BITS: Write Auto-Updating Apps with .NET and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service API

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Both the .NET Framework and Windows have some very interesting APIs for creating applications that are capable of updating themselves automatically over a network. There are many advantages to writing your application to update itself like Windows Update does, including convenience for your users, from easier maintenance to network administration. Automatic updates require attention to factors such as discovery, security, and file replacement. In this article, the author covers the BITS API as well as a number of features of the .NET Framework that take care of these facets of auto-updating using the same facilities that the Windows Update uses.

Windows Sockets 2.0: Write Scalable Winsock Apps Using Completion Ports

Writing a network-aware application isn't difficult, but writing one that is scalable can be challenging. Overlapped I/O using completion ports provides true scalability on Windows NT and Windows 2000. Completion ports and Windows Sockets 2.0 can be used to design applications that will scale to thousands of connections. The article begins with a discussion of the implementation of a scalable server, discusses handling low-resource, high-demand conditions, and addresses the most common problems with scalability.

User Profile Service account Write to AD Permissions

I followed this guide here (http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx) to provision the UPS service in sharepoint 2010. I found the guide very helpful and informative. Everything is working correctly except for the write back to AD I've followed the steps and have assigned the listed permissions to the UPS service account, however I still get permissiong errors in the FIM GUI Our AD is running in a 2008 environment but is in 2003 mode, so I made sure to add the UPS account to Pre Windows 2000 Compatible access built in group and restart the server so that the new group settings would take affect. Do I need to reprovision the UPS service or something? Or am I missing something completely. (Hopefully the latter lol!) Thanks RKB

Intermittent timeout calling ASMX web service yet Upload data transfer completes OK

I'm calling my webservice from a web page and getting a timeout despite setting very high values in my web.config files. This occurs intermittently when the file is usually pretty large but yet the file is still getting uploaded completely (as if the timeout DID NOT occur). Here is a function in my .aspx file which calls my ASMX proxy class:
private void UploadFile(HttpPostedFile postedFile, string fileNameOnly)
// create an instance of the proxy class to talk to our service; calling it client:

How to improve the speed of data transfer in WCF service using basicHttpBinding

Hi All,

I come across an issue in transferring 2MB file into the server through WCF service from my Windows Mobile client using 3G connection. Application takes around 2 minute to upload fine into server.

It’s an image file is there any way I can improve the speed.

I used basic httpBinding and WCF Service accepts file as byte array.

E.g. Operation contract.

Int UploadData(byte[] inImage)

Thanks ,

Auto updating Dataview in SPD

I have a Dataview that I made on a custom web part page and a BDC list on the same page. I have a connection between the 2 that query the BDC list on clicking a row in the DVWP. I need the DVWP to update every 10 seconds. I had a user control setup that uses UpdatePanel and a trigger to do it but could not create a connection with the user control. I just need the DVWP updated. I have looked at different sites that explain using UpdatePanel but everytime I use it in SPD, I break it. any suggestions?
