Web Config - custom errors.

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I'm thinking about creating my first custom errors in an application.

I've been looking through a few sites and i'm having a problem getting my thoughts around the process. It seems like it should be a fairly easy thing to do, yet these sites go on and on about this and that.

Does anyone have a simple example that I can build on...or a site they used when you first created your own?

Is this correct so far:?

Create a page to display the errors. This page name goes in to the 'DefaultRedirect' attribute in the customerrors tag in the Web Config.

Then when the page is called....how do I display the error?  And how is the error code captured and displayed?

Thanks  (Vs 2005  VB)

"Mixed mode assembly is built against version 'v2.0.50727'.... " issue and use custom config file

Hi, My Winform applilcation has used Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common namespace(assembly :Microsoft.Sqlserver.smo.dll/Microsoft.Sqlserver.ConnectionInfo.dll) and developed in .NET 4.0. Problem:Application is throw an exception when it tries to use above assembly reference methods. Full error text is shown below, "Mixed mode assembly is built against version 'v2.0.50727' of the runtime and cannot be loaded in the 4.0 runtime without additional configuration information. " Error is resolved when we include "app.config" file with below code, <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.0"/> </startup> </configuration> But, I need to keep configuration file as "renamed.config" and not to include app.config file as of the project requirement.I have set configuration file as "renamed.config" file using below code, //AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetData("APP_CONFIG_FILE", "d:\\reanmed.config" ); I have also included <Startup> element in this "renamed.config" configuration file and removed the app.config file.But it raise me below error, it always expect app.config file with <Startup> element to resolve this iss

Overriding web.config in sharepoint webpart/using custom membership in web part

I'm developing a web part for MOSS 2007. The web part is being deployed to a web application which utilizes forms-based authentication, and role/membership providers to control users. The membership table has been edited to include addition user info (I am aware, that this isn't the best way to handle additional user, i.e. profiles etc., however, this is a requirement from another department). Since my web part needs to access this information, I was thinking of implementing a custom membership provider. So far I've followed: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6tc47t75.aspx and I've got my custom membership class, and a very stripped down membershipprovider-class. But how do I enable/use this membership provider in my web part? I've tried creating a simple web.config in the "WebPartCode" folder of my solution, next to my webpart code file, with connection string and membership provider tags. But I don't even really know how to build/reference/use the membership provider itself, so I don't know what else I need to do. I've built a C# class library project with the two classes (membershipprovider and custom membershipuser) and compiled it and installed it in the global assembly cache - is this correct? and how do I access them from here? Hope someone can help

VS 2010 Isolated Shell, WPF Designer & Custom Controls produces some assembly reference errors

Hello, i currently try to use the VS 2010 isolated shell for providing a custom WPF editor.As described in the headline the WPF designer is 'partly' not able to find all assemblies (details below). After some research the only similar problem description i found here . Unfortunately I could not find any solution for my problem there. These are the steps i have successfully finished: - create a vs isolated shell application with some basic extensions (some tool windows) - create a Custom Project template based upon the MPFProj project (as describe at: here ) - Add the needed reference for custom control in project template - Create and edit XAML markup (no code behind, only markup) - Compile and run XAML Now, the following problem occurred (as a step by step description): - I add a custom control to the toolbox using the context menu "Choose Items..." (ok ) - I drag this custom control from the toolbox into the WPF designer view (ok ) - The custom control is rendered correctly and no assembly reference errors occurred (ok ) - I hit the F5 button in order to execute the XAML markup -> The application is starting correct and looks as exspected (ok ) - I close the running application (window) -> Now the WPF designer view seems to refresh and 'tells' me that an assembly (the one of the custom control) could not be found (error!!! ): There error text is: "Th

custom role manager, type error in Web.config

Hello everybody.I am developping a role provider for AD.I have copy in the root directory of my project in VS2010 the file MyAdamRoleProvider.vb which is an example of a book.I have declared in my web.config the role provider like this: <connectionStrings> <add name="ADService" connectionString="LDAP://webcubedev/OU=webcube,DC=wcdev,DC=local"/> <add name="ADServiceRole" connectionString="LDAP://webcubedev/OU=webcube,DC=wcdev,DC=local"/> </connectionStrings> <system.web> <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider="ActiveDirRP"> <providers> <add name="AspNetActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider" type="MyAdamRoleProvider" connectionStringName="ADService" connectionStringRoleName="ADServiceRole" /> </providers> </roleManager> When I debug, the error is "Impossible de charger le type 'MyAdamRoleProvider'"In english : "can't load 'MyAdamRoleProvider' type"I don't see what is wrong, can you help me?

Web.config for Custom Membership Provider

I am trying to set-up the connection strings to my Membership Provider. I am using the Sql server database and not the default aspnet_db. Iam giving the Fully Qualifying namespace+class in my "type"  and it still throws an error msg "connection string cannot be blank". Web.config: < < < < membership defaultProvider="CustomMembershipProvider">providers>clear />add connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" requiresUniqueEmail="false" maxInvalidPasswordAttempts="5" minRequiredPasswordLength="6" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" passwordAttemptWindow="10" applicationName="RavLoginApp" description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the local Microsoft SQL Server database" name="CustomMembershipProvider" type="MyNamespace.CustomMembershipProvider" />  </providers> </membership <connectionStrings > <remove name="LocalSqlServer" /> <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=;database=MyLocaldb;uid=xxxxx;pwd=xxxxxx" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> <

SSIS custom task calling web services response errors.

