset the read-only setting).  Let say I have a custom document content type for each divisional portal and the divisional lead may adjust the metadata base on their requirement.  If we publish/republish this content type in the hub, the publishing will remove all their changes and there's no way to undo it(?).

3.) If I deploy the content type

Move Single MOSS Content Database to Different SQL Server

We want to mmove the single database of MOSS on Network Test and Development to the Production SQL Server. But MOSS aplication server remains same!

So in this condition it points out for the two database servers at the same time.

Is it possible? Or I need to migrate the all concern databases to the another SQL Server?

Move page in Site Content and Structure alters revision history and makes old content available

This sounds bizzare, I tried it on an OOTB publishing site.

I have a page X in site A. Page X has version 1.0 and 2.0 approved and published, no minor versions anywhere. I choose to move page X to site B. Page X now has revision history version 1.0 (published and available) and version 1.1, which is exactly the same as version 2.0 but no longer visible to the outside world.

So the first problem is that moving a page makes a previously published and overwritten version of the page content available again. If I publish the page it goes to version 2.0, but I have to remember to do this. Also because I approve the page, my user id is associated with the publication of the content (which is sorta ok) but the original author of version 2.0 has now presumably been lost to the ether ... or the green swirling icon of death.

But I don't publish page X because I think "oops I meant to move page Y" and move it back to site A, without first publishing version 1.1. Now I have version 0.1 and 0.2. 0.1 matches the original version 1.0, and version 0.2 matches the original version 2.0, however the best bit is that the timestamps are such that version 0.1 is now checked in after version 0.2.

I then publish the page, I now have version 0.1 and 1.0, where 0.1 matches the original version

SharePont 2003 - Move content database

I have been unable to use Backup Restore because the topology was unsupported.

I have successfully moved the config database.

Now I have backed up and restored the SQL database for the content db and am having trouble finding out how to attach the content database back in to sharepoint.

I normally use SP2007 but am having trouble locating the attach content db stsadm command.  It may even be possible through Central Admin.

Anyone know how this is done?

Do I need to move list template when I migrate a content db?

Good Day,

I am doing an inplace upgrade from moss 2007 sql 05 to 2010 sql 2010.  I have moved the content db over and when I access the site I am getting the following error on the screen:

An unexpected error has occurred. Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. Correlation ID: d39d7e3a-4ba5-4b11-b066-0b544c2cec15 Date and Time: 10/26/2010 9:25:48 AM

Looking through the logs I noticed the correlation ID referenced a SP list that I had been using on sp2007 and the error messages said:

Failed to determine the setup path of the list schema for feature {75A0FEA7-2791-45A2-896F-E538F91032D8}, list template 7140.

Possible mismatch between the reported error with code = 0x8107058a and message: "Feature '75a0fea7-2791-45a2-896f-e538f91032d8' for list template '7140' is not installed in this farm. The operation could not be completed." and the returned error with code 0x80070002.

System.ArgumentException: Feature '75a0fea7-2791-45a2-896f-e538f91032d8' for list template '7140' is not installed in this farm. The operation could not be completed.

So I am assuming I need to follow these directions http://tom-dw.blogspot.com/2010/06/importing-sharepoint

Move MyProfile picture to Content area

In OOB MySite, MyProfile picture is part of the masterpage, is it possible to move the profile picture to contant area (to person.aspx)?

I tried, <SPSWC:ProfilePropertyValue PropertyName="Picture" runat="server" />, but it is not rendering as picture.

Thanks in advance.

SharePoint Tutorial - Content Types

SharePoint content types provide users with a way to manage and organize content in a more meaningful way. It's a reusable of settings you want to apply to a particular type of document in a library or item in a list.

Enabling Users to Maintain SharePoint Content

When SharePoint is installed as a corporate intranet, there is a considerable amount of effort involved in maintaining the content to keep the site relevant. As we discussed in the first few parts of this series, SharePoint has many built-in features to reduce the burden on the site administrator.

