Identity Insert Error & Conflict with Foreign Key

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 25, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

So I'm trying learn SQL using the CBT Nuggets and am at a point where they must have made a mistake because I've gone through and followed everything to a fine detail and they must have left something out.

So I am trying to insert a row into a table and get following IDENTITY_INSERT error:

So I do some research and find out how to turn on the INDENTITY_INSERT as well as identify the column list. After doing so I get a foreign key error as before attempting to enter the row I created a relationship between the 'country' column and the 'country_code' column from the countries.dbo table. (see below for code).

Foreign Key Error

The error it fully states is:

(0 row(s) affected)
Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 3
The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constrai

Insert Error not helpful

I am using VS2010

When I try to updated or insert a record in my User table I am getting an error that does not make sense to me and I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Also, when I try to insert a new record I get a validation error saying that the Id is required. However it is an identity field in the db so it should not be necessary to send it to the server.

Could you please shed some light?

SQL ServerDestination error - Unable to prepare the SSIS bulk insert for data insertion.

Having searched the forum, this one clearly has form... However beyond assisting those who have fallen at the first hurdle (i.e. forgetting/not knowing that they cannot execute the package remotely to the instance of SQL Server into which they are inserting), the issues raised by others have not been addressed. Thus I am bringing nothing new to the table here - just providing an executive summary of problems which others have run into, written about, but not received answers for.   First the complete error: Description: Unable to prepare the SSIS bulk insert for data insertion.  End Error  Error: 2008-01-15 04:55:27.58     Code: 0xC004701A     Source: <xxx> DTS.Pipeline     Description: component "<xxx> failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC0202071.  End Error  DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_FAILURE (1).  Started:  4:53:34 AM  Finished: 5:00:00 AM  Elapsed:  385.384 seconds.  The package execution failed.  The step failed.   Important points It mostly works - It produces no error more than 9 times out of 10. It fails on random dataflows - My package has several dataflows, (mostly) executing concurrently. Where the error occurs it does not do so on the same dataflow each time: on one run it'll fail on dataflow A whilst B,C,D and E succeed, then A-E will all succeed (and continue doing so for the next ten runs thereafter), and

Get error message from bulk insert task.

Hello, I've created a dtsx package that bulk inserts some data from a csv file into a sql table (using the BULK INSERT TASK). Because this package is scheduled to run automatically, I also added a EXECUTE SQL TASK that will insert a row in a 'log table'. It is linked to the BULK INSERT task with a 'Succes constraint (green arrow)', so I know about all the successes. But I am more interested in the failures, so I also added another EXECUTE SQL TASK and linked it to the BULK INSERT task with the 'failure constraint (red arrow)'. Question: How can I get the error message from the BULK INSERT TASK (like 'file does not exist' or 'error converting .....') and store it in a field in the 'log table'? Thanks in advance, Peter

Foreign characters causing a duplicate attribute key error - how to avoid?

Greetings, We have a data warehouse into which we import data obtained from our outside vendors.  The data are then used to build data cubes.  Lately we have started to get a duplicate key error on the "County" attribute in our "Location" dimension.  The problem appears to be caused by these two values returned by the query that returns the distinct list of counties: Spree-Neisse Spree-Neiße These are German counties and they are really the same county, I believe.  Our data warehouse stores County as a varchar.  If I cast the stored value as nvarchar, the query that returns the distinct list of counties returns only the 2nd value and so should avoid the duplicate key error.  (I haven't tried it yet, just speculating.) This post suggests the root cause of the problem: http://ssas-musings.blogspot.com/2009/11/duplicate-key-error.html We don't have any control over the data before our vendors give it to us, and it comes from all over the world.  What is the best way to avoid occurrences of the duplicate attribute key error?  Should we be storing all our character data as nvarchar?  Would it be enough to cast the stored data as nvarchar when the cubes are being built?  Is there a better approach?  I'd like to get an idea of what the best practice would be.  Our warehouse

Replication Error - Can't Insert Null into MSSubscription_agents.allow_subscription_copy

In attempting to set up a transactional replication subscription via the UI, I keep getting the error that I cannot insert a Null into the MSSubscription_agents table.  Originally, this was on the allow_subscription_copy column.  One resource suggested altering the column to allow Nulls but that only moved the issue to the attach_state and, later, attach_version columns.  My immediate issue was resolved with these changes BUT I'm really concerned that I need to alter a system table in order to allow a fairly simple replication subscription to be configured.  Has anyone run into this issue and is there a better work around available? I'm running SQL 2008 Enterprise Edition SP1 in a 64-bit environment on both the Publisher/Distributor and Subscriber servers.

SQL Server 2K5 - INSERT INTO Script crash with no specific error

Hi, I need to run a sql statement that insert data into a table. I have about 14000 line to insert. In SQL Management studio, I did a script like that : INSERT INTO [TableName] (Field1,fireld2,field3,...) Select 'Values1','Values2','Value3',.... UNION ALL Select 'Values1','Values2','Value3',.... UNION ALL Select 'Values1','Values2','Value3',.... UNION ALL . . . When I try to insert around 1000 line and more, the script crash with no specific error code or message. I only see the message in the status bar saying, the script ended with error. Is there a way to avoid having that error ? ThanksRichard Martin Web Developer / BI Developer

Error on INSERT INTO (using Parameter) within Execute SQL task

I'm sure there is a simple solution to this, however to save my banging my head against a brick wall: -

Within the "Execute SQL Task Editor" I have the following; -

Parameter Mapping Tab; -

Variable Name; - System::PackageName,
Directtion; - Input,
Data Type; - NVARCHAR,
Parameter Name; - 0,
Parameter Size; - 100

General Tab; -

SQLStatement; - INSERT INTO dbo.CustomSSISLog  (System::PackageName)     VALUES (?)

When I click on the "Parse Query" button I get the following error; - "

The query failed to parse. Parameter Information cannot be derived from SQL statements. Set parameter information before preparing command.

The table exists as follows; -

USE [ErrorLog]
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CustomSSISLog](
	[CustomSSISLogKey] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
	[PackageName] [nvarchar](100) NULL

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
