Do cleanup maintenance plans that are linked to a backup job work for other backup jobs as well?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

I have a job that backs up transaction logs and then there is another job within that plan that cleans up .trn files that are older than 48 hours. This job points to the directory where the transaction logs are backed up to. I just created a seperate maintenance plan to backup transaction logs for a different database. Will the cleanup job for the first backup job also clean up the logs from the second plan or do I need to create another job to cleanup the logs from the second backup job. My confusion is that the first backup job has specific databases that it is backing up and I'm wondering if that limits what the cleanup job does as well.

Best Practices for SQL Backups - Snapshots vs Replay Manager vs SQL Maintenance Plans vs Backup Exec

Hi, can anyone give me some information on the best practice for backing up sql backups?  For example, is it better to use snapshots vs SQL Maintenance plans, etc.  Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Maintenance Plan Backup Failing Time to time

See ERRORO Below: I am using SQL Server 2008 64 bit enterprise edition and backing up on network drive. Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs

According to John Ferringer, i'm moving this post from "SharePoint Products > SharePoint Products and Technologies Forums > SharePoint - Setup, Upgrade, Administration and Operation (pre-SharePoint 2010) > Backup/restore Failed don't exist timer jobs".

Hi Folks, i'm recieving this message when i try to make a site collection/farm/site backup "The backup/restore job failed because there is already another job scheduled. Delete the timer job from the Timer Job Definitions page, and then restart the backup/restore job.". I'm going to central administration/monitoring/timer jobs/check jobs status but i can not find anything.

My scenario:

- W2008 R2 EE

- MOSS 2010 EE

- MOPS 2010

Maintenance Plan - Full Backup

Hey all

I am running a maintenance plan (Sql Server 2008 Enterprise) every night at mid-night. All the plan entails is doing a full backup of one database (about a 3GB database). We are getting timeouts on our site at exactly that point when the database is being backed up and they last up to 20min. I was under the impression that doing backups this way does not take the db down? Or am I wrong about this?

Has anyone else experienced this and if so what steps did you take to rectify it? Sorry if I have not provided other information, just let me know and I will give it to you.

SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Plans - Reporting And Logging Does Not Work

I have a maintenance plan built on a SQL Server 2005 instance that rebuilds indexes, rebuilds statistics, checks for database integrity, performs a maintenance cleanup, and performs a history cleanup.  This job runs once per week.

In the "Reporting and Logging" section I have the following options:

- Generate a text file report is checked

- Create a new file is selected

- A valid destination folder is identified

- Send report to an email recipient is checked

- A valid agent operator is selected

- Log extended information is checked

The job seems to complete successfully and a report is created and emailed, but the only information in the report is as follows:

Quest SLSSQLMaint Utility.
Logging on to SQL Server 'DEVSQL01' with Windows Authentication
Logged on to SQL Server 'DEVSQL01'

[1] Delete old text report files...
[1] Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 0 secs.

[2] Send DBMail or SendMail report file....

[2] Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 1 secs.

End of maintenance plan 'DB Maintenance Plan (No Backups) [DB Maintenance]' on 9/29/2010 8:40:49 PM (Success)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\MSSQL\Binn\slssqlmaint.exe Process Exit Code: 0 (Success)

Where is the information about the rest of the maintenance plan?&nbs

Backup Maintenance Plan Failure SQL Server 2005

Hi All,
I have three maintenance Plans Full, Differential and Transaction Log backup. Full and Transaction Log backup plans are working fine. In the all the maintenance plans I am taking backup of almost 60 databases.

The problem is with the differential backup plan. The backup plan is keep failing with the following errors:

FailedSad-1073548784) Executing the query "declare @backupSetId as int
select @backupSetId = position from msdb..backupset where database_name=N'MY_Database' and backup_set_id=(select max(backup_set_id) from msdb..backupset where database_name=N'My_Database' )
if @backupSetId is null begin raiserror(N'Verify failed. Backup information for database ''Giants_Security_4'' not found.', 16, 1) end
RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM  DISK = N'E:\\MSSQL.1\\MSSQL\\Backup\\MY_Database\\MY_database_backup_200808240500.DIFF.BAK' WITH  FILE =

Backup maintenance plan fails due to space in t-sql statement...

I have a maintenance plan that  is failing on one backup. I went into look at the t-sql code and it shows a space after the database name. I copied the t-sql code to a query window | removed the spaces and the backup ran fine. My question is how do I remove the spaces for this one backup. The other servers in the maintenance plan work fine.

