Writing to a csv file

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 26, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WPF

Once again I have trawled the web for a WPF (VB) example of writing to a CSV file. I have found several in C# and Forms VB and managed to work out reading from CSV. However, the writing version I have come up with adds a blank line after each actual line. Also the first cell written to the CSV file contains some wierd characters just before the genuine content. (i.e. #?!Name1 instead of just Name1); I have shown the code below.

  Sub writeCSVData()
    If File.Exists("resources\csvData.csv") Then
      MsgBox("resources\csvData.csv doesn't exist")
    End If
    MyFileName = "resources\csvData.csv"

    myCSVWriter = My.Computer.FileSystem.OpenTextFileWriter(MyFileName, True)

    For y = 0 To 14
      myNewLine = ""

file upload in chunks or not buffering in memory before writing to disk?

What are the options for handling file uploads to reduce the memory footprint?  Is there a way to upload in chunks?  Is there a way to stream upload directly to disk instead of loading entire file in server memory?

Writing to a text file

I have the following  subroutine in an asp.net application class. The subroutine writes data to a text file upon application login.   My question is that if this function was called at the same time by two different  users would it cause any kind of error. Is there a need for a try catch?

 Public Shared Sub writeToLogFile(ByVal UserName  As String)
        Dim strLogMessage As String = String.Empty
        Dim strLogFile As String = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/Log.txt") Dim swLog As StreamWriter
        strLogMessage = DateTime.Now.ToShortDateString().ToString()  " ==> " & UserName

        If Not File.Exists(strLogFile) Then
            swLog = New StreamWriter(strLogFile)
            swLog = File.AppendText(strLogFile)
        End If

Writing to excel file - The field is too small to accept the amount of

I am writing to excel file using jet driver. If the length of value exceeds 255 characters i get the below error.

'The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add.  Try inserting or pasting less data'

Please could you provide a solution to how can i add values with length greater than 255. Excel file is 97-2003 format.

System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand command = new System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand();
 System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection connection =
          new System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(
              "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + destinationFilePath + ";Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;");
command.CommandText = "Insert into [sheet1$] (col1, col2) values ('1', 'TEXT Message greater than 255 characters')

Writing File in Oracle to Secured Directory on NAS Server

I have a stored procedure that creates a comma delimited file. I can easily write to a directory on the database server, but I would like to write the file to a mapped network directory on a NAS server. The issue, at least conceptually (sorry for being a novice here), is that I have no way of accessing or embedding the necessary username/password to write to the specified directory.

Based on initial research, it looks like the oracle account is the one writing the file. Would that mean that the oracle account would have to have the appropriate privileges to the NAS directory? Who would that oracle user be? The niku account user being used to execute the proc?

Kind of lost here. Would like to send directly to the NAS to avoid an SFTP to another environment.

Writing to log file on first pageload (!ispostback). thread safe

Based on this piece of code, I want to do exactly like this demonstration.  However, correct me if I'm wrong but if two or more users somehow simultaneously access the web page at the same precise nanosecond in time, then wouldn't we have a race condition?  So is this piece of code valid?  How would I correct this to make it thread safe???

Once you have published a site in ASP.NET, you'd like to know who are your visitors. One way is to check your event log on the host server. Another option is to write your own code. You'd basically like to log the IP address, and DNS name for the visitor, and it would be nice to know which page they are visiting.

To log the ip address using ASP.NET, you can call:

Parameter error writing to excell 2007 file using SQL 2008 Server Agent JOB, works in BIDS.

I am getting the following error message when I try to run a script that writes to an excel file calling my Package with a SQL 2008 JOB.

Executed as user: xxxx\xxxxxxx. Microsoft (R) SQL Server Execute Package Utility  Version 10.0.1600.22 for 32-bit  Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights reserved.    Option "12.0;HDR=YES;" is not valid.  The command line parameters are invalid.  The step failed.

This same package runs correctly if I execute it in dev mode in BIDS.  I had to set 64bitmode to false in Dev mode to get it to work.  I set executable options in the job step to 'run in 32 bit mode'  The error message indicates to me it is trying to run in 32 bit mode which should be correct but it doesn't like the extended parameters. .

Here is my connection string from the data sources tab on the job

Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=c:\xxxx.xlsx;Extended Properties="EXCEL 12.0;HDR=YES";

This was filled in ny the connection object for me.  I have read the article closely at http://toddmcdermid.blogspot.com/2009/10/quick-reference-ssis-in-32-and-64-bits.html and still can't figure out what I need to change.

File Splitter in .Net

I love to do utility programs in .Net. And this is one of them. As I was playing with JSplit (a free file splitter program), I wondered if I could do it in .Net. The framework supports file operations like reading files in bytes and creating them. It is indeed easy to do file operations in .Net Basics on File operations

Upload Multiple File using JQuery in asp.net

In this article I have explained how to upload multiple files using file upload control. I have used jQuery plugin for uploading multiple files.

I have also explained how to check for file type, file maximum size limit using jQuery & also using server side validation code.

Writing custom MembershipProvider

ASP.NET Membership mechanism allows to use the build-in server tables to store and retrieve user data. By default, this mechanism can only be used with SQL Server database to which Microsoft provides suitable MembershipProvider class.
Inheriting from this abstract class, developer can use his own table(-es) from any database and use any database engine other than SQL Server, like Oracle, DB2 etc.

10 Tips for Writing High-Performance Web Applications

Writing a Web application with ASP.NET is unbelievably easy. So easy, many developers don't take the time to structure their applications for great performance. In this article, I'm going to present 10 tips for writing high-performance Web apps. I'm not limiting my comments to ASP.NET applications because they are just one subset of Web applications. This article won't be the definitive guide for performance-tuning Web applications-an entire book could easily be devoted to that. Instead, think of this as a good place to start.
