SQL Server Network Interfaces Error 26 - while failing over SQL Server 2008 R2

Before I explain the issue I am facing, I would like to say that I did read the post at  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-specified.aspx but in my case the problem is transient (lasts for approximately two minutes after a failover) so items 1-3 in the list of troubleshooting steps do not seem to make sense. As to 4 and 5, the named instances use non-default ports (2433 and 3433 respectively), so I do not know how to tailor the PortQry command for that. I tried  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433-p UDP -e 1434 and  portqry.exe -n ServerA,2433 -p UDP -e 2434 and it failed both times with a "Failed to resolve name to IP address" while the server was up and serving database requests The same thing happened when I tried it with the failover server as well. ***The issue I am facing*** I am using Enterprise Library 4.1 to connect to a SQL Server 2008 R2 database with a mirror. My connection string itself is as below (with dummy values for all fields): "Data Source=ServerA;Failover Partner=ServerB;Initial Catalog=DBName;User ID=uid;Password=pwd;Connect Timeout=5" Sample .NET code is as below (with modifications to instantiate all variables locally to provide context): SqlDatabase db = new SqlDatabase(ConnectionString); SqlConnection cn = (SqlConnection)db

Visual Studio 2008 Asp.net Development Server Launches When use local IIS is project option

I have a visual studio 2008 asp.net MVC webapp project.  The project is set to use local IIS WebServer. When I run without debugging, it runs just fine.  However when i run with debugging Visual studio launches the Asp.net Development Server on top of IIS.  I would not care if it wasnt for the fact that any time i make a web request to the MVC Site it seems to be creating duplicate requests resulting in a very painful debugging experience. Thanks,Giovanni

Simplify SQL Server 2008 Security

We are in the process of an application rewrite from the DB level up.  Our current DB is SQL2000 and we have just purchased SQL2008 R2.  I've read through various articles regarding Login's, Users and understand the difference.  I am confused about Schema's and their benefits. I have created two Login accounts as WindowsLogin1 and WebLogin1.  I have also created a database called MyDB with two tables T1 and T2.  I’ve also created a WindowsUser1 and WebUser1 user accounts.  So far so go, now for some questions: 1.       If I want WindowsUser1 to have Select, Delete, Insert, Update and Execute permissions on both T1 and T2 tables, should this be done with a role or schema (and how). 2.       If I want WebUser1 to only have Select, Delete, Insert, Update and Execute permissions on the T2 table, should this be done with a role or schema (and how). 3.       If we are using Schema’s for questions #1 and #2, do we construct two distinct schemas? 4.       What about stored procedures?  Should they be added as part of the schema (i.e. Server.MyDB.Schema1.myStoredProc1? 5.       Should the tables T1 and T2 be contained by the schema? 6.       Does adding schema

Domain groups in Cluster Security policy during install of SQL Server 2008

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 on Windows server 2003 and have a question about the stage of 'Cluster Security Policy'.

We need to select 2 groups here, one for SQL server database domain group and the other for SQL server agent domain admin group.

My question is, is it different from service accounts that we used to specify in previous versions? I remember the wizard asking for service account that the sql services need to run under. Is this domain group part a replacement for those individual service accounts? If yes, do I need to have the service account added to a separate group and select that group in this part of 'Cluster security policy'?

Thanks
Satya

About SSAS security on Windows server 2008

Hi Experts:

I set up a role on SSAS cube, and only users in this role can see/process the cube.

And I tried to test it by removing my NT account from not only membership of role on this cube but also administrator group of Win Server 2008R2. The problem is, when I use Excel 2007 to connect the cube on my local PC, I can still see/process this cube...

My NT account is not longer in role's memebership list or Server's administrator group, but why I can still access it...

Any thoughts?  Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Seven reasons to care about SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft begins to fully realize its vision of SQL Server as an information platform and not "just" a database. Hence the main theme for this release -- at least according to Microsoft -- is self-service BI. The PowerPivot plug-ins for Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010 are easily going to make the biggest splash of all the new features, not least because they're the most complete. But then, SQL Server 2008 R2 isn't strictly necessary for PowerPivot for Excel, which works with plenty of other data sources.
