Office 2003: Secure and Deploy Business Solutions with Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office

Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System is a new technology that brings the advanced features of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to applications built for Microsoft Office Word 2003 and Microsoft Office Excel 2003. Deploying solutions built with this technology requires that you understand how runtime security is enforced in managed applications and how to configure users' systems to run your solutions without introducing security holes. To promote that understanding, this article will demonstrate how to establish trust, explain policy considerations and permissions, and explain what trusted code is all about. Secure assembly deployment is also covered in detail.

Office 2003: Bring the Power of Visual Studio .NET to Business Solutions Built with Microsoft Office

Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System is a new technology that brings the advanced features of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to apps built on Microsoft Word 2003 and Excel 2003. Now you can use Visual Basic .NET and C# to write document-centric, managed code solutions that run in-process with Word 2003 or Excel 2003, taking advantage of the rich object models they expose. Along the way you get the benefits of the managed environment in which a fully compiled .NET-based application executes, including code access security.

Editor's Note: Get Ready For Microsoft Office 2003

Over the years, we've celebrated a lot of anniversaries in this column. Who can forget our "Ten Years of ENIAC!" Editor's Note back in June 1957? Or the "How Far We've Come: Five Years of the Altair 8800" issue back in January 1980? Or even the "Macintosh Interface: 15 Years Without an Update" Editor's Note page just four years ago?.

ItemAdded fails after Microsoft.Office.Word.Server.Conversions.ConversionJob was completed

Hey, I defined a ConversionJob from doc to pdf inside and the doc-file is located in a  document library and the job goes through without any problems. The pdf is created as expected. However if I try to catch an ItemAdded event the debugger starts every time the ConversionJob is finished and if I agree to debug the problem the debugger proceeds after the first time I hit F10 no matter how much code is located in the eventreceiver. The "error" seems to occur in the first line of my event receiver no matter what's in that line. If I got something like "string test = "text";" the debugger will come up anyway. I'm really confused by this behaviour and I hope somebody has worked with ConversionJobs from Word Automation Services before.

Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ProjectWebSite\Files\ROUTINE_MCA.

Hello everybody.

I am in a critical situation. I first tried to make a project (file->new->project) using visual studio, where I displayed the content of a excel file by GridView. I was successful then, but when I attach it to my website located in inetpub I am getting this error :

Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ProjectWebSite\Files\ROUTINE_MCA.xlsx'. There are several possible reasons:

. The file name or path does not exist.
. The file is being used by another program.
. The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.

At first I faced some COM related problem and found solution in Google, but this particular problem is not solving. Is there any way to access Excel document in asp.net website?

In my application there is a facility of uploading excel document to the server and then display its content. But I have failed to do this display operation, is there any turn around way, like store the excel document as dataset and then access it as required.

Please help. I am in great trouble. Thanks in advance.

Uploading Office 2003 files are set to Folder Content Type

Hi All,

Been pulling my hair out trying to figure this one and am hoping that you are able to help.

Have been putting together a new SP2010 Standard environment and have gone as far as creating some sites, sub sites and generating Content Types and assigning to Doc Libraries etc.

The problem comes when we are attempting to upload existing Office 2003 files, namely Word .doc files, and only happens on specific libraries, this is not across the board.

When we upload an existing 2003 file to the affected library, we are not able to set any meta data to the file as SharePoint registers the Content Type as a Folder as seen in the properties of the file:

Description: cid:image001.png@01CB5A4C.D9F0EA90

However, if we upload a pre-existing Office 2010 .docx, we get the full array of Meta Data and the correct Content Type has been assigned.

Do any wonderful people have any clues as to what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance

problem copying list item containing office 2007 files, fine with office 97-2003 format

I created 2 document libraries, with a few fields in it, one of it is the people and group field named "Approver".  The thing is, when the document is of 97 - 2003 format, the approver field gets copied over fine, but when is of 2007 format, it does not get copied, its only the people and group column, I tried different names like Hidden_Approver, but yet it does not get copied. Am I doing something wrong here, and have anyone else faced the same error
