Cannot connect new Servers to existing MOSS 2007 SP2 farm

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 30, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

We have Single Server MOSS 2007 SP2 farm with DBA managed database server. We have different web applications running and deployed several solutions (SharePoint Learning Kit, Facet Search, workflow extensions, new themes) in the farm.

Recently we wanted to scale out our farm by adding one WFE and one indexing server. I have installed MOSS 2007 SP2 slipstream in the C drive (default location) of both the new servers. Then before running the SharePoint Product & Technology Configuration Wizard I uninstalled MOSS, restated the servers and reinstalled MOSS 2007 SP2 slipstream in D drive.

I didn't add farm administrators group to the local administrator group of the new servers but I added my own account which is a member of farm administrator group to local administrator group. I didn't add Central Admin Webapp pool identity account (which is a service account) to the local administrator group either. But this service account as well as farm administrators group account has dbcreator & securityadmin privileges in the sql server, both t

Upgrading servers in a MOSS 2007 farm from Windows 2003 SP2 to Windows 2003 R2

Are they any particular pitfalls to watch out for here?  We have two front ends in a load balance with an index server, andtwo SQL servers forming a failover cluster.

SQL 2008 servers and MOSS 2007 with SSRS

I need help figuring out the limitations in a multi-database server environment and MOSS 2007 installation with SSRS.  Here is the run down:

  • I currently have MOSS 2007 server with backend on SQL 2005, which also acts as the SSRS server.  In addition I have another SQL 2005 server where business data resides and against which most of the SSRS reports run.
  • Future plan (over which I don't really have a say) is MOSS 2007 with backend on SQL 2008, which will remain to be the SSRS server.  The second SQL server with business data will be migrated to SQL 2008 R2.

Questions: does this architecture requires SSRS 2008 add-in or SSRS 2008 R2 add-in (integrated mode)?  Will there be an issue of building SSRS 2008 reports that go after SQL 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 data mix?

How do use an existing application pool when creating a new web application on Moss-2007 SP2

I have been asked to try and reduce how much memory is being used on our Moss 2007 SP2 farm by reusing existing web application pools. My problem is that when you go through creating a new webapplication and choose the option labled "Use existing application pool" under the section labled "Application Pool - Choose the application pool to use for the new web application" I can only select from a list of three application pools "(Default App Pool (network services), Shared Services, and OfficeServerApplicationPool (NetworkService)" The drop down list does not mention any of the other app pools I have created for previous web applications. My question is this, how do I pick an existing web application pool that I have created previously, rather than keep on creating new application pools for every new web application I create? The farm consists of 3 FE servers 1 search, 1 Query and a Clustered 64bit SQL backend running SQL 2005 all running 64bit W2003 server R2 Thanks for any help you can provide on this. Mr T.    MR T

Help to manage migration from farm WSS 2.0/MOSS 2003 to farm WSS 3.0/ MOSS 2007

we need to move an application (only a site collection/portal site)  hosted in farm using  WSS 2.0(SharePoint Portal Server 2003 integrated with Project Server 2003) to a new farm where is installed WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Portal Server 2007.

We do not care at all about the part managed by Project Server 2003 . We are interested to obtain all lists, items and users information stored in the application (basically all the content part managed by MOSS 2003).

Which is the best strategy to get the job done ?

We have tried these steps to check if our strategy could work but it didn’t:

Join MOSS to existing farm error

Hi all,

I tried to upgrade our MOSS 2007 Database server from 2000 to 2010, but got some error message when I restored the full farm backup.

Then I decided to join MOSS 2007 to the old database server again via the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.

But I got some error message during the configuration wizard:
the error message is : Failed to connect to the configuration database. An exception of type System.ArgumentException was thrown. Additional exception information: Item has already been added. Key in dictionary: '380' Key being added: 380'

Can anyone please help me fix the issue asap?

Moving MOSS 2007 from 2x Dedicated servers to 1x VM - Migration Tutorials?

Greetings all,

We're recently phased out our MOSS 2007 environment (after migrating to MOSS 2010), and need to reclaim the servers from our 2007 install. However, we need to provide access to the old 2007 environment for 9-12 months more.

So, my plan is to migrate the Content DB and FE from their split-environment (two server) solution into a single VM that we can power up when needed.

Knowing that there are a great number of quality tutorials in existence for MOSS 2007, I wonder if someone might recommend tutorials/posts they've found useful for migrating the Content DB and/or FE (this is similar to a disaster-recovery situation in which the FE and DB are rebuilt, no?), beyond the TechNet articles on the matter.

Thanks for your help!

Adding an SP 2010 server to an existing farm. "Failed to connect to the configuration database." dur

I have an existing sp 2010 enterprise server hosting websites and central administration.  I have a seperate sql 2008 r2 server holding the databases.  My goal is to setup another sp 2010 enterprise server to provide redundancy for the websites and central admin.  I believe I am able to accomplish this by adding another web front end to the farm.  On the second server, I install sp 2010, run the config wizard and connect to the config database located on the sql server, however, I am interrupted at step 3 when I am notified of the following:

Failed to connect to the configuration database.
An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown.  Additional exception information: There was an error encrypting or decrypting credentials. Either a credential update is currently being performed, or you must update the farm account credentials on this server before you can perform this task.

[MOSS 2007] Cannot connect to SSL web application / site list

Hi all
I have a quite strange problem with MOSS 2007 and I cannot solve it..

I installed MOSS 2007 SP2 on a single server (Windows 2003 Server SP2 + local SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition) without problems

I created a web application (port 80) and a site list on it without problems; everything is running correctly, I can connect to http://servername and to http://servername/sites/sitename

Then I created a SSL web application (port 443) selecting "Use Secure Socket Layer"; web application is created without errors
I created a new site list on this web application and site list creation is correct

BUT I cannot connect (from the server) to https://servername/sites/sitename or to https://servername
I always have "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error

I can connect to any other SSL website using the same Internet Explorer so I don't think it is a browser problem...

I cannot understand what is the problem; the strange thing is that some months ago I installed another server with the same configuration (web appl on port 80 and web appl on port 443 and sites created on ssl web app) and I had no problem and it is still perf

MOSS 2007 Services Not Starting After Adding 2008 R2 WFE to 2003 R2 Farm

In preperation for our 2010 upgrade we have been migrating our 2003 R2 infrastructure to 2008 R2. Our prior environment was server 2003 R2 DB server running SQL 2005 and one 2003 R2 WFE. We migrated the DB server to 2008 R2 and SQL 2008. The next step was to add a 2008 R2 WFE and then decommision the 2003 R2 WFE.

Setup was successful on the 2008 R2 box. However, in CA the services on the 2008 R2 WFE show "Starting". The CA service is the only service that shows "Started" on the 2008 R2 box. The Document Conversions Launcher Service, Document Conversions Load Balancer Service, Windows SharePoint Services Search and Windows SharePoint Services Web Application show "Starting". The Windows SharePoint Services Administration does not display a status.

What step am I missing to get all of the services running on the new 2008 R2 WFE so I can turn off the 2003 R2 WFE? I don't see anything in the error logs.

Taming the Stateless Beast: Managing Session State Across Servers on a Web Farm

Running a Web farm means managing session state across servers. Since session state can't be shared across a Web farm with Internet Information Services 5.0, a custom solution is required. One such solution using a tool called the session manager is described here. The article begins with a description of the SQL Server database used to store state information, the stored procedures used to update it, and the retrieval of session data. ASP code drives the session manager tool and the COM and COM+ components that run the stored procedures.