Note: I copied this part out so you can see "N'T:\SQL Backup\PackagingForms \" I removed the space after PackagingForms and it worked!

t-sql code:

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir N'T:\SQL Backup\PackagingForms '
BACKUP DATABASE [PackagingForms ] TO  DISK = N'T:\SQL Backup\PackagingForms \PackagingForms _backup_201010281050.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT,  NAME = N'PackagingForms _backup_20101028105056', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 10
declare @backupSetId as int
select @backupSetId = position from msdb..backupset where database_name=N'PackagingForms ' and backup_set_id=(select max(backup_set_id) from msdb..backupset where database_name=N'PackagingForms ' )
if @backupSetId is null begin raiserror(N'Verify failed. Backup information for database ''PackagingForms '' not found.', 16, 1) end
RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM  DISK = N'T:\SQL Backup\PackagingForms \PackagingForms _backup_201010281050.bak'

Troubleshoot Maintenance Plan (backup) Long Running

Sql Server 2005 SP2
Small databases

I have a maintenance plan to perform CHECKDB, Reindex, Backup, Cleanup tasks in that order. Lately, its been running very very long. For more than 2 days. Initially it was because of a bunch of reasons i.e. disk ran out of space, TRN and BAK jobs running on top of each other, etc. But now, I created a new plan with just backup. Even that runs forever. Just simple backup, nothing else (small database).

Now, if I create a job with T-Sql command and run it, it runs fast in under a second. But if I create a Maintenance Plan on the same database it takes forever. How do I troubleshoot this? I do not get any errors because, I stop the job after running for a few hours.

Any ideas,

SQL Server VSS Writer -Differential Backup - Does it even work?

I have been trying to develop a tool to do backup/restore of MS SQL Server using SQL Server VSS Writer. I can not get the differential backup working! I am just curious as to whether anyone ever made differential backup using VSS. Here is what I have been doing,
1. Create a full backup and store files and the Backup component document associated with it.
2. Update the tables in the database.
3. Create a new backup by setting 'SetBackupState' as VSS_BT_DIFFERENTIAL
4. Now when adding the existing components to the Backup Component Document, I find the component's time stamp from the document in step 1, and then invoke it with 'SetPreviousBackupStamp'
5. Now after the snapshot is taken, I go through each of the component and invoke 'GetPartialFileCount' API. This always return the value 0. I am assuming if there is a change in an existing component, it should give a value greater than 0.

Am I missing something here? Do we need to start SQL Server VSS Writer using certain parameters or something? I tried different configurations including (Windows Server 2008/ SQL Server 2008)

Upgrade SQL Server - way to backup the SQL jobs

Our database server has been used for more than 5 years and we plan to upgrade..

Currently we have lots databases inside the database server and many jobs running daily. But we have no idea on how to backup/copy all the SQL jobs to the new database server.

Kindly advise any way to upgrade the database server without losing any db, views and sql jobs?

**Currently alot of sql jobs running to update the views in order to generate the business reports.

Maintenance Plan Backup Database Task timeout

I am using SQL Server 2008.  I am trying to create a new Maintenance Plan.  I create the plan, and then add a backup database task to the plan.  When chosing Databases to backup, if I chose "All Databases" or "All user databases", and then click OK, the UI hangs for a while, then eventually, it comes back with an unhandled exception.  If I look at the details, I see the following exception:

Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc.EnumeratorException: Failed to retrieve data for this request. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

If I chose the option "Choose databases" and pick databases to backup, things seem to work just fine.  New databases on are added to this server on a regular basis.  I do not want to maintain the list of DBs to backup.  Any suggestions?

SQL Server Backup and Restore (video)

Restore your full backup, then run a few queries before you keep restoring transaction logs. Brent shows how to use the Standby option for restores.

In this five minute video, Brent demonstrates how to do it by creating a database, populating data, and then showing what disaster recovery is like by doing RESTORE WITH STANDBY.

MOSS 2007 Backup Strategies

I saw some backup strategy best practices papers stating you could backup the databases and site content separately, but was told by Microsoft that if you do that, and have to do a bare metal restore you will not be able to recover because the site content and database will be out of sync. Does anyone have a proven DR process for MOSS 2007 that they can share? We have Commvault in house right now, but are using it only to backup the databases and file system separately. Should we be using the built in sharepoint backup stdadm(sp?) tools?
