How to get Default value in table to work when NULL in DataSet

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 29, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Is this possible? If the parameter value is NULL in DataSet, the default value is not assigned.

How to deal with NULL values in a SQL table

 Hi all

In order to add/update/delete data from a table I build 2 classes: 1 class containing all the table fields and another class with methods to add/insert/update/delete records. I am learning how to avoid errors when your table must use SQL NULL values. One error is when I call my UPDATE method (see below):

  public void UpdateItem(OcItemConstraintDetails item)
  SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
  SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("ItemConstraints_Update", con);
  cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;

  cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@itemConstraintId", SqlDbType.Int, 4));
  cmd.Parameters["@itemConstraintId"].Value = item.ItemConstraintId;

  cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@path", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 150));
  cmd.Parameters["@path"].Value = item.Path;

if you watch the SQL profiler trace you will see that I am passing a value of 'default' ;so that causes me problems.

exec ItemConstraints_Update @itemConstraintId=1,@path=default

With that said, what are the best practices when your SQL table accepts NULL values and when:
- you are passing an empty value to your stored procedure;

SELECT statement to return NULL by matching data from another table.

Hi,I am fairly new at SQL and I have been struggling for days now trying to find an answer to my problem and i have come to the point where i have run out of ideas and about to give up. I'm hoping someone can put me in the correct path. The problem I have 3 table Table 1 Department" has the following columns: REF, NAME Table 2  "Department_Collection" has the following columns: REF, DEPARTMENT_REF, MANAGER_REF, STORE_REF, ACTIVE Table 3 Store" has the following columns: REF, NAME, STORE_ID  What i am trying to do is to take all the rows in the Department table and get a matching row (DEPARTMENT.NAME, DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF) from the Department_Collection table, if it does not match any then still display DEPARTMENT.NAME but mark DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF as null. I have tried the following select statement but it seem to remove all null values when supplied with a 'storename' SELECT DEPARTMENT.NAME, DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF FROM DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION right outer join DEPARTMENT on DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.DEPARTMENT_REF = DEPARTMENT.REF left outer join STORE on DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.STORE_REF = STORE.REF where STORE.NAME = 'storename' order by DEPARTMENT.NAME   Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

SQLCE table column DefaultValues don't show up in XSD Dataset designer

Using Visual Studio 2008 with SQL CE 3.5, I notice that default values in the creation scripts for the database tables are not reflected in the dataset designer XSD file.  For example, the following SQL script creates the non-nullable table column names "Content" with a default value of 'Image':    "Content" nchar(20) NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Image',But in the column properties of the dataset designer (XSD) panel, this column correctly shows up as non-nullable, but with a DBnull default value as follows:     Name: Content    Allow DBnull: False    DefaultValue: <DBnull>Am I missing something somewhere, or is this a VS bug?  Also, how do I get the XSD file to regenerate after schema changes in the database?  Sqlmetal doesn't do it.Thanks,    -BGood

report builder 3.0 How do I set a dataset property filter to null

seems to be every other imaginable option ...  "NULL" is not accepted, [NULL] returns an error ... this should be obvious!

SSRS 2008 R2 - OnPostBack from ReportParameter - if no default set, throws Value can not be null

SSRS 2008 R2 - OnPostBack from Parameter selection - if no default set, throws Value can not be null java script error. This does not happen with SSRS 2008, only with R2. and only with report parameters that do not have a 'default' set.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not Null Date Default

I'm one of the people that try to avoid nulls when ever possible, usually using defaults.  This is especially important since my apps do a lot of data exchange with external entities often involving flat files.  A flat file can't distinguish between a null or an empty value so to ensure consistancy between data types in both systems I try to make sure every field has some value.  (E.g., If I have a null or empty string in a char field type a CSV flatfile shows ',,' for both.  The target system might interpret this as an empty string or a null; I have no direct control.  This could result in a null in one system and '' in another losing consistancy.  For charactor and number types this is rarely a problem if I communicate that there are no null fields in the data, but for dates it often becomes an issue. Is there a industry standard approach to managing "empty dates" so I can make date fields not null and empty? Thanks

C#: How to add a row to a child table with a DataSet backing?

