New Directions in Redirection: Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0 Provides Two New Methods

Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 provides several enhancements to its support for ASP-based Web development, including two new server-side redirection methods: Server.Transfer and Server.Execute. Rather than redirecting requests with a round-trip to the client, these new methods can be used to transfer requests directly to an ASP file without ever leaving the server. While this functionality doesn't replace the Response.Redirect method used by IIS 4.0, you can take advantage of it to implement better application flow control mechanisms and to handle errors more efficiently. The different redirection options are described, along with some tips and tricks for implementing them on your own site.

re: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Technologies

To have access to the webpart "report viewer for sql server reporting services" you can of course install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Technologies. My question though is, does your SharePoint 2007 server have to be running in integrated mode so as to be able to install and use the report viewer web part? Thanks.

How Do I Set Server Administration Privileges on Analysis Services Instance (Microsoft SQL Server 20

Hello. I need to do Association Analysis on a company KPI to determine its key influencers - among other things. This is my first attempt ever and I have installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Add-Ins for Office 2007. I also have SQL Server 2005 installed on my laptop. I chose the "Use an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services that I administer" and launched the Server Configuration Utility. I am advised that I will need server administrator provileges on the Analysis Services instance that I am about to configure. The defaulted server name is localhost. Indeed I get an error message when I try to advance: "Unable to discover metadata on the server 'localhost'. User 'Maigida-PC\Maigida' needs to be administrator of the server to run the configuration tool" Help me please: How Do I Set Server Administration Privileges on Analysis Services Instance to myself on a local server on my laptop? I need to master DM in Excel 2007. Deep regards.

Client Application Services - Role service cache time out bug

Hi All, For people using Client Application Services with WPF, be aware of this bug. You can configure the "cache time out" for roles to be fetched again from the service. (In the visual studio dialog, Properties -> Services -> Advanced) This means the roles are cached on the client (in a file). If the application asks for roles again, they are not fetched again for "cache time out" time. When you set this value, it goes into your App.config, transformed into seconds. So if you choose 1 minute, the App.config has: cacheTimeout="60".   However, when using the ClientRoleProvider (for instance to do something like clientRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser("SomeUser")), this cacheTimeOut is interpreted in Minutes, not seconds! To prove my point, check ClientRoleProvider.Initialize method:   string temp = config["cacheTimeout"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(temp)) _CacheTimeout = int.Parse(temp, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture);   Later on, in ClientRoleProvider.GetRolesFromDBUser (what's in a name?), you see: _CacheExpiryDate = cd.RolesCachedDateUtc.AddMinutes(_CacheTimeout);   Testing also shows this behavior. So be aware, and always put the value in minutes in your App.Config!   Regards, Koen

Same Role provider (ASP.NET Services database) for various WCF services

Hi there,

Service Authetnication

Have configured WCF service to implement authentication using AD(Active Directory), when a request comes from the client it is authenticated aginst active directory and either allow access or deny based on the credentials passed to the service.

Authorization using ASP.NET Role provider

Have implemented the method level authorization using SecurityPermission attribute, which checks the role data in ASP.NET Services database( in other words Membership database) against aspnet_roles, aspnet_Users_InRoles tables to allow / deny access to particular method.

It works well with single instance of service, where the request is from mutliple client applicaitons.

In the above implementation, WCF service is configured to use ASP.NET Membership database to implement authorization to authorize access to particular methods.

Would like to know if it is feasible/best practice to utilise the same instance of ASP.NET Membership databse to implement Role based authorization on number of WCF services.
