Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I'm trying to get the new PK identity of a record I just inserted.  Code is as follows:

myAddress.Address1 = streetName;

myAddress.ZipCode = zipCode;

myAddress.CityId = cityId;

myAddress.PhoneNumber = phoneNumber;

int aid = myAddress.AddressId ;

How come my AddressId returns 0?

Identity Insert Error & Conflict with Foreign Key

So I'm trying learn SQL using the CBT Nuggets and am at a point where they must have made a mistake because I've gone through and followed everything to a fine detail and they must have left something out.

So I am trying to insert a row into a table and get following IDENTITY_INSERT error:

So I do some research and find out how to turn on the INDENTITY_INSERT as well as identify the column list. After doing so I get a foreign key error as before attempting to enter the row I created a relationship between the 'country' column and the 'country_code' column from the countries.dbo table. (see below for code).

Foreign Key Error

The error it fully states is:

(0 row(s) affected)
Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 3

How to return identity after Insert?

Hello every one!!!

i am a beginner in programming. i am using c# to access an database that has a categories table. I successfully wrote a method that inserts a new row with a given id. but i want to do it without given the id so i tried this code but it doesn't work:

  public int AddCategorie(Categorie c)

   SqlCeConnection conn = new SqlCeConnection(connectionString);

   string cmdText = @"INSERT INTO Categories ([Categorie_Name]) VALUES (@name);

       SET @id = SCOPE_IDENTITY()";

   SqlCeCommand command = new SqlCeCommand(cmdText, conn);

   command.Parameters.Add(new SqlCeParameter("@id", SqlDbType.Int));

   command.Parameters.Add(new SqlCeParameter("@name", c.Name));

    return (int)command.Parameters["@id"

SQL Identity column / concurrent insert performance

How does sql handle concurrent insertion of rows into a table that has a integer identity column for a primary key?  Does it deadlock?  Does it just lock / block while inserts are performed one at a time?  My client app may be running twenty concurrent thread resulting in 20 concurrent inserts.  Is this a bad design from a performance perspective?  Is it better to use a different unique ID such as a GUID?

Insert value using Table Value Functions

a real gem in Sql Server 2008. mostly people still using Stored procedure may be they shifted to SQL Server but they are not using TVF right now.

Insert Rows with a GridView

In ASP.NET version 1.x, I used the footer on the DataGrid control to insert new rows by placing a series of TextBox, DropDownLists, CheckBoxes etc. controls on it and then handling a save button. This also works with the GridView in version 2.0 but with one major exception: if your data source is empty, the GridView will hide your footer (and header) and only display the EmptyDataText.

SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() returns -1 when doing Insert / Update / Delete

Sometimes you end up with a return value of -1 when using the SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method.

Why is that?

Well, the ExecuteNonQuery method is there for statements for changing data, ie. DELETE / UPDATE /INSERT, and the returned value are the number of rows affected by that statement.

When checking the documentation we can see that there are some conditions that return -1.

For UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements, the return value is the number of rows affected by the command.

When a trigger exists on a table being inserted or updated, the return value includes the number of rows affected by both the insert or update operation and the number of

rows affected by the trigger or triggers. For all other types of statements, the return value is -1. If a rollback occurs, the return value is also -1.

Insert Error not helpful

I am using VS2010

When I try to updated or insert a record in my User table I am getting an error that does not make sense to me and I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Also, when I try to insert a new record I get a validation error saying that the Id is required. However it is an identity field in the db so it should not be necessary to send it to the server.

Could you please shed some light?

Detecting Edit or Insert Page

I am coding a .cs file that handles the metadata for a particular table. I am putting a custom validation that allows me to update or insert only if the PubMedID is not already in the database. This would be easy except that the PMID should also be allowed to be null as some of the references in the database were not from PubMed. So i perform a query on the database to see if there is already an identical PMID in the database. This works great when using Insert. However, when using Edit, it does not. The PMID is already in the database because the one currently being edited has the same PMID!!! So I know exactly how to change my query etc. However, I do not know how to tell from inside this Edit/Insert agnostic page, which one it is being called from. Thanks for your help!

Pass ASP.NET membership identity object across domain?

I am trying to figure a way to SSO with ASP.NET membership and role model.

I can implement custom membership provider which consume web services hosting on a server.

With encryption of data. No problem.

But my question is, If I sign on a website with my provider, got my identity object on that application,

could I pass it to another website on another domain which use the same provider and by doing so, do not need to login again?

If this is possible, I am going to implement this solution. Please tell me what's your take on this.

Federated Identity: Passive Authentication for ASP.NET with WIF

The goal of federated security is to provide a mechanism for establishing trust relationships between domains. Platform tools like Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) make it much easier to support this type of identity federation. We show you how.

AD FS 2.0 in Identity Solutions: Using Active Directory Federation Services 2.0 in Identity Solution

This article explains how you can use Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0 to claims-enable Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services and browser-based applications. The focus is on the token issuance functionality in AD FS 2.0. You'll find out how to use AD FS 2.0 as an identity provider; set up an AD FS 2.0 security token service (STS) to interact with WCF; federate AD FS 2.0 with your custom STS or another AD FS 2.0; enable Web single sign-on and federation with WS-Federation and SAML 2.0 protocols; and externalize authentication logic through Visual Studio. You'll come away appreciating how AD FS 2.0 and Windows Identity Foundation make programming identity solutions in Windows less of a chore.