On the back end I am using XML files, xsd schemas a DataSet(dsThingPrograms) and DataTables. I have a parent ->child table relationship defined through the DataSet designer as such:   things[RFID(pkey), name] programs[ID(pkey/autogen), name, path, thing_RFID(FK references things->RFID)]   In my code I have:   dsThingPrograms.things.AddthingsRow("lala" , "00ffe4" ); dsThingPrograms.things.WriteXml("path\to\things.xml" , System.Data.XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema);   which works fine. However the problem comes when I try to add a row to the Programs table. When I do:   dsThingPrograms.programs.AddprogramsRow("someprog" , "some\path" , <???>);   VS wants me to add a "dsThingPrograms.thingsRow parentthingsRowByFK_things_programs" where the <???> is. I've tried a bunch of things but I could not satisfy that requirement and can't even get the code to compile. What is supposed to go in there to satisfy the FK property?

Default value NEWSEQUENTIALID() doesn't work in VS

I have a column in my .mdf file with the 'uniqueidentifier' datatype. I would like to have it set by SQL Server Express automatically. There are articles on the web that recommend using one of the following commands as the default value:NEWID()NEWSEQUENTIALID()I put this in VS 2010 column properties of my table, in Default Value or Binding. The first command works fine but the second turns out showing an error message 'error validating the default for column xxxx'Any advice on this? I'm I missing much using the first command?Amin

setting schema as dataset to a table

hiii have an already existing schema (in a xsd file). now i need to prepare a report, so in the rdlc page i take a table. now how can i set the schema as a dataset to the table?(i'm getting an error -- "the table 'table1' is in the report body but the report has no data set.  Data regions are not allowed in reports without datasets.").

if NULL in database table - display empty string?

I have a table in an Sql Server Database from which I want to fetch data to a form.

[Headline] [varchar](max) NULL,
[Text] [varchar](max) NULL,

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[Headline] [varchar](max) NULL,

[Text] [varchar](max) NULL,

I want to check both Headline and Text to see if they are null, and if so display an empty string each for them. I've looked at some tutorials but don't yet understand really how to use it. DBNull? DataRow.IsNull? Something else? Can I check both Headline and Text at the same time or do I need do check them separately?

Is there a way to set default style properties for a table or matrix?

We have a company standard we use for fonts, color, background, borders.

Is there a way to set the default font to say 8 pt (vs 10 pt) so that I do not have to change every textbox and column header when adding columns to a table?

Using XML Scheme (XSD) to update empty XML produced Dataset elements with a default value

I'm trying to build a dataset out of an XML File and an XSD scheme file, but I need the Scheme to change some of the data in the XML DataSet.

For example, I have an empty field in the XML file ("<Price></Price>") but I need my dataset to contain a decimal value of 0.0 for this field if the XML tag is empty. I need to somehow change the value in the dataset in these case to 0.0. When trying to use a decimal element in the XSD scheme, I get the "Input string was not in a correct format" error because it's trying to convert an empty string to decimal. Strangely, if this was an int, there wouldn't be an error..

The commands I'm using are simply:

The XSD scheme has the "default" and "fixed" attributes, but as far as I understand, they only take place when the tag is missing from the XML File, not when it is empty.

The ultimate goal is to have a XML generated dataset with the correct decimal type and default value of 0 when the XML has an empty tag.

 Can anyone please help?

Arrange columns from nested table in a dataset that writes into XML file

I have 3 related data tables. I added these tables into a dataset and finally write it to a XML file. But the related columns from table 2 and 3 is appended after all the columns from table 1. How can I have something like:
in a dataset that I write to XML instead of

dataset table adapter commands

how i can disable generation of insert update delete select commands in tableadapter or how i can

remove all of these commands in dataset?

tank u in advance

CTE doesn't work where derived table does

-- This produces: 0 rows affected
WITH upTasks(tStart, tEnd, BLineId, PlanId) AS
 SELECT BLineId, tStart, tEnd, PlanId FROM Tasks_temp
 WHERE PlanId = 19 AND BLineId <= 8
UPDATE Baselines
SET Baselines.tStart = upTasks.tStart, Baselines.tEnd = upTasks.tEnd
FROM upTasks
WHERE Baselines.BLineId = upTasks.BLineId AND Baselines.PlanId = upTasks.PlanId

-- This produces: 8 rows affected
UPDATE Baselines
SET Baselines.tStart = upTasks.tStart, Baselines.tEnd = upTasks.tEnd
FROM ( SELECT BLineId, tStart, tEnd, PlanId FROM Tasks_temp
 WHERE PlanId = 19 AND BLineId <= 8) AS upTasks
WHERE Baselines.BLineI

Update a table from a dataset

I have a data flow task in which I have a dataset containing some rows and now I want to update the rows in a table, not insert them. Is there any way to do that in the task?
