Customize TopNav in MasterPage

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 27, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I wanted to strip out the currently used ASPMenu that control the TopNav Global toolbar across the top.  I have an environment where there are 5 sitecollections and I need to have links to those sites present (along with drop downs) in this navigation.  Since 2010 does not see site collections in TopNav, I have to custom code this.

I have created a menu system that implements dropline style and uses a standart UL for the data stored in a txt file.

I am trying to insert an include statement in my MasterPage to read this file but am getting nothing back even though I am pretty sure my code is correct:

<!--#include virtual="http://ghsp201001:3636/sites/TFarrell/KFI/SitePages/Menu.txt-->

I have even tried to place this inside a CEWP in the Masterpage as well but still get nothing back.  When I click on View Source, there is no indication that the include file is even being returned at all.

Can someone comment on this for me and let me know what I am missing here.  Is there a parameter in web.config that is not allowing for use of include files?

Thank you for your comments,

Six easy ways to customize your site using Web Parts in SharePoint

Becoming familiar with Web Part customization techniques gives you a range of page-customization choices. For example, you can customize your site's home page so that it displays the specific information that your team needs. You can rearrange the list items on the home page, add lists, and even change the images on the home page. As you become more familiar with Web Part Page customization techniques, you can build interactive Web Part Pages that makes the data in lists more dynamic and useful, and you can add new Web Parts that provide access to external data and Web services.

Cutting Edge: Customize Your Open File Dialog

Displaying an Open File dialog is certainly easy in the Microsoft® . NET Framework with Windows® Forms, but the resulting window is not as customizable as when you create it through the Win32® API. With Windows 2000, Microsoft added a nice feature-the places bar, which is the vertical toolbar that appears on the left side of the window to let you select a frequently visited folder.

Windows 2000 Registry: Latest Features and APIs Provide the Power to Customize and Extend Your Apps

The Windows registry as it is recognized today first appeared in Windows 95. Its introduction simplified the storage of initialization information and made that data more secure. This article covers the history of the registry, the form it took in the early days, and its current incarnation in Windows 2000. Practical tips for managing data in the registry are outlined, along with descriptions of special keys, functions, and file types. Manipulation of the registry to customize both application behavior and certain features in Windows is discussed. Also covered are future directions of the registry, including the use of XML to store registry information in a hierarchical fashion.

Setting webpage/masterpage background...image?

I want to have the background of my masterpage (the master page for all of my .aspx pages) have a sort of gradient.  I imagine the only way I can do that is with an image.  Or maybe even some other design, but I want to move away from the "solid color" background.

Is the easiest way to do this just to make an image and set that as the background?  What image size should I make it, because some users could possibly have the normal aspect ratio, or maybe a widescreen?  What should I make it like so that it looks good on all computers?

Thanks in advance. :)

Customize failure text for login control

Hi all,

I would like to show the failure text in a client-side alert box for login control in c#. Please help me if there is an easy way to convert it from vb.net to c#.net. Thanks a lot!

Protected Sub Login1_LoginError(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Login1.LoginError
'Display the failure message in a client-side alert box
ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(Me.GetType(), "LoginError", _
String.Format("alert('{0}');", Login1.FailureText.Replace("'", "\'")), True)

 End Sub

 Converted, but it doesn't work.

    ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "LoginError", string.Format("alert('{0}');", Login1.FailureText.Replace("'", "\\'")), true);

How to Customize the Add Comment 'Items on this list require content approval...' notification in

WSS 3.0:

If content approval is turned on, the Add Comment section displays a fairly ugly notification. Is there any way I can customize that section through e.g. CSS or SPDesigner?

I'd like to change at least the text, and preferably the yellow exclamation image, and also the background if possible.

Customize Read Only/Edit Dialog box

Is there a way to customize the dialog box that comes up when you click on a file to open it?

The box goes as follows:

You are about to open:
How would you like to open this file?
Read Only

It always defaults to Read Only, but I'd like to default it to Edit.

Any ideas?  Thanks.