Hi             I have some code within a .Net 3.5 library which call a web service.  The web proxy class was created using WSDL command line tool.  Also the library is wrapped within .Net console, for testing the library works, and SQL Server Integration Services custom task, which is intended to use so that it will be part of the ETL process.    If I run the SSIS custom task and console application on a Windows XP everything works as expected.    However I am currently facing a problem where the response from the web service is not being interpreted correctly when running within the SSIS custom task on windows server 2008 R2, whereas the response from the web service is correctly understood when running the library within console application on the same server.    Has anyone come across this problem before or know any issues with SSIS and .Net libraries which call web services?

Custom errors section does not redirect 404 errors

Hi,I managed to secure all applications on my server with the custom errors script section mentioned in Scott Gu's blog post. All but one website...That particular website redirects errors for all error codes to the same page, except 404 errors. For 404 errors it shows a standard 404 error page that seems to come with IIS 7.The custom errors section looks like this:<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="/Error/ServerError/500" /> Other sites on the same server do not have this problem. Please advise.

Custom membership provider not returning values from my web.config

I created a custom membership provider in my ASP.NET 4.0 web site, stored  in App_Code, and referenced in my web.config.

However, it doesn't appear to be pulling values out of web.config during initialization.

The code was taken from http://www.asp.net/general/videos/how-do-i-create-a-custom-membership-provider, and the only modifications were changing "connectionStringName" here to the name of my connection string:

    Dim ConnectionStringSettings As ConnectionStringSettings = _

The connection string always comes back as nothing in this line:

    If ConnectionStringSettings Is Nothing OrElse ConnectionStringSettings.ConnectionString.Trim() = String.Empty Then
      Throw New ProviderException("Connection string cannot be blank.")
    End If

No matter what I change the password format to in web.config, the default value here is always used:

    Dim temp_format As String = config("passwordFormat")
    If temp_format Is Nothing Then
      temp_format = "Has

Convert user.config to database storage via my custom settings provider

I've created my own custom settings provider to save user settings (formerly in the user.config) to a database. To point the particular settings that are to be saved to the database I specified

for each property to point to the BlobSettingsProvider instead of allowing them to default to the LocalFileSettingsProvider.
Now I need to convert existing user.configs to save to the database on the fly - a one time conversion. Because I've now specified the properties to use the BlobSettings provider they can no longer access the local user.config.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how best to accomplish this conversion (i.e. read the local user.config and populate the BlobSettingsProvider). The app can be run as a ClickOnce installed app or as a simple .net app - finding the correct local user.config looks to be a problem.
Thoughts, ideas,...?

"significant whitespace" build errors in workflows with custom designers (with attached sample proje

I'm using some custom designers in a workflow and occasionally get a combo of errors that don't make much sense.

On the designer surface, the following error is shown:

Cannot create unknown type '{clr-namespace:HurrDurr.Activities}MyActivity'.
System.Xaml.XamlObjectWriterException: Cannot create unknown type '{clr-namespace:HurrDurr.Activities}MyActivity'.
   at System.Xaml.XamlObjectWriter.WriteStartObject(XamlType xamlType)
   at blah blah yadda yadda...

In the error list, I get the following error:

Error 1 XC1020: Build error occurred in the XAML MSBuild task: 'The value ' ' contains significant white space(s) but "xml:space = preserve" cannot be written down on the member '{clr-namespace:HurrDurr.Activities;assembly=HurrDurr}MyActivity.Variables'.'

So the designer says the type is unknown, and the error list says I have some issue with significant whitespace.  Except I don't, or cannot find it.

Custom config returns NULL section despite "proper" definition

I have defined a custom config section but when I try to get the section, it's always null.

I can't see what I'm missing. The only thing that I can might be an issue is that the code is part of a library project ina a solution with a main project, so not sure if the app.config has to be under the main project instead.

Below is my code, any ideas?

    public class CustomConfiguration : ConfigurationSection
        [ConfigurationProperty("keys", IsRequired = false)]
        public KeyCollection Keys
                return this["keys"] as KeyCollection;

    public class Key : ConfigurationElement
        [ConfigurationProperty("name", IsRequired = false)]
        public string Name
                return this["name"] as string;

        [ConfigurationProperty("value", IsRequired = false)]
        public string Value
                return this["value"] as string;

    public class KeyCollection : ConfigurationElementCollection
        public Key this[int index]
                return base.Base

Setting of sharepoint 2010 custom WCF service "web.config" file for both HTTP and HTTPS

        I have created a custom SharePoint 2010 WCF service that is deployed to 14\ISAPI\MYService folder. The issue i am facing is that this service should be accessible from all Web applications, that can be HTTPS (i.e. SSL) enabled or normal HTTP. If i am making in web.config file for web application that has HTTPS enabled, then it fails for Web applications having normal HTTP configuration. My requirement is that when this WCF service is deployed it should accessible from all web applications that can be HTTPS or HTTP both. I went through number of blogs and tried whatever option they had suggested but none of them worked for me :(. Here are some of the blog that i tried:-

Resetting properties in web deployment project based on custom build config file

I'm trying to create a general build environment for multiple projects that can take a some command line parameters and execute a build based on a custom config file.

The problem I am having is after I read in the config parameters with MSBuild.Community.Tasks XMLQuery, which works fine, I can't get aspnet_complier to see these parameters.

I keep getting "error MSB3462: Either MetabasePath or VirtualPath must be specified."

 Here is my project file:
