STSADM -o Backup for SharePoint 2003 SiteCollection throws "The specified URL is not a top-level Web

I'm attempting to backup and restore a site collection in a 2003 implementation as part of a process to migrate ~1500 subsites to a MOSS 2007 implementation. My first step was to backup the site collection these subsites were residing in http://CompPortal/sites/MySiteCollection/ When I run the below command in STSADM I get the error "The specified URL is not a top-level Web site. The backup and restore operations work only for top-level Web sites. Enter the URL for a site to try the operation again. stsadm.exe -o backup -url http://CompPortal/sites/MySiteCollection/ -filename "C:\backup\BL" -overwrite I checked in Central Admin to confirm that this is a site collection and I assume a top-level site and site collection are synonymous. Does anybody have a suggestion on what I could be missing? Thanks

Attaching the Config Database in SharePoint 2007 with STSADM

Hello, We've moved our MOSS 2007 dev environment SQL database to a new server and we're having trouble attaching the config database to SharePoint using stsadm so we can access central admin. Here is the command we're running: stsadm -o setconfigdb -connect -databaseserver kraspsqltest\mosstest -databasename wss_config -farmuser "farmaccountname" -farmpassword "farmpassword" When I run this command (obviously with the correct username and password), the only message I see is: Access denied. I've checked with our DBA and nothing on his end is blocking the command. I do see the following in the event log where the command is being run: "Unknown SQL Exception 10061 occured. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)" I've also noticed the folder containing the web.config file in IIS is no longer present on the MOSS server. Is this deleted when the config database is detached and added back when reattached? This server was working just fine prior to the database move

SharePoint Farm Backup Error in Search instance function

I'm working with MS Project Server 2007 with SharePoint WSS. When doing a full farm backup in SharePoint Central Admin > Operations > Backup and Restore > Perform a Backup, I encountered 2 errors in "SharePoint Windows Services Search, Search instance". 1) Error: Object a8b2cbfe-ef8b-45ce-92a0-c5675f534ec0 failed in event OnBackup. Backup through Central Admin fails; works using stsadm

Hi, I'm trying to schedule automatic backups of my SharePoint 2007 site.  I wrote a .vbs script that does the backup with the following line:   objShell.Run "cmd /c stsadm.exe -o backup -directory """ & BACKUP_DIR & SITE_DIR & """ -backupmethod full -item ""Farm\Windows SharePoint Services Web Application\SharePoint - SharePointSites"" > """ & CURR_DIR & "log.txt""", 0, True   I ran the vbs script from the command line and everything worked fine.  I used the Windows Task schedule to run the script as a scheduled task.  The script ran fine and the backup completed successfully (according to the logs), but now if I go to the Central Admin page and try to do a restore, I get the error:   The backup/restore job failed. In order to rerun the backup/restore the timer job must be deleted from the Timer Job Definitions page. Failure Message: Backup or restore is already running.   The odd thing is I can do another backup or restore using stsadm at the command line and it works fine.  I can also run the scheduled task to do another backup and that works fine too.  I just can't do any backups or restores from Cetnral Admin anymore.   Any suugestions or ideas? Thanks. -Cynthia

Move MySite with stsadm backup from FARM A to FARM B within same Domain

Hi, I'd to move, with a series of "stsadm -o backup -url..." command, a lot of mySites from one Farm to another in the same Active Directory. Are there special Tasks after the "stsadm -o restore -newurl ..." command ? Can I handle MySite like a "normal" Team Sites ? I'm not sure what happen, for the Users after the new MySite URL become active (I hope it will not create a new empty one) ThanksTester

Full Farm Backup Fails on Windows Sharepoint Services Search Database

I am just now starting to us central administration to backup the entire sharepoint farm.  All content backups fine except for the Search Database.  In looking through the backup log, it appears that the search database may not exist.  How can I determine if the search database actually does exist and if it does not can it be recreated?

