BackUp and Restore through Central Administration fails

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi,

I took the backup through Central Administration.

Now I installed MOSS as Server farm installation on 2 different servers.I mean, one is Application server and the second one is the Database server.

While Restoring the Backup :

I could not connect to the Database server.

But if I restore the same backup on a stand alone/Single server installation of MOSS, I could succeed.

Hence for a server farm installation of MOSS on 2 different server, Why I could not connecct to the Database server, while restoring ?

Is there any special configuration I need to configure for Database server Access.

can anybody tell me, the step by step restore process of a backup through Central Administration for the Server farm installation(2 different servers in the farm.).

Backup through Central Admin fails; works using stsadm

Hi, I'm trying to schedule automatic backups of my SharePoint 2007 site.  I wrote a .vbs script that does the backup with the following line:   objShell.Run "cmd /c stsadm.exe -o backup -directory """ & BACKUP_DIR & SITE_DIR & """ -backupmethod full -item ""Farm\Windows SharePoint Services Web Application\SharePoint - SharePointSites"" > """ & CURR_DIR & "log.txt""", 0, True   I ran the vbs script from the command line and everything worked fine.  I used the Windows Task schedule to run the script as a scheduled task.  The script ran fine and the backup completed successfully (according to the logs), but now if I go to the Central Admin page and try to do a restore, I get the error:   The backup/restore job failed. In order to rerun the backup/restore the timer job must be deleted from the Timer Job Definitions page. Failure Message: Backup or restore is already running.   The odd thing is I can do another backup or restore using stsadm at the command line and it works fine.  I can also run the scheduled task to do another backup and that works fine too.  I just can't do any backups or restores from Cetnral Admin anymore.   Any suugestions or ideas? Thanks. -Cynthia

BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM against an encrypted database - restore fails

I have five databases sitting on a new SQL 2008 R2 server.  The databases originated on SQL Server 7, went through both a SQL 2000 and a SQL 2005 upgrade, and last month were migrated to this new SQL 2008 server.  All five databases are in SQL 2005 compatibility mode.  All five databases are using SQL 2008's full database encryption.

Over the weekend, I changed the page verification of these databases from "torn page" to "checksum".  Nightly full backups were completed on Sunday night, and successfully restored to our reporting and hot-standby servers.  Yesterday, I added the WITH CHECKSUM keyword to the backup jobs.  Nightly full backups ran last night, completed successfully.  The restores of those same backups to reporting and standby FAILED, with several assertion failure messages.

Today, I created a brand new database, in SQL 2008 compatibility mode and "checksum" page verification.  BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM produces a restorable backup.  I then enabled encryption on that database, and did the same BACKUP WITH CHECKSUM operation.  The resulting backup cannot be restored, NOT EVEN on the same server.  The restore appears to complete, giving the normal output stating how many pages it processed, but the "recovery" portion of the restore throws an exception.

Sharepoint SQL migration using restore from central admin backup

I have a SharePoint 2007 farm which consists of a single application server and a separate SQL box.

The DB is SQL 2000. The objective is to upgrade to SQL 2008.

I have read countless articles on how to migrate the DB server from 2000/2005 to 2008. There does not seem to be a consensus on which approach is best.  One approach I do not see much written about is one I tried and successfully implemented.

What I did was simply take advantage of the built in backup feature in the central administration site. I performed a full backup of the site and copied the back up to a development server in a different domain.

I then created a new farm in the development environment and pointed to a 2008 SQl database. The only databases in the farm after I created the farm were the config_Db and central administration DB.

SQL Server Backup and Restore (video)

Restore your full backup, then run a few queries before you keep restoring transaction logs. Brent shows how to use the Standby option for restores.

In this five minute video, Brent demonstrates how to do it by creating a database, populating data, and then showing what disaster recovery is like by doing RESTORE WITH STANDBY.

Turning off Crawling the Central Administration site?

There are 2 places that "Search Visibility" can be set on WSS3 servers:

Default > Site Settings > Search Visibility

Central Administration > Site Settings > Search Visibility

What are the ramifications of "hiding" the Central Administration site from search?

