Content Types vs Columns | Resources for newbies

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 29, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I'm a newbie to Sharepoint generally and to Sharepoint 2010 in particular.  What is the difference between Content Types and Columns?  When would I use one over the other? Are there disadvantages/advantages to using one over the other?

Any Sharepoint 2010 "101" tutorials, articles or videos you recommend?

A word about me: I'm not a programmer or an IT administrator.  I'm getting a Masters in Information Management and am working as a student employee to help buid out an intranet site on campus. I understand the power of metadata, but am brand new to Sharepoint.

Thanks for your help!

Duplicate Fields during list creation from content types and site columns

I am trying to create a List in Sharepoint 2010 using Site Columns and Content Types. It results in creating duplicate fields in the list for the Site Columns used. Here is the details description of what I was doing.

I have created two site columns

<Field Type="Number" DisplayName="Start Coordinate" Required="TRUE" EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE" Indexed="FALSE"
Group="QMS" ID="{A3F2D108-11B5-4B49-9633-338D27227E12}"
Name="StartCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

<Field Type="Number" DisplayName="End Coordinate" Required="TRUE" EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE" Indexed="FALSE"
Group="QMS" ID="{06B927BB-C354-4A0A-AE88-9C14E55EAB27}"
Name="EndCoordinate" Overwrite="TRUE" />

Then added these to a new content type I

MOSS 2007 Strange Problem with edit forms, content types and document library columns

I'm having a strange problem and have not been able to track down any useful answers over google.

I inherited a SharePoint site that I am now making some changes to.

I am having problems with one document library.  We had custom edit forms on this document library, which I was finding a pain to maintain so I reset them back to the site definition.  This edit form now shows only those fields that are associated with the Document content type (the only content type - I've deleted the others) on the document library.  There are other columns on this document library that are NOT associated with the content type that I would like to show on the edit form but they are not available when I try to add them to the content type via Settings > Document Content Type > Add from existing site or list columns.  The select columns from drop down is set to List Columns.  The Additional Authors column is just not there.

I CAN see this field on the all items view for the document library, it is there and populated with data.

Setting the Allow Managed content types radio button to NO does not have any impact on which fields are visible on the form- I still see those same fields that have been associated with the Document content type.

Has anyone else seen this or does anyone have any thoughts??

Adding columns to existing content types - not updating

We deployed site columns and content types through xml definitions in features. When we update the content types by adding a new column, new columns do appear in SharePoint Designer 2010 but when pages are created from those page layouts, columns are not visible.

We see this in 2007 and found some solutions but these are code-base. Any alternative that guide us to make changes in the XML or any other file?

Join related data by using content types and site columns?

Hi guys

Say for instance if I have process column and a sub - process column, and if I chose a process I want to only show the relevant sub - processes instead of all. I need to solve this by using content types and site columns. Any ideas, or guides on how I can acheive that?

SharePoint Tutorial - Content Types

SharePoint content types provide users with a way to manage and organize content in a more meaningful way. It's a reusable of settings you want to apply to a particular type of document in a library or item in a list.

Content Types in MOSS 2007

In this article I will try to describe the one of the best feature in Microsoft office Share Point 2007 called Content Types.

Content types are simply collection of contents.Each content in a Content type can have different settings.Basically it is a reusable collection of settings which you want to apply to a particular category of contents.

Add new content types to multiple libraries

We use MOSS for document management and content types for document types (i.e. specification, quote, PO etc.)).  We would like to add additional content types to our libraries.  I was hoping to find a tool that would help me to propagate these new content types ad I am not a programmer.

Content Types

Please could someone enlighten me a little bit on what content types are and how they are used?

Computed Columns in Table Variables or Table Types

I was just looking for confirmation that computed columns can or cannot be used in a @Table Variable or User-Defined Table Type. I'm trying this: declare @testtable as table(  [testcol] as case when [testcol] = '' then 'a' else 'b' end,  [testcol2] varchar(100) ); insert into @testtable select '','someval' insert into @testtable select 'c','someval2' select * from @testtable It all parses fine, but during the first insert an error is returned Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 The data types void type and varchar are incompatible in the equal to operator.