Cannot Restore Backup from Sharepoint Server 2007 to Sharepoint Server 2010 Trial Version

After installing the trial version of Sharepointn 2010 I wanted to restore my Sharepoint 2007 sites to it but received the following error:  "The site collection could not be restored. If this problem persists, please make sure the content databases are available and have sufficient free space." I went on to create a new content database in sharepoint 2010 but it still did not work. The old database i.e the one used by the sharepoint 2007 server is SQL 2005. During the installation of the sharepoint 2010 version I selected SQl Server Express for the database. Is there any specifics for migrating from MOSS 2007 to sharepoint 2010? Thanks for helping

Cannot import backup from Sharepoint 3.0 to replacement server

I want to retire a Windows 2003 Standard server (named Meton) running Sharepoint 3.0 and transfer its entire database in a transparent manner (I want it to be exactly like it is on the old server) to a 2008 R2 standard guest partitian. I have sucessfully backup up the old server using both the operations tab of the web GUI and this bat file: cd\ cd Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN stsadm -o backup -url http://meton.pond_rd.wtpsmercer.k12.nj.us -directory D:\Wholesite -backupmethod full -percentage 10 -backupthreads 3 pause Both worked. Giving credit where due both this and the import bat were derived from information on http://www.epnetworking.com/blog/?p=179. Attempting to import with the GUI produced nothing. Then I ran this bat: c: cd\ cd Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN stsadm -o restore -hostheaderwebapplicationurl http://sharepoint.pond_rd.wtpsmercer.k12.nj.us -directory C:\ -restoremethod new -username xxxxxx -password xxxxxx -newdatabaseserver sql2008 pause   Despite the information on technet that stsadm is not interactive there are a series of questions and it would not let me choice the default database name, see below. Sharepoint - Webpart doesnt deploy - stsadm reports deployment 'successful'

MOSS 2007 :)

I am having problems deploying a webpart..
This webpart was successfully installed and deployed on a similar environment with no problems. However when trying to deploy it in its intended site it's having some strange problems..

1. I installed the webpart to the server (through stsadm) - return message "Operation completed successfully."
2. I deployed the webpart to the intended site - return message "Operation completed successfully."
3. I performed an IIS reset and navigated to the 'site features' area to find no trace of the webpart to activate.

I ran the 'stsadm -o enumsolutions' command to view the solutions that are deployed, and I see my webpart here:

version dependency while backup restore of SharePoint 2007 Site Collections

hi all

I am aware of a version dependency on the stsadm -o backup/restore operation.

But will the same dependency exist for a content DB backup restore..

i.e. for example will we able to restore a content DB backup taken from a server with version say to a server with say assuming that the versions of SQL is the same in both cases.

Will the version difference in SQL create issues

Thanks in advance

Sharepoint backup problems

Hello, As a sharepoint newbie with practically 0% experience, I have inherited a sharepoint 2007 setup.  Our 3rd party backup tool is not working (commvault) with this sharepoint server.

To troubleshoot, I went into MOSS 2007's central administration and tried to initiate a backup to a local folder on the sharepoint server. The estimated size of the backups when i was starting the backup was approx 4.5 gb. The first time I tried this, the backups never finished after 12+ hrs and only ~300kb was in the folder.  I have tried backing up to the local folder e:\backupfolder and have now tried \\servername\e$\backupfolder and it fails also.

I tried to initiate another backup and it said to delete the job from timer definitions.  I did so and tried again, now the backups fail almost instantly with the error, "The backup/restore job failed. In order to rerun the backup/restore the timer job must be deleted from the Timer Job Definitions page. Failure Message: Backup or restore is already running."

I'm confused as to whter backups are running, are not running or hung.  I do see some logging but do not understand the logs.  Below I will paste relevant time of logs when I tried to initiate latest ba

Your backup is from a different version of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation -- Sharepoint 2010

I made a backup of SharePoint farm from 2010 and tried to restore on a dev server and kept getting this error.  I looked at the versions of SharePoint on both servers, and they were identical:  14.0.4763.1000

I'm posting this although it is not a question, but a statement that might help someone else.  It took a while to notice that there had been an upgrade on the original server that the new dev box did not yet have... not an SP, but more like a hotfix type upgrade.

In Central Admin, go to "Upgrade and Migration".  Click on "Check product and patch installation status".  Scroll down the page of results and see if there are any links to updates that have been installed on the original server that are not on the new server, or vice-versa.  I did find a link on my original server.  Clicking on it opened the update page, so I copied the URL, went to my dev server, opened that page and installed the update, and voila!