SMO Backup and Restore Help

Hello Friends, I am new to SMO, Till now I have only worked with Selct,Insert/update Queries.. Now I want to Implement some backup and restore feature for my application. I looked at some documents of SMO and found it is possible using SMO. First of all I will explain my situation. My application wants to store data belongs to different companies(which is maintained with in application) in to single database server, Sql server 2008. I am planning to use Partition Scheme function and create filegroup for each company. Advantage here is, taking backup of each company will be easy. I am generating primary key for each table without taking into consideration of companies. In other words Particular table's ID 1,2 belongs to Company A, 3 Belongs to Company B and 5 belongs to Company A... But these data will be split in to Different filegroups using Company ID.(horizontal partitioning) Ok... Now the Problem.. My backup for a particular company was taken successfully. Now I want Restore function. When I am trying to restore this backup to somewhere else. Target database may or may not contain Companies installed. When Restoring Will there be any Primary key Violation? I know one solution is to generate primary key by taking into consideration Company Id. But this will cause a complete rewriting of code, as it contains lot of edit/delete queries.  I want to know, whether the

SQL2008 - Cannot Restore a new database from a full backup of a different one, database in use

I am trying to restore a brand new database from a copy of another one and am encountering an error message stating: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The file <Backup source database file location> cannot be overwritten.  It is being used by database <Backup Source Database>. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) I am running the Restore procedure with the REPLACE option and am wondering why it is stating that the source database is the database in use when I am trying to restore and overwrite a completely different database. This issue happens when running the replace both in C# using SMO and when manually restoring with SqlServer Management Studio Interesting note is, the original source database is created / deployed using a database project within VisualStudios 2010 and then deployed to SqlServer through VisualStudios. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Thanks in advance for any help!

What happened to the backup and restore classes in namespace Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo vers

I do not see these two classes in version 10 of this namespace and I am not finding any documentation explaining what happened to them.

Upgrading platform - Report Services DBs backup /restore

We are upgrading the platform for our production SQL 2005 server.  Of course, I have done this task numerous times....however this is the first time I will be dealing with Reporting Services.  I am concerned that it may not be a simple backup databases and then restore on new server, because of the encryption keys. What do I need to do ? Thanks!

Cannot Restore from backUp

Hi,     I am using SQL Server 2008. I made a backup of a database. its size is about 1000MB. I did a verify the backup and it does not give me any error. I copy the backup file to my Machine(Development Machine). I am using the exact same version of SQL server. When I try restoring from back i get the error. TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The media family on device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\dcaRms1-05Bkp.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) When I tried doing in from code: just a Restore Verifyonly I get this error: Msg 3241, Level 16, State 7, Line 1 The media family on device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\dcaRms1-05Bkp.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 VERIFY DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I really do not understand. It is not like I am trying to restore the backup created in 2008 to 2005 version. and I am pretty sure the backup file is not corrupt. I can restore it in the same database.

Can Web Services be blocked by Central administration ?

I am a Site Collection administrator. I am thinking of using Web Services (_vti_bin/Lists.asmx etc.,) and display some data regarding Lists, Permissions, SubSites on some pages. My question is whether accessing these web services at site level can be blocked by central administration or not. If they cannot be blocked, then I would like to go forward on what I have mentioned above. Can anyone please clarify. Thanks.

Central Administration no longer accessible by any account after changing Farm Account in SharePoint

I have a problem, that I no longer can access Central Administration Website, only the Sharepoint itself. I was running installation of Sharepoint 2010 Server with administrative account ImTheAdmin, who is a Domain Admin in the MYDOMAIN domain. Using ImTheAdmin I installed Sharepoint 2010 on one of the Windows 2008 R2 member servers. Besides that, I made ImTheAdmin the primary administrator of the Sharepoint. ImTheAdmin became the only user of this Sharepoint 2010 server after installation.  I installed everything on one box with default installation settings. I used builtin SQL server, not Standard or Enterprise. What then happened is: Using ImTheAdmin account, I opened Central Administration Website, and it said, that I need to change the Farm Account, as the account for Farm was the default one (I think it was network service). So I created a regular domain user in AD Users and Computers called MYDOMAIN\SPFarmAccount. Then using IE, I went to the Central Administration Website page, which is meant for changing farm account usernames. I put in MYDOMAIN\SPFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pressed Change. Browser worked for a while, and after that nothing seemed to work. Neither my Sharepoint, nor Central Administration website. When going to Central Administra

I thought, Windows 2000 is long gone, so I didn't pay much attention, I think everywhere the account SID is important. I don't know if that is the real problem with my failure later, but it might be one of the reasons. I put MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pre