Some areas of the site usually contain less-dynamic information. Internal memos and corporate policies are common examples of this information. One option for this information is to post these documents in a document library. Documents in a library are often stored in a few different formats: Word, Acrobat (PDF), or HTML. Each of these formats has its drawbacks.

Application Vs. Content Pages in SharePoint

SharePoint has two types of ASPX pages. One type is the application page, also known as a _layout page. The other type of ASPX page is a content page, also known as a site page. Each of these page types is stored in a different location in SharePoint. When developers create custom ASPX pages, they must decide on the page type.

Content Types in MOSS 2007

In this article I will try to describe the one of the best feature in Microsoft office Share Point 2007 called Content Types.

Content types are simply collection of contents.Each content in a Content type can have different settings.Basically it is a reusable collection of settings which you want to apply to a particular category of contents.

Content Query Web Part missing in SharePoint 2010

If you don't see content query web part listed in the web parts list, this is because you have not enabled "Search Server Web Parts" feature in site collection features. Enable this feature and content query web part will show in the list of web parts.

Unique content within master page based on conditions met

 Hi all-

I would like to present users with unique content based on certain conditions being met as they land on the home page (default.aspx).  The condition logic will be in the VB code behind Page Load event. The content will go in a content placeholder as specificed from the master page.

However, the content change wouldn't be something small (ie making a panel or label visible or not) but rather it will be different HTML,  Divs and databound gridview content.  The HTML content will be stored in the database.

Can someone point me in the right direction for best practices on how to accomplish this?

Passing Linq Statement between master and content page

I usually work with windows forms, and am just starting to work with ASP.Net, so appologies if this is a dumb question!

I have a master page which has a search button on it. The results of this are built up using a Linq statement and if there are any results, I want to display the results in a contents page.

On the masterpage, I have the following code:

Private _res

    Public Overridable ReadOnly Property SearchRes()
            Return _res
        End Get
    End Property

 Private Sub DoSearch()
   'some code to get a linq result

    If res.Any Then
            _res = res
            Server.Transfer("SearchResults.aspx", True)
            'no results
            LabelNoRes.Visible = True
        End If
 End Sub

On the SearchResults.aspx page I have this code.

Dim m As pxSite = CType(Page.Master, MasterPage)
        If m.SearchRes IsNot Nothing Then
            Label1.Text = "Results found = " & m.SearchRes.Count
        End If

m.searchRes is always nothing.

What am I doing wrong here?

Content page control passes as argument to javascript function

Here is the content page:

<%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="JavaDynamicCopyValue.aspx.cs" Inherits="JavaDynamicCopyValue" Title="Untitled Page" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server">
 <script type="text/javascript" >
 function copyValue(input, output )
   ouput.value = input.value;
   return true;
 <asp:TextBox ID="txt1" runat="server" onchange="copyValue(this,document.getElementById('<%=txt2.ClientID%>'))"></asp:TextBox>
    <br />
    <br />
    <asp:TextBox ID="txt2" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>

I got a javascript run time error says output is undefined. if I view source of the page, the txt1 markup became:

<input name="ctl00$ContentPlaceHol

Composite Control which contains arbitrary content defined in .aspx of parent and thier ViewState

I want to write own control which can contain other. And I want to define content of the control in the .aspx file where the control is defined. I have written such control. But now I have issue with ViewState of inner controls of my control. The following samle illustrates the issue: I defined two asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1" and ID="ddl2" One of them is inside of my control and other is outside. When posback is occurred asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1 loses state and becomes empty. How to say ASP.net to store state of inner controls defined by this way?

<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="MyControl.ascx.cs" Inherits="DynamicControls.Controls.MyControl" %>

<div class="box">
    <div class="Header-Left">
        <div class="Header-Right">
            My Control
    <div class="Content">
        <asp:PlaceHolder ID="contentPlace" runat="Server" />
